    CHAPTER - IV PROFILE OF THE STUDY AREA THANJAVUR DISTRICT PROFILE The study area chosen for the research is Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu. Thanjavur district is bounded on the north east by Nagapattinam district, north be Tiruchirappalli, Perabalur and Cuddalore districts, east by Thiruvarur district, south-east by Palk strait, west by Pudukkottai and north-west by Tiruchirappalli district. Geocode North Latitude 10o 08’ to 11o 12’ East longitude 78o 48’ to 79o 38’ Agro Ecological Region : Region 8 : Semi-arid ecosystem (90%) – Eastern ghats, Tamil Nadu uplands – hot semiarid ecosystem with a crop growing period of 90 to 120 days. Region 18 : Coastal ecosystem (10%) – Eastern coastal plain hot sub – humid to semi-arid ecoregion and with a crop growing period of 90 to 210 days. Water is essential for life to flourish in this world. Therefore, the Great Poet Tiruvalluvar says, “ڮϋW mikahJ cybfå‹ ah®ah®¡F« th‹Ï‹W mikahJ xG¡F” (FwŸ 20) (The world cannot exist without water and order in the world can exists only with rain) Tamil Nadu is mainly dependent upon Agriculture for it’s economic growth. Hence, timely and adequate supply of “water” is an important factor. Keeping the above in mind, I the Hon’ble Chief Minister with her vision and intention, to make Tamil Nadu a “numero uno” State in the country with “Peace, Prosperity and Progress” as the guiding principle, has been guiding the Department in the formulation and implementation of various schemes for the development and maintenance of water resources. On the advice, suggestions and with the able guidance of Hon’ble Chief Minister, the Water Resources Department is maintaining the Water Resources Structures such as, Anicuts, Tanks etc., besides rehabilitating and forming the irrigation infrastructure, which are vital for the food production and prosperity of the State.

    A REPORT ON NGC ACTIVITIES IN TAMILNADU DURING 2004-2005 National Green Corps (Eco-clubs): An Overview We all know that we are part of the environment we live in. The solution to many environmental problems lie in our attitude towards environment. Be it awareness to keep our surroundings clean or the realization to conserve natural resources by re-using and recycling wherever possible, they all are attitudinal. On the surface, it looks simple; but changing the attitude of one billion people is not going to happen overnight. The best way to attempt to bring about a change in the attitudes in the society is through children. They have no vested interests; they are impressionable; they are our future. They are the single most important influence in any family. With this realization the Ministry of Environment & Forests, Government of India decided to launch the National Green Corps Progarnme (NGC). Government of India started the NGC Programme in the Tenth Five Year Plan. The objectives of this National programme are to educate children about their immediate environment to impart knowledge about the intricacies of the eco- systems, through field visits to instill in them the spirit of scientific inquiry into environmental problem and involve them in the efforts of environmental conservation. The NGC programme was successfully launched in 29 districts of Tamilnadu during 2002-2003. But the Department of Environment was one of the pioneers in starting eco-clubs in 1260 schools spread over all the districts of Tamilnadu within the State Government fund even before NGC programme came into being.

The Cholas, known worldwide for their bronze sculptures, world heritage temples and land reforms, were also able builders. They followed a traditional systematic approach called Vaastu Sastra in building their cities, towns, and villages. In an attempt to discover and reconstruct Gangaikonda Cholapuram, an administrative capital (metropolis) of the Chola Dynasty, evidence is collected from the fragments of living inscriptions, epigraphs, archaeological excavation, secondary sources, and other sources pertinent to Vaastu Sastra. The research combines archival research methodology, archaeological documentation and informal architectural survey. The consolidation, analysis, and manipulation of data helps to uncover the urban infrastructure of Gangaikonda Cholapuram city.
