Water is essential for life to flourish in this world. Therefore, the Great Poet Tiruvalluvar says, “ڮϋW mikahJ cybfå‹ ah®ah®¡F« th‹Ï‹W mikahJ xG¡F” (FwŸ 20) (The world cannot exist without water and order in the world can exists only with rain) Tamil Nadu is mainly dependent upon Agriculture for it’s economic growth. Hence, timely and adequate supply of “water” is an important factor. Keeping the above in mind, I the Hon’ble Chief Minister with her vision and intention, to make Tamil Nadu a “numero uno” State in the country with “Peace, Prosperity and Progress” as the guiding principle, has been guiding the Department in the formulation and implementation of various schemes for the development and maintenance of water resources. On the advice, suggestions and with the able guidance of Hon’ble Chief Minister, the Water Resources Department is maintaining the Water Resources Structures such as, Anicuts, Tanks etc., besides rehabilitating and forming the irrigation infrastructure, which are vital for the food production and prosperity of the State.

    I Pedagogical Training Programme - 2016 Workshop for Primary School Mathematics & Science Teachers 19th January, 2016 an initiative towards preparing the teachers for Mathematics, Science and Technology Rashtriya Avishkar Abhiyan Central University of Tamil Nadu Central university of Tamil Nadu (CUTN) organized two Pedagogical Training Programmes(PTP) for about 100 primary school teachers under the initiative of Rashtriya Avishkar Abhiyan (RAA). One of the main interventions under RAA is Systemic improvement in the school system. As a first step, CUTN took this initiative towards preparing the teachers for Science, Mathematics and Technology. Aim of PTP-2016: Teacher preparation for teaching Science and Mathematics Objectives of PTP-2016: • Demonstrating Pedagogical strategies and guidelines for teachers • To demonstrate the use of technology in Science and Mathematics teaching • Showcasing the state-of-the-art Science laboratories • Sharing of best practices in assessment About PTP-2016 With the above aim and objectives, CUTN conducted two workshops one for Science teachers and one another for Mathematics teachers of primary schools around CUTN. As we all know there are 10 blocks around CUTN namely, Thiruvarur, Thiruthuraipoondi, Muthupettai, Kottur, Mannar- gudi, Needamangalam, Koradacheri, Valangaiman, Kudavasal, Nannilam, covering a geography of about 60 kms around CUTN. Under this initiate this year, we invited five Primary school Science teach- ers and five primary school Mathematics teachers from every block. Totally about 103 teachers attended this pedagogical training programme.     THIRUVARUR DISTRICT EXECUTIVE SUMMARY DISTRICT HUMAN DEVELOPMENT REPORT THIRUVARUR DISTRICT Introduction The old integrated Thanjavur district was trifurcated into three districts, namely, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts. GEOGRAPHY The district is situated between 10.200 and 11.070 of the Northern latitude. The district is bounded on the East and North by Nagapattinam district on the South by Palk Strait and on the west by Thanjavur district. Though Thanjavur, Thiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts are collectively called the Delta districts, Thiruvarur district is in the heart of the delta districts. The Cauvery is the chief river of the district, fostering agriculture and Tamil culture for ages together. It is a very small district with a total geographical area of 2097.09 Sq. Km. This constitutes just 1.6% of the area of the State. At present, this district comprises of seven revenue taluks viz., Thiruvarur, Kudavasal, Mannargudi, Needamangalam, 1 Thiruthuraipoondi, Nannilam and Valangaiman taluks and ten blocks of Thiruvarur, Nannilam, Koradachery, Kudavasal, Valangaiman, Needamangalam, Mannargudi, Kottur, Thiruthuraipoondi and Muthupettai. Out of the total geographical area of 2097.09 sq km, the net area under crop is 1,50,900 hectares. TOPOGRAPHY Thiruvarur can be divided into three regions from the topography and flora point of view. They are the alluvial regions land areas. The areas on the banks of rivers and canal in the form of narrow strips. The lateritic region: This region contains mostly thorny scrub jungles, tropical thorn forests and tropical dry evergreen forests. The coastal regions: This zone contains causurina plantations, mangrove scrub, mangrove forest and southern thorn scrub jungle.
