Bhuiya (42] Kalabaz (63) Turaiha (2) In Bunrlelkhand Division and the portion of Mirzapur District, south of Kai'l16ur Range- Gond FOREWORD THE Uttar Pradesh Government asked me in March, 1952, [0 supply them for the purposes of elections to local bodies population statistics with separation for scheduled castes (i) mohalla/ward -wise for urban areas, and (ii) vil1age~wise for rural areas. The Census Tabulation Plan did not provide for sorting of scheduled castes population for areas smaller than a tchsil or urban tract and the request from the Uttar Pradesh Covernment came when the slip sorting had been finished and (he Tabulation Offices closed. As the census slips are mixed up for the purpose~ of sorting in one lot for a tehsil or urban tract, collection of data regarding scheduled castes population by mohallasJwards and villages would have involved enormous labour and expense if sorting of the slips had been caken up afresh. Fortunately, however, a secondary census record, viz~ the National Citizens' Register, in which each slip has been copied, was available. By singular foresight it had been pre pared mohalia/ward-wise for urban areas and village-wise for rural areas. The required information has, therefore, been extracted from this record~ 2. In the above circumstances there is a slight difference in the figures of population as arrived at by an earlier sorting of the slips and as now determined by counting from the National Citizens' Register. This difference has been accell tuated by an order passed by me during the later count from the National Register of Citizens as follows:- (i) Count Ahirwars of Farrukhabad District, Raidas and Bhagat as 'C})amar/. (ii) Count Bhangi, Khakrob, Sweepers, Harijan, Mehtar. Jamadar and Achhut as 'Balmikjs'. The fact, that some members of the scheduled castes had returned then caste by names which did not find place in the schedule as notified under section 341 of the Constitut.ion of India, came ro my notice during the course of the earlier sorting, but at too late a stage to enable me to pass definite and uniform orders. I have tried to rectify it by passing this order for the purpose of counting from the National Citizensl R.egister. The differences in the figures of the two counts have been clearly set our in me tables that follow. ). The figures of total population of mohallas/wards have been arrived at by actual counting from the National Citizens) Register, while the figures Qftotal pop~lation of villages are those determined by actual sorting of the slips and recorded in the Primary Census Abstract. 4. In the Summary of Urban Population the code number of each town has been given. The first element of the code gives the code number of the district. the second the code number of the tehsil (or towns of ove'r-i'me lakh population) and .the third the code number of the town (other than a town" of one lakb population).     Gandhi As Mahatma: Gorakhpur District, Eastern UP, 1921-2'

    Gandhi as Mahatma 289 of time to lead or influence a political movement of the peasantry. Gandhi, the person, was in this particular locality for less than a day, but the 'Mahatma' as an 'idea' was thought out and reworked in Gandhi as Mahatma: popular imagination in subsequent months. Even in the eyes of some local Congressmen this 'deification'—'unofficial canonization' as the Gorakhpur District, Eastern UP, Pioneer put it—assumed dangerously distended proportions by April-May 1921. 1921-2' In following the career of the Mahatma in one limited area Over a short period, this essay seeks to place the relationship between Gandhi and the peasants in a perspective somewhat different from SHAHID AMIN the view usually taken of this grand subject. We are not concerned with analysing the attributes of his charisma but with how this 'Many miracles, were previous to this affair [the riot at Chauri registered in peasant consciousness. We are also constrained by our Chaura], sedulously circulated by the designing crowd, and firmly believed by the ignorant crowd, of the Non-co-operation world of primary documentation from looking at the image of Gandhi in this district'. Gorakhpur historically—at the ideas and beliefs about the Mahatma —M. B. Dixit, Committing Magistrate, that percolated into the region before his visit and the transformations, Chauri Chaura Trials. if any, that image underwent as a result of his visit. Most of the rumours about the Mahatma.'spratap (power/glory) were reported in the local press between February and May 1921. And as our sample I of fifty fairly elaborate 'stories' spans this rather brief period, we cannot fully indicate what happens to the 'deified' image after the Gandhi visited the district of Gorakhpur in eastern UP on 8 February rioting at Chauri Chaura in early 1922 and the subsequent withdrawal 1921, addressed a monster meeting variously estimated at between 1 of the Non-Co-operation movement.

E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT This study investigate the origin of Tharus, its affinities, internal organization, social nature in the form of lifestyle , religion, food-drinks ,occupations and social reforms by means of festivals, marriages and dance of Tharus. It is all possible by their life activity, survey of Tharu villages and vitality of the forest which is of ethnobotanical use. Forest provides economic uplift to the Tharus through vegetables, fruits, medicines through their plant resources. The main motive of the forest shall be to envisage long term harmonious relationship between the forest and Tharu’s social and economic interest. This paper inculcates that it would not only benefit the Tharus (Tribals) but also the country as a whole. Introduction The sub-Himalayan Tarai region of Uttar Pradesh is natural forces for centuries and have led a secluded inhabited by two important scheduled tribes, life.Even today, the Tharu depend upon the outside namely, the Tharus and the Bhoxax. The Tharus are world for only such articles as salt, kerosene, oil and found in the northern district of this area viz, Gonda, cloths. They make use of many plant species to meet Baharaich, Gorakhpur, Nainital and Lakhimpur Kheri.

It is the administrative headquarters of Gorakhpur District and Gorakhpur Division. The city is also home to Gorakhnath temple and many historic Buddhist sites and the Gita Press, world's largest publisher of Hindu religious texts. It is also the headquarters of North Eastern Railways and serves an important center for education and trade. Gorakhpur is a religious center containing many historic temples and sites for both Hinduism and Buddhism. It is named after the ascetic Guru Gorakshnath, a saint that popularized “Hath Yoga” a form of yoga which concentrates on mastering natural power. The Gorakhnath Temple where he studied is a major tourist attraction in the city of Gorakhpur. Gorakhpur has 10 railway stations within its city limit that is Gorakhpur junction, Gorakhpur cantt, Domingarh, Kushmi, Nakaha jungle, Maniram, Sahjanwa, Unaula, Sihapar, and Jagatbela.

    PLACES OF INTEREST Bansgaon (Pargana Unaula, Tahsil Bansgaon) The place which is the headquarters of the tahsil of the same name is situated in Lat. 26ē 33' N. and long. 84ē 11'E. at a distance of 22 km. south of Gorakhpur. Bansgaon is built on a rising ground overlooking the Ami valley, which terminates in the wooded ridge that marks the line of the metalled road just before the commencement of the Tucker bandh (embankment). Originally, it is said, the place was occupied by the chauhans, but they were ousted by the Sarnets who still commemorate their conquest by assembling in the month of Asvina to offer sacrifice at the ancient shrine of Devi. Despite its large population Bansgaon is merely a village or rather a collection of villages, for there are really several mauzas with a common site, including Bansgaon urf Shahpur (Badain)Donkhar, Majhgawan, Marutia, Bahidandi, Bedauli, Balua Gopalpur urf Gopalpur and Baklaha, but the average inhabitant is quite content to name them all Bansgaon. The area of the component villages is assessed to a revenue of Rs.3884. The fair of Dasehra is held here on the 10th day of the bright half of Asvina attended by about 4,000 persons. The old tahsil buildings in Baraban (Babain) were abandoned in 1905 and are now used for a dispensary, started in 1907. Now it is a pucca building constructed by Zila Parishad. The new tahsil together with the sub-registrar's office stand a few hundred yards to the south. At a little distance to the east of the tahsil headquarters is an inspection house with a court room for the use of touring officers, erected in 1905.
