White Tiger Time-Line Points of Interest October 1981 Elsa Buckner asks her son Charles what he wants for Christmas. “Karate lessons” he replies. It is the May, 1981 issue of Black Belt Magazine that sparks this adventure. January 1982 Charles Buckner becomes a member of the American Karate/Kung Fu Federation and begins training at Lou Casamassa’s Red Dragon Karate Studio in Upland, CA under dojo owner Sensei Tom Cosgrove and dojo manager Sensei Gino Fazio and attends classes five days a week. Shi-han Sensei Lou Casamssa Shi-han Tom Cosgrove Summer 1982 As a master orange belt, Charles enters the black belt trainee program and attends special Saturday classes, teaches private lessons and assists with full size classes. It is during this time that Charles is introduced to the business of martial arts and begins contemplating his own martial arts system. Sensei Gino Fazio and Charles Buckner (red) After opening his own dojo, Sensei Gino Fazio suffers a serious back injury and is forced to stop practicing physical martial arts for an extended period of time, perhaps even indefinitely. Charles meets martial arts master Sho Kosugi at a Red Dragon tournament and begins working with Azandi Aiken and training in Ninjutsu. Azandi is a student at the Upland dojo and had been cast in Revenge of the Ninja, the second ninja movie from MGM starring Kosugi. 1983 – 1988 Charles and his family move to Apple Valley, CA. Charles continues training on his own and informally with instructors in the California High Desert area in Aikido, Shotokan and Kung Fu. -

Rainville, 2021 You want to see the movies Sho Kosugi grew up watching, the ones that inspired animation designers and video game artists of the 80s and 90s, the ones the James Bond people ripped off in the 60s, but where to start? Or, you’ve amassed a collection of these gems already but know there’s more out there. Here’s a user- friendly reference for both pursuits, with quick-and-easy recommendations for Japanese ninja titles from the silent era to the late 80s — their general flavor and tone, varying trends and tropes, and a lot of surprises. CONVENTIONS OF THIS GUIDE: • TITLES — for better or worse I’ve used the most commonly used translations out there. It takes three approaches. The first is socio historical, with a particular focus on the history and development of martial arts practice in New Zealand. The second is socio-cultural and is concerned with the characteristics of the people . practising the various martial arts. The third is motivational and explores the reasons why people become involved in martial arts training and why they continue. The theories of risk and the risk society, and popular or mass consumer culture are used to help explain, and provide a social context for understanding, people's motivations. In addition, the black belt is examined in terms of its symbolic nature and its role in motivating people to begin, and continue with, their training. -

Impossible Bodies in Motion: The Representation of Martial Arts on the American Stage A dissertation submitted by Meron Langsner In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Drama TUFTS UNIVERSITY August 2011 © 2011 Meron Langsner ADVISER: Dr. Downing Cless Abstract This dissertation explores and interprets the representation of martial arts on the American stage as a specific manifestation of stylized stage violence. These appearances of simulated physical conflict relate to the larger embodied practices of both stage combat and martial arts, as well as how this phenomenon reflects societal understanding of the potentialities of the human body in motion. Chapter One is an analysis of the semiotics of simulated violence. Chapter Two is a series of case studies of mainstream plays and musicals that involve martial arts, and concerns both dramaturgical and production issues of staging simulations of advanced physical agency. Chapter Three concerns contemporary adaptations of Macbeth set in feudal Japan and the production and dramaturgical concerns of having samurai characters on the stage. Chapter Four discusses the Vampire Cowboys Theater Company, an award winning troupe based in New York City that is famous in part for their martial arts based action sequences. The term “Impossible Body” is used throughout this study to describe those movements that represent events that are in violation of Newtonian mechanics. The Impossible Body is often one with exaggerated agency and physical prowess, and is a phenomenon that often appears in various forms of entertainment when a character is written as a martial artist. These elements are placed in context by contemporary writings on violence and self-defense, existing scholarship on stage combat, martial arts history, humor, and critical theory. -
Hong Kong Filmmakers Search: Lau Kar-Leung
LAU Kar-leung 劉家良(1937.10.6–2013.6.25) Director, Martial Arts Choreographer, Actor A native of Xinhui, Guangdong, Lau Kar-leung was born in Guangzhou. His father Lau Cham was a pupil of kung fu master, Lam Sai-wing. Lau started practicing Hung Fist and moves from other kung fu clans at the age of seven from his father. He moved to Hong Kong in 1949 with his family and ventured into the film industry the following year, taking up roles as a martial artist and bit player. He was featured in a number of Wong Fei-hung films, including How Wong Fei-hung Defeated Three Bullies with a Rod (1953) and Wong Fei-hung’s Rival for the Fireworks (1955). In 1963, Lau became a martial arts choreographer and partnered with Tong Kai to design actions for South Dragon, North Phoenix (1963), directed by Wu Pang. The pair later shot to fame with their martial arts directions in The Great Wall Movie Enterprises Ltd’s The Jade Bow (1966) and were swiftly recruited by Shaw Brothers (Hong Kong) Ltd. After joining Shaws, Lau first took part as martial arts choreographer for Hsu Tseng-hung’s Temple of the Red Lotus (1965) and Chang Cheh’s The Magnificent Trio (1966). He later also worked with other directors. Lau and Tong collaborated and worked most often for Chang Cheh in his box-office hits such as One-Armed Swordsman (1967), Golden Swallow (1968), The Boxer from Shantung (1972) and The Blood Brothers (1973). In 1974, Lau ended his collaboration with Tong and followed Chang to film in Taiwan for Chang’s Film Co. -

EL DIRECTOR hmulik Firstenberg nació en Polonia el 13 de marzo de 1950, aunque pronto se mudó con su familia a Israel, donde creció. Pero no sería allí donde iba a desarrollar su carrera cinematográfica. En 1972, Shmulik se mudó a Estados SUnidos y transformó su nombre por el de Sam, mucho más fácil de pronunciar en su nueva residencia y que terminaría siendo su nombre artístico.
