White Tiger Facts White Tiger Time-Line Points of Interest October 1981 Elsa Buckner asks her son Charles what he wants for Christmas. “Karate lessons” he replies. It is the May, 1981 issue of Black Belt Magazine that sparks this adventure. January 1982 Charles Buckner becomes a member of the American Karate/Kung Fu Federation and begins training at Lou Casamassa’s Red Dragon Karate Studio in Upland, CA under dojo owner Sensei Tom Cosgrove and dojo manager Sensei Gino Fazio and attends classes five days a week. Shi-han Sensei Lou Casamssa Shi-han Tom Cosgrove Summer 1982 As a master orange belt, Charles enters the black belt trainee program and attends special Saturday classes, teaches private lessons and assists with full size classes. It is during this time that Charles is introduced to the business of martial arts and begins contemplating his own martial arts system. Sensei Gino Fazio and Charles Buckner (red) After opening his own dojo, Sensei Gino Fazio suffers a serious back injury and is forced to stop practicing physical martial arts for an extended period of time, perhaps even indefinitely. Charles meets martial arts master Sho Kosugi at a Red Dragon tournament and begins working with Azandi Aiken and training in Ninjutsu. Azandi is a student at the Upland dojo and had been cast in Revenge of the Ninja, the second ninja movie from MGM starring Kosugi. 1983 – 1988 Charles and his family move to Apple Valley, CA. Charles continues training on his own and informally with instructors in the California High Desert area in Aikido, Shotokan and Kung Fu. Charles’ deeper understanding of technique and philosophy were honed during this time. Our system didn’t yet have a name but its roots were set. 1991 Charles moves to Miles City, MT and begins preparations to open his own school in 1992 under the name “White Tiger Dojo”. He starts working with his first student privately and writes the “Snake” kata. This first student was a young man who was going off to Army boot camp soon and wanted some training before-hand. 1992 The White Tiger dojo opens. Among the first students to join, Chris Johnson, Bob Brown and Ruth Buckner begin their martial arts journey. 1995 White Tiger promotes its first black belt. After a grueling two part test, Sensei Chris Johnson is promoted to Sho-Dan. The test was conducted in two parts that involved a complete requirement exam on the first day in Miles City, MT and a continuous sparring black belt exam in Billings, MT that consisted of five black belt opponents. Sensei Chris had to “continuous” fight these black belts one after another for two minutes each with only a short break mid-way through the exam. Since then, the exam has never been repeated this way. Sensei Charles Buckner with Sensei Chris Johnson (red) White Tiger hosts the 1st Annual White Tiger Martial Arts Open tournament in Miles City, MT. Sensei Rod Martens wins Black Belt Grand Champion and Nikki Mags (a student of White Tiger) wins Under Belt Grand Champion. White Tiger opens a dojo in Glendive, MT. 1996 Charles joins Professor Chow’s Chinese Kara-Ho Kempo Karate under Regional Director Sensei Rod Martens. Back row: Fred Lindau, Sensei Ruth Buckner, D.J. Archer, Sensei Charles Buckner, G.M. Sam Kuoha, Kyoshi Ka’imi Kuoha, Sensei Dana Kuoha and Sensei Rick Kaplin Bottom row: Shihan Shane Thompson, Sensei Bucky Loomis, Shihan Chris Mendoza and Sensei Sandi Ando Sensei Charles Buckner and the future Grand Master of Professor Chow’s Chinese Kara-Ho Kempo Karate Kyoshi Ki’imi Kuoha With hard work and help from Ruth Buckner, Zac Unruh and Jolyn Hatvick, White Tiger opens a dojo in Terry, MT and for a short time a school in Baker, MT. Charles becomes a lifetime member of the World Black Belt Bureau and registers White Tiger with Master Kang Rhee as a martial arts system. Ruth Buckner wins Under Belt Grand Champion at the 2nd Annual White Tiger Open. In addition to the Miles City tournament, White Tiger hosts a tournament in Glendive, MT. Sensei Charles Buckner and Sensei Rob Shepard 1997 Charles is awarded Sho-Dan in Professor Chow’s Chinese Kara-Ho Kempo Karate and becomes Area Leader for Eastern Montana. White Tiger hosts its 3rd Annual Martial Arts Open Tournament. August 1998 Ruth Buckner wins Under Belt Grand Champion at the 4th Annual White Tiger Martial Arts Open. She remains to this day undefeated in under belt and black belt female and co-ed Sport Karate Tournament Sparring. This was also the first year that grappling was added to the White Tiger Open’s division list. She won this division as well. December 1998 Charles is awarded full instructor certification in Professor Chow’s Chinese Kara-Ho Kempo Karate by Grand Master Sam Kuoha. Sensei Charles Buckner, Sensei Ruth Buckner, Sensei Rod Martens and Sensei Harry Kimbley August 1999 White Tiger hosts its 5th Annual Open Karate Tournament. August 2000 White Tiger hosts its 6th Annual Open Karate Tournament. August 2001 White Tiger hosts its 7th Annual Open Martial Arts Tournament. June 2002 White Tiger hosts an open martial arts tournament and kick boxing card. 2003 – 2004 Sensei Charles leaves Kara-Ho Kempo Karate and focusses entirely on the development of White Tiger. Sensei Ruth and Sempai Kale Freilinger are instrumental in helping with this transition. Sensei Charles and Sempai Kale Freilinger at the Miles City, MT dojo 2006 Sensei Bucky Loomis takes over the Miles City, MT dojo 2007 White Tiger opens the Gillette, WY dojo. One of the first students to sign up is Sensei Eric May. Sensei Eric May re-locates to Rapid City, SD and opens his own dojo under White Tiger. October 2009 In conjunction with Sensei Harry Kimbley, White Tiger hosts the “Thunder Basin Path of Champions” open Karate tournament in Gillette, WY. Charles Buckner breaks the world record for the most concrete blocks smashed on the groin with a sledge hammer. Unfortunately, Guinness Book of World Records retires this record just before his attempt. The official record is held by Bibhuti Nayak of India, who smashed three blocks of 41 pounds each with a 14.7-pound sledgehammer against his groin in 2003. Charles bested this with four blocks of the same weight, dimensions and using the same size sledge hammer. May 28, 2012 White Tiger rank promotions and a seminar in which several of its instructors teach Aikido (Sempai Tony Becker), Knife Fighting (Sensei Chris Johnson) and Grappling (Sensei Jeremy Wilde). We continue to move forward. What will you add to this time line? .

• Conventions of This Guide
The VINTAGE NINJA Movie & TV Guide VOL. 1: JAPAN, LIVE ACTION — 1920s-1980s © Keith J. Rainville, 2021 You want to see the movies Sho Kosugi grew up watching, the ones that inspired animation designers and video game artists of the 80s and 90s, the ones the James Bond people ripped off in the 60s, but where to start? Or, you’ve amassed a collection of these gems already but know there’s more out there. Here’s a user- friendly reference for both pursuits, with quick-and-easy recommendations for Japanese ninja titles from the silent era to the late 80s — their general flavor and tone, varying trends and tropes, and a lot of surprises. CONVENTIONS OF THIS GUIDE: • TITLES — for better or worse I’ve used the most commonly used translations out there. These are often the most accessible references to these films so, even if the title’s been butchered, there’s still a practical advantage when searching them out. • VN as an entity has to be cautious when it comes to supporting/endorsing certain not-so-authorized film collecting activities out there, so sorry, there’s no links here... • YES THERE’S MORE TO COME! This will be updated often and I have a huge stack of discs and files awaiting input. Plus future volumes on Anime, Japan 1990—present, Hong Kong/Chinese films, ninja-like hooded heroes, and more. • Yes, we welcome corrections and additions. Email me through the website. • See the Appendixes at the end for more info! Images © Shochiku Co., Ltd, 1965. Text © Keith J.

  • Even If It Kills Me
Praise for Even If It Kills Me “A rock musician chronicles his adventures at a taekwondo dojo in Texas. “Blair’s debut book is a whirlwind through his broad range of experiences and eclectic interests. He is primarily known as a bassist for the alterna tive rock band the Toadies, whom readers may know for their 1994 hit ‘Possum Kingdom.’ But while Blair recounts his escapades with the band on the road throughout the work, the memoir mainly discusses the author’s love of martial arts. After settling with his wife in Amarillo, Texas, Blair deci ded to get in better shape by picking up a passion from his past: taekwondo. He takes the reader on a tour of the limited dojo offerings throughout the city before settling on a World Taekwondo Federation dojang led by a coach for the U.S. Olympic team. Shortly thereafter, Blair was a white belt in his early forties, sparring with teen agers far above his skill level, getting regular lessons in humility. The author writes in a wandering, conversational tone that can be digressive and difficult to follow at times. Occasionally, he includes personal critiques of his younger sparring partners that can seem oddly vindictive, but most of the time the narrative voice is amusing despite the excess of superfluous anecdotes. Once Blair settles into his dojang, he takes the reader through his growing obsession with taekwondo. He acquired equipment, trained constantly, and slowly won the re spect and friend ship of his more experienced peers in his quest to attain a black belt.

  • Pinholes of the 1960S MAY 1961 1962 1964 DEC 1966
How Ninja Conquered the World THE TIMELINE OF SHINOBI POP CULTURE’S WORLDWIDE EXPLOSION Version 1.2 ©Keith J. Rainville, 2019 How did insular Japan’s homegrown hooded heroes go from local legend to the most marketable character archetype in the world by the mid-1980s? VN connects the dots below, but before diving in, please keep a few things in mind: • This timeline is a ‘warts and all’ look at a massive pop-culture phenomenon — meaning there are good movies and bad, legit masters and total frauds, excellence and exploitation. It ALL has to be recognized to get a complete picture of why the craze caught fire and how it engineered its own glass ceiling. Nothing is being ranked, no one is being endorsed, no one is being attacked. • This is NOT TO SCALE, the space between months and years isn’t literal, it’s a more anecdotal portrait of an evolving phenomenon. • It’s USA-centric, as that’s where VN originates and where I lived the craze myself. And what happened here informed the similar spats all over Europe, Latin America etc. Also, this isn’t a history of the Japanese booms that predated ours, that’s someone else’s epic to outline. • Much of what you see spotlighted here has been covered in more depth on VintageNinja.net over the past decade, so check it out... • IF I MISSED SOMETHING, TELL ME! I’ll be updating the timeline from time to time, so if you have a gap to fill or correction to offer drop me a line! Pinholes of the 1960s In Japan, from the 1600s to the 1960s, a series of booms and crazes brought the ninja from shadowy history to popular media.

  • The Martial Arts and American Popular Media A
THE MARTIAL ARTS AND AMERICAN POPULAR MEDIA A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE DIVISION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAIʻI AT MĀNOA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN AMERICAN STUDIES MAY 2018 By Bryant Murakami Dissertation Committee: Joseph Stanton, Chairperson David Stannard Jonna Eagle Wimal Dissanayke Glenn Man Keywords: martial arts, film, television, sport, popular culture ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the representation of martial arts within American popular media with particular attention to the recent popularization and development of the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA). In its earliest form, the aesthetics, rules, and marketing of the sport were heavily influenced and borrowed from the martial arts film genre. Although the growth and popularity of the sport can be attributed to its “new-ness” factor or the way it might separate itself from other popular sports, I argue that MMA’s mass appeal is due in large part to the ways it utilizes aspects and expectations from the martial arts film and television genre. This use of genre conventions and iconographies in early MMA events helped to establish a sense of familiarity for audiences, while at the same time, promoting itself as a unique sporting competition, the result of which is the creation of both a new sport and a new niche category in the larger martial arts universe. This study provides the cultural and historical context needed to understand the significance of the sport of MMA as an extension of the larger world of martial arts and as a phenomenon that goes beyond the fighting arena, speaking to contemporary discussions on globalization and the media industry.
