Abstract: Romania is known among the main European honey producers, due to the variety of landforms as well as the diversity of the flora. Thirty-four honey samples of the acacia, linden and multifloral types, produced in eastern Romania and collected during 2013–2018, were physico- chemically analyzed using methods provided by the national and EU standards. The results of water-insoluble solids, color and refractive index were found to be 0.023–0.131%, 0.3–76.4 mm Pfund and 1.485–1.499, respectively. The moisture content ranged between 15.20% and 20.77%, solid substances content ranged between 79.23% and 84.80% and total soluble substances content ranged between 77.83 ◦Brix and 83.26 ◦Brix. The obtained values of specific gravity were from 1.414 to 1.450 g/cm3, pH ranged from 3.673 to 5.503 and free acidity ranged between 2.4 meq and 50 meq kg−1. The ash content and the electrical conductivity varied between 0.030 and 0.543% and 130 and 679 µS cm−1, respectively. Pearson0s correlation analysis showed an intense association of the ash content with electrical conductivity (r = 0.81). -

Strategies of 'Aesopian Language' in Romanian Literary Criticism Under

The Rhetoric of Subversion: Strategies of ‘Aesopian Language’ in Romanian Literary Criticism under Late Communism ANDREI TERIAN Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu, Romania This paper analyses the subversive strategies of ‘Aesopian language’ with reference to the discourse of the Romanian literary criticism written under late communism (1971-1989). The first two sections of the paper signal certain gaps and inconstancies in defining Aesopian language and in delineating its forms of manifestation; at the same time, they explain the spread of this subversive practice in the political and cultural context of Romanian communism. The following three sections analyse the manner in which Aesopian language materialized in the writings of some of the most important contemporary Romanian critics: Mircea Iorgulescu, Nicolae Manolescu and Mircea Martin. The final section of the study considers a revision of the current definitions of Aesopian language (through the concept of “triggers” theorized in this paper), a new classification of the rhetorical strategies acting globally in a subversive text, as well as a re-evaluation of the relevance of Aesopian language in the context of ‘resistance through culture’, which was the main form of opposition against the communist regime in Romania. INTRODUCTION In the Foreword to his famous pamphlet Imperialism: the Highest Stage of Capitalism (1917), V.I. Lenin cautioned his readers that the paper had been written ‘with an eye to the tsarist censorship’; therefore, he had found it essential to render his subversive doctrine ‘with extreme caution, by hints, in an allegorical language – in that accursed Aesopian language – to which tsarism compelled all revolutionaries to have recourse whenever they took up the pen to write a “legal” work’. -

Ioana-Mihaela VULTUR Universitatea „Petru Maior” din Târgu-Mureş Abstract: Conscious of the critical situation of the Romanian literature and its stagnation, Urmuz comes up with a strange way of perceiving the world around him and its manifestations. He chooses irony in order to fight the realist literature of his time and not only. By using this method, he brings forward the anti-literature. The Dada and the Surrealist movements identify Urmuz as their forerunner, due to his new technique of conceiving literature: weird hybrid characters, intertextuality (revived in postmodernism) unexpected juxtapositions and his new anti-social attitude. Keywords: Urmuz, forerunner, irony, realist literature, anti-literature, anti-social attitude Venind într-o perioadă în care scena literară românească era acaparată de tiparele modelului eminescian, la care se adaugă confruntările tradiţionalist-moderniste, grefierul de la Înalta Curte de Casaţie propune un tip de literatură care, bucurându-se de importante influenţe asupra scrierilor avangardiste ulterioare, va schimba discursul poetic. Într-o epocă în care realismul se bucura de cel mai mare prestigiu, Urmuz şi-a întors privirea şi a descoperit o nouă faţă a lumii, pe care a transpus-o în paginile sale bizare, împărtăşind visul lui Flaubert de a scrie o carte despre nimic, dând astfel startul rescrierii literaturii existente, el rămânând o figură aproape legendară în literatura română dintre cele două războaie mondiale.1 Acest început de rescriere a literaturii nu a întârziat să atragă după sine reacţii dintre cele mai diverse: simplă bufonerie, dar cu spirit şi compuneri ce nu pot depăşi limitele unor farse2, ori joc voluntar şi amuzant al unui temperament prin excelenţă satiric, cuceritor prin chiar excesul lor de absurditate3, în timp ce Geo Bogza e de părere că umorul autorului este doar o mască, iar Pompiliu Constantinescu insistă asupra celor două niveluri de lectură a Paginilor bizare. -

I put this book here for you, who once lived So that you should visit us no more Czeslaw Milosz Introduction* Holocaust denial in post-Communist East Central Europe is a fact. And, like most facts, its shades are many. Sometimes, denial comes in explicit forms – visible and universally-aggressive. At other times, however, it is implicit rather than explicit, particularistic rather than universal, defensive rather than aggressive. And between these two poles, the spectrum is large enough to allow for a large variety of forms, some of which may escape the eye of all but the most versatile connoisseurs of country-specific history, culture, or immediate political environment. In other words, Holocaust denial in the region ranges from sheer emulation of negationism elsewhere in the world to regional-specific forms of collective defense of national "historic memory" and to merely banal, indeed sometime cynical, attempts at the utilitarian exploitation of an immediate political context.1 The paradox of Holocaust negation in East Central Europe is that, alas, this is neither "good" nor "bad" for the Jews.2 But it is an important part of the * I would like to acknowledge the support of the J. and O. Fall 2020] ABSTRACT: Veronica Porumbacu (1921-1977) was a Romanian poet and translator who has been unjustly forgotten today due to her proletcultist poems of the 1950s. Yet her work was widely published and well-known during the socialist re- gime, and is especially relevant for the two decades of growth and ideological innovation of the 1960s and 1970s. In my article I analyze a remarkable vol- ume of hers published in 1966, situating it in the context of her work and in the wider frame of the political context of Romania. Contemporary Romanian Writers MINISTRY OF CULTURE A Mature Literature A few years ago, in Romanian literature there was a clear split – in terms of themes, imagery, and devices – between writing that was firmly grounded in the critical canons, on the one hand, and texts by young writers more in tune with new trends and more receptive to outside influences, on the other. Those who had only recently entered the literary arena had the air of being a group, and this came not only from their shared imagery, disinhibition and rebelliousness, but also from their redefinition of literature and the literary. In time this split has become blurred. Whether young or old, whether esteemed by traditional-minded literary critics or beloved by the online media and literary blogs that nowadays set the publishing trends, active writers, i.e. those who publish a book at least every two to three years, have become more professional. Today's osmosis, the crystallisation of a unitary literature, is undoubtedly a sign of maturity, of the fact that the post-1989 literary transition has been left behind, and (why not?) of intellectual generosity on the part of those literary generations that have already become established. The memoir-dialogue between Paul Cornea and Daniel Cristea-Enache excerpted in this catalogue is a clear illustration of this idea. Therefore, it is pointless to discuss the literature being written in Romania today in terms of different generations. However, the genres currently being tackled might paint a livelier, more dynamic portrait of Romanian letters. The novel, still regarded as the dominant genre and the one with the greatest public impact, wagers on authenticity, parody and irony, and the results could not be more diverse. -

CHAPTER ELEVEN PARADOXES OF OCCIDENTALISM: ON TRAVEL AND TRAVEL WRITING IN CeauşesCu’s ROMANIA* Can we talk about a unitary Romanian image of the West in the Cold War period? Any investigation of ‘the image of the other’ needs to spec- ify the range and nature of sources, as well as the limits of the source base. The few existing studies on Romanian views of the outside world under the communist regime tend to treat the early (pre-1965) period and stress the negative light in which the West was portrayed in official pro- paganda as against an idealised private view.1 The most detailed study of ideology in Ceauşescu’s Romania, while offering a highly complex and nuanced interpretation, maintains nonetheless that in 1970s and 1980s Romania ‘to be against the regime had become synonymous with being pro- European, whereas Ceauşescu and those in factions more or less allied with him ranted against Western imports and the Europeanising oblitera- tion of the national soul’.2 Here I use a previously neglected type of source, namely published and unpublished accounts of travel to western Europe and the wider world in the period 1948–1989, to suggest a slightly different line of thinking about the public image of the West in late communist Romania.3 Short of a com- plete survey, I have laid emphasis on establishing a base of materials so that research may develop in different directions henceforth. Examina- tion of several of these accounts suggests that the pronounced develop- ment of a strong national ideology under Ceauşescu was not necessarily incompatible with writing extensively about western Europe or even with the production of a pro-European discourse, often by the same writers.
