Dírím go háirithe ar an chlásal neamhinideach i gcanúintí na Mumhan. Más cúng féin i gcosúlacht an réimse súl sin, tá dhá comhthéacs níos leithne inar mhaith liom na ceisteanna agus an ianaise a mheá. Ceann acu sin teoiric ghinéar- álta na comhréire. Nuair a théitear i ngleic ar bhealach dáiríre le fianaise chanúintí na Nua-Ghaeilge, caithfear a dhul i ngleic fosta le fadhbanna bunúsacha teoirice nach furast a réiteach. Tá cuid mhór le foghlaim ar léibhéal na teoirice ó ianaise na Gaeilge agus tábhacht faoi leith, creidim, le fianaise chanúintí na Mumhan maidir le fuascailt na gceisteanna teoiriciúla sin. Ar an taobh eile, tá go leor le foghlaim faoi ghramadach chomparáideach na gcanúintí óna bhfuil foghlamtha le dhá scór bliain anuas faoi struchtúr ginearálta na hurlabhra, agus tá sé tábhachtach go rachadh an t-eolas sin i bhfeidhm ar an chineal léargais is féidir linn a chur i dtoll a chéile ar chóras chomhréire na Gaeilge. Níl á rá anseo i ndáiríribh ach rud an-simplí—is fearr a thuigfimid córas gram- adaí na Gaeilge má bhíonn súil amháin againn ag breathnú isteach go géar ar íricí na gcanúintí agus súil eile ag breathnú amach chomh géar céanna ar a bhfuil eile de éidireachtaí gramadaí ann i measc theangacha an domhain. Mar sin is fearr a aithnímid idir na tréithe sin ar scáileanna díreacha mhórphrionsabail na gramadaí iad agus na tréithe sin ar oráis logánta nó pharóisteacha iad. As an imoibriú seo idir prionsabail ghinearálta na hurlabhra agus an tsaoithiúlacht áitiúil a aibhríonn gach córas gramadaí. Is beag ábhar conspóide atá sa mhéid seo, is dóiche, ach ní i gcónaí a chuimhnítear ar an phrionsabal ar léibhéal na praitice. Ní suim liom cúrsaí staire san obair seo. Sé sin le rá, ní bheidh rud ar bith le rá agam faoi phréamha stairiúla na gcóras gramadaí a mbeidh mé ag plé leo, ach iad a ghlacadh mar chórais iontu féin mar atá siad inniu againn. Leanbh óg ar bith a mbíonn uirthi ceann dena córais chasta seo a oghlaim agus a láimhseáil, ní bhíonn cur amach ar bith aici ar na próiséis stairiúla a rinne an córas sin a mhúnlú. Mar sin féin, éiríonn léi an córas a thabhairt léi (agus é a athmhúnlú go minic fosta le linn di a bheith ag streachailt leis). Leanann de sin go gcaithfidh gur féidir cuntas sásúil a thabhairt ar na córais ghramadaí seo, gan cur amach ar bith a bheith againn ar an réamhstair atá taobh thiar díobh. Leanann de sin ina dhiadh sin arís go gcaithfidh taighdeoir ar bith ar suim leis acmhainn urlabhra an duine, go gcaithfidh sé é féin a chur san áit chéanna a mbíonn an foghlaimeoir ann agus í ag dul i ngleic le cas- tachtaí na gramadaí—í dall ar fad ar na fórsaí stairiúla a mhúnlaigh na castachtaí a gcaithfidh sí a bheith ag streachailt leo.     The Bildung Subject & Modernist Autobiography in An Béal Bocht (Beyond An tOileánach) Brian Ó Conchubhair University of Notre Dame The Irish Bildungsroman, because it employs the defamiliarising techniques of parody and mimicry, thus functions like the radical modern art that Theodor Adorno describes, which is hated ‘because it reminds us of missed chances, but also because by its sheer existence it reveals the dubiousness of the heteronomous structural ideal.’1 An Béal Bocht can be, and usually is, read as a parody of 20th-century Irish language texts. But it is, in equal measure, an homage to them and an appropriation of their stylistic conventions, motifs, and attitudes. The novel’s building blocks were assuredly those cannibalised texts, and from them O’Nolan creates a dissonant, hyperreal, but easily recognisable world. No less fundamental, however, is an outdated, hyper- masculine sense of Irishness and a fabricated sense of the cultural nationalist-inspired depiction of lived Gaeltacht experience. This mocking, ironic book is driven by vitriolic enmity to any external prescriptive account of Gaeltacht life and any attempt to stereotype or generalise Irish speakers’ experience. As Joseph Brooker observes, its ‘greatest significance is not as a rewriting of a particular book, but rather a reinscription of a genre.’2 As a synthesis of literary conceits, cultural motifs, and nationalist tropes, it marks a cultural moment in Irish literary and cultural history. It remains undimmed by the passage of time, but for all its allusions, parodies, and references, it continues to amuse, entertain, and instruct global readers with little or no Irish, as well as those with even less awareness of the texts from which An Béal Bocht is drawn.

    Lightest to the Right: An Apparently Anomalous Displacement in Irish Ryan Bennett Emily Elfner James McCloskey This article analyzes mismatches between syntactic and prosodic con- stituency in Irish and attempts to understand those mismatches in terms of recent proposals about the nature of the syntax-prosody interface. It argues in particular that such mismatches are best understood in terms of Selkirk’s (2011) Match Theory, working in concert with con- straints concerned with rhythm and phonological balance. An appar- ently anomalous rightward movement that seems to target certain pronouns and shift them rightward is shown to be fundamentally a phonological process: a prosodic response to a prosodic dilemma. The article thereby adds to a growing body of evidence for the role of phonological factors in shaping constituent order. Keywords: syntax, prosody, VSO order, rightward movement, weak pronouns, prosodic displacement 1 Introduction What are the mechanisms that shape word order in natural language? A traditional and still widely favored answer to that question is that syntax has exclusive responsibility in this domain; in some traditions of investigation, in fact, syntax just is the study of word order. More recently the possibility has emerged, though, that word order is determined postsyntactically, in the process of what Berwick and Chomsky (2011) call ‘‘externalization’’—the translation of the hierarchical and recursive representations characteristic of syntax and semantics into the kinds of serial repre- sentations that the sensorimotor systems can manipulate. The publication of the Irish-language translation of Dracula in 1933 by Seán Ó Cuirrín was a landmark moment in the history of Irish- language letters . This article takes as its starting point the idea that language is a central theme in Dracula. However, the representation of Transylvania in the translation marked a departure from Bram Stoker’s original . A masterful translation, one of its most salient features is Ó Cuirrín’s complex use of the Irish language, particularly in relation to Eastern European language, character, and landscapes . The article examines Ó Cuirrín’s prose and will explore how his approaches to concrete and abstract elements of the novel affect plot, character, and narration. The first section explores how Dracula is treated by Ó Cuirrín in the Irish translation and how this impacts the Count’s persona and his identity as Transylvanian . Through Ó Cuirrín’s use of idiom, alliteration, and proverb, it will be shown how Dracula’s character is reimagined, creating a more nuanced narrative than the original . The second section shows how Ó Cuirrín translates Jonathan Harker’s point of view in relation to Dracula. It shows that, through the use of figurative language, Ó Cuirrín develops the gothic element to Dracula’s character . The article then examines Ó Cuirrín’s translations of Transylvanian landscapes and soundscapes .

    Celtic Mists online essays Derek Mahon Wind and Limb: Patrick MacDonogh (from Selected Prose by Derek Mahon, Gallery Press 2012) Patrick MacDonogh (1902-1961), a contemporary of MacNeice and Kavanagh but, unlike them, out of print for a generation, published five collections of poems between 1927 and 1958 and was highly regarded during his lifetime, with a modest international reputation based on a handful of recurrent anthology choices. Not an immensely prolific output and, despite what amounts to a cult following, he has recently seemed in danger of slipping through the cracks of literary history, which is one of the reasons he needs to be reissued. He is also a very fine poet indeed, which is its own argument. The five collections were: Flirtation (G. F. Healy, Dublin, 1927), A Leaf in the Wind (Quota Press, Belfast, 1929), The Vestal Fire (Orwell Press, Dublin, 1941), Over the Water (Orwell Press, 1943) and One Landscape Still and Other Poems (Secker & Warburg, London, 1958) — a distinguished though not extensive body of work, one rendered even more exiguous by a self-critical severity which led him to discard, select and refine from volume to volume until, with the Secker collection, he arrived at an almost final text. The contents of the present volume ( Poems , Gallery, 2001) are based on that collection, while dropping eleven and adding eight, including six ‘new’ poems from MacDonogh’s brief final period, 1957-61. The Secker book, though relatively slim, was in effect a collected poems, ‘all that he wished to preserve’ arranged according to his own idea of his work, an order (not necessarily chronological) followed here.
