SARNA "Pues have never yet found an historian," John M. Neale com­ plained, when he undertook to survey the subject of church seating for the Cambridge Camden Society in 1842. 1 To a large extent, the same situation prevails today in connection with "pues" in the American syn­ agogue. Although it is common knowledge that American synagogue seating patterns have changed greatly over time - sometimes following acrimonious, even violent disputes - the subject as a whole remains unstudied, seemingly too arcane for historians to bother with. 2 Seating patterns, however, actually reflect down-to-earth social realities, and are richly deserving of study. Behind wearisome debates over how sanctuary seats should be arranged and allocated lie fundamental disagreements over the kinds of social and religious values that the synagogue should project and the relationship between the synagogue and the larger society that surrounds it. As we shall see, where people sit reveals much about what they believe. The necessarily limited study of seating patterns that follows focuses only on the most important and controversial seating innovation in the American synagogue: mixed (family) seating. Other innovations - seats that no longer face east, 3 pulpits moved from center to front, 4 free (un­ assigned) seating, closed-off pew ends, and the like - require separate treatment. As we shall see, mixed seating is a ramified and multifaceted issue that clearly reflects the impact of American values on synagogue life, for it pits family unity, sexual equality, and modernity against the accepted Jewish legal (halachic) practice of sexual separatiop in prayer.

    ABOUT THIS BOOK Jewish Life in Cleveland in the 1920s and 1930s by Leon Wiesenfeld This book, published in 1965, is best understood by its subtitle: “Memoirs of a Jewish Journalist”. It is not a history, but rather Leon Wiesenfeld’s accounts of some events, written from his perspective, which appeared in his Jewish Voice Pictorial. Wiesenfeld was more than a journalist. He championed the Jewish people and fought their enemies. He worked for an inclusive Jewish community, with cooperation between the “assimilated Jews” and the Yiddish-speaking Jews he wrote for who in the 1930s were the majority of Cleveland’s Jews. He was a passionate Zionist and a supporter of Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver. Wiesenfeld (Feb. 2, 1885 – March 1, 1971) was born in Rzeszow, Poland and worked for Polish and German publications before coming to America. He worked briefly in New York for Abraham Cahan's Jewish Daily Forward before coming to Cleveland in 1924. For 10 years he was the associate editor of the Yiddishe Velt (Jewish World), Cleveland's principal Yiddish-language newspaper, before becoming its editor in 1934. In 1938 he left to establish an English-Yiddish weekly Die Yiddishe Stimme (Jewish Voice) which failed after about a year. He then started an English language annual, Jewish Voice Pictorial, which endured into the 1950s. (From the entry in the Encyclopedia of Cleveland History.) The book’s introduction was written by Moses Zvi Frank, a long-time Jewish journalist. Frank’s review of the book in the Indiana Jewish Post of May 7, 1965 notes that he translated it from chapters Wiesenfeld had written in Yiddish.

    JACOB LASSNER BRIEF BIOGRAPHY Jacob Lassner is the Phillip M. and Ethel Klutznick Professor Emeritus of Jewish Civilization in the departments of History and Religious Studies at Northwestern University. Professor Lassner, who received his doctorate at Yale (Near Eastern Languages and Literatures), taught previously at Wayne State University where he was Distinguished Professor of Near Eastern and Asian Studies; Chair of the Department of Near Eastern and Asian studies; and Director of the Cohen/Haddow Center for Judaic Studies. He has also held appointments at the universities of Michigan; California- Berkeley; and Toronto (Shier Distinguished Visiting Professor). He served as Sackler Occasional Professor of Middle East History at Tel Aviv University and spent a term as the Charles E. Smith Visiting Professor of Jewish Studies at the George Washington University following his retirement from Northwestern.     THE ZIONISM OF THE JEWISH THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY: 1902-1948 Naomi W. Cohen t has long been commonplace in scholarly accounts to note the special bond between Conservative Judaism and Zionism. In The Political World of American Zionism, for example, Samuel Halperin wrote more than thirty Iyears ago: "The American Zionist movement derived its most unanimously enthusiastic and dedicated supporters from the ranks of Conservative Judaism." Yet the role played by the Jewish Theological Seminary, the acknowledged head of the movement, in forging the Conservative-Zionist nexus is less obvious. A study of the Seminary and Zionism from 1902 until the establishment of the State of Israel reveals neither unanimity nor ongoing consensus. Among the components that made up the school - administration, faculty and students, Board of Directors - different view of Zionism, reflecting a variety of backgrounds, religious beliefs, and political values, prevailed. At times the subject of Zionism exposed serious differences between the Seminary's administration and the affiliated arms of the Conservative movement - the Rabbinical Assembly and the United Synagogue - who usually outpaced the school in support of Jewish nationalistic activities. The overall picture differed markedly from that at the Seminary's older counterpart, Reform's Hebrew Union College (HUC). There, despite sporadic manifestations of Zionist sympathies from students and faculty, a tighter institutional structure (HUC was directly controlled by Reform's Union of American Hebrew Congregations) allowed the first presidents to steer the college along an official anti-Zionist course in tandem with Reform's rabbinical and congregational organizations. Before 1948 the Seminary never sought or mandated conformity on Zionism.

    Seymour Siegel Papers MSS Collection # 61 40 linear feet Biographical Seymour Siegel was born September 12, 1927 in Chicago, Illinois. He was educated at University of Chicago, received his M.H.L. in 1951 and D.H.L. in 1958 from Jewish Theological Seminary, New York City where he was a professor of Jewish Ethics and Theology. He was the author of hundreds of articles, editor of two books, lecturer, and was an authority on religious law. He served as Director of the United States Memorial Holocaust Commission, opened the door for the ordination of female rabbis, and articulated the Conservative view on abortion. Rabbi Siegel never married, he died February 24, 1988 in New York City Scope & Content The collection consists of the collected writings of Seymour Siegel arranged by subject. Included are such subjects as abortion, divorce, euthanasia, Judaism, religion, Sh'ma, Vietnam to name a few. Also included are his personal files arranged by subject with photographs, lecture and speech notes, course materials (bio- ethics, Jewish ethics, Nachman, Talmud), newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, and materials from the Presidents Commission for the Study of Ethical Problems in Medicine and Biomedical and Behavioral Research.
