Official Timekeeper PRESS RELEASE ROLEX RETURNS AS PREMIUM PARTNER AS ROLAND-GARROS CLOSES 2020 GRAND SLAM® SEASON Geneva, Switzerland, 28 September 2020 – The finest tennis players from across the globe will converge on Paris from 27 September to 11 October to compete at Roland-Garros. For the second year in a row, Rolex will be the Premium Partner, Official Timekeeper and Official Watch at this year’s final Grand Slam tournament, whose origins date back to 1891. Rolex forged its association with tennis more than 40 years ago when it partnered the sport’s oldest event, The Championships, Wimbledon. Since then, the brand has established a strong and valued presence in the game and developed lasting bonds with some of the greatest talents, including Swiss maestro Roger Federer, the 2009 Roland-Garros men’s singles champion, and Li Na of China, winner of the 2011 women’s singles title. Rolex now partners all four Grand Slam tournaments and the major organizations that administer the game worldwide. As the only Grand Slam tournament contested on clay, Roland-Garros presents a unique challenge to players. The slower pace and higher bounce of the ball on the red surface produces long, enthralling rallies and is rightfully considered one of the most mentally and physically demanding events on the calendar. Success in Paris requires competitors to have an abundance of stamina and play with pinpoint accuracy and precision, qualities reflected in Rolex’s own commitment to the continuous pursuit of excellence in its watchmaking. Over the years, many Rolex Testimonees have triumphed at the Stade Roland-Garros, most notably Chris Evert of the United States, Sweden’s Björn Borg and Justine Henin from Belgium. Evert won a record seven women’s singles championships, Borg six men’s singles crowns and Henin a record-equalling three consecutive women’s singles titles. PATIENCE, PRECISION AND RELIABILITY Rolex Testimonee Dominic Thiem is one of the most formidable clay-court players on the Tour and he returns to Roland-Garros for the seventh time in his career brimming with confidence following his maiden Grand Slam triumph at the US Open in New York earlier this month. The 27-year-old excels when playing in the French capital, his patience, precision and reliability during the inevitably gruelling rallies taking him all the way to the men’s singles final on Court Philippe-Chatrier in 2018 and 2019. 1/3 Official Timekeeper ROLEX RETURNS AS PREMIUM PARTNER AS ROLAND-GARROS CLOSES 2020 GRAND SLAM® SEASON Now, the Austrian has the Grand Slam pedigree and a champion’s conviction to master the tournament. Thiem has an enviable record on clay, winning 10 of his 17 ATP titles on the specialist surface, and he will be confident of continuing his rich vein of form as he seeks a second Grand Slam title. ROLEX TESTIMONEES Joining Thiem at Roland-Garros are two players who have already enjoyed Grand Slam success: Garbiñe Muguruza of Spain, who was crowned women’s singles champion in Paris in 2016, and the 2017 US Open winner Sloane Stephens. Like Thiem, the American was runner-up at Roland-Garros in 2018 and has the big-game experience to challenge for top honours once again. Just as Rolex strives for perpetual excellence in all its endeavours, these Testimonees continue to push each other to achieve greater success and etch their names into the annals of a tournament steeped in history and prestige.
