Fast forward to the present, and the Miners are once again blessed to be led by an individual very familiar to the area. Head coach Victor Aguilar is set for his second season on the job for not only his hometown university but also his alma mater. Aguilar earned both his undergraduate and graduate degrees from UTEP. He is also a great representative for the Miners within the tennis community, as he has been the top-ranked senior player in El Paso in his age bracket for the past 24 years. Overview Of The Roster Second-year head coach Victor Aguilar is armed with a roster highlighted by six returning letterwinners, though it is a youth- laden squad. Carolina DeLuca is the lone senior on the squad, and it will be important for her to be a leader in order for the Orange and Blue to experience a quality campaign. Also back in the fold is junior Martina Trierweiler. UTEP’s No. 1 player, Trierweiler posted nine triumphs in her return to the courts after an injury forced her to redshirt in 2009-10. Rebeca Calvillo, who paced the team in overall wins (19) while rating second on the squad for dual- match victories (10) in 2010-11, will look to build on that success heading into her sophomore season. It will be a similar story for fellow classmates Gabi Vazquez and Marie LeBlond, both of whom enjoyed stretches of success last year. Vazquez picked up nine wins, and forged a mark of 2-1 within Conference USA action. LeBlond also had nine triumphs, but she did her best work in doubles play with a record of 16-7. Junior Dariya Abdrakhmanova improved as the year wore on last year, going 5-2 through the end of the fall Home Sweet Home UTEP is fortunate to play all of its home matches at the historic and start of the spring. Each of the tournaments will be an opportunity for the Sun City in that timeframe, which was assisted by going 4-1 the squad to gain some confidence and improve before turning its in 2011. attention to the demanding dual-match portion of the slate. Things will not be easy for the Orange and Blue, at least in terms of having seven of the first nine matches away from home. UTEP’s initial home contest, one of eight on the year, will come against Northern Arizona on Feb. 3. Other teams slated to pay a visit to the Sun City | 4 include Air Force (Feb. 5), UT-Permian Basin (Feb. 24), UMKC (Feb. 26), New Mexico (March 1), Idaho (March 2) and Abilene Christian (March 31). In terms of Conference USA contests, the Miners will only have one regular-season league match-up (at Southern Miss, April 14, 2012). The 2012 C-USA championships will be hosted by Memphis, and action will commence on April 19, 2012. 2011-12 UTEP TENNIS FACT BOOK 2011-12 UTEP TENNIS FACT 2011-12 ROSTER BOOK | 5 2011-12 UTEP TENNIS FACT Carolina DeLuca L-R: Head coach Victor Aguilar, Martina Trierweiler, Dariya Abdrakhmanova, Carolina DeLuca, Rebeca Calvillo, Gabi Vazquez, Tetiana Koval- ska, Marie LeBlond, Anastasiya Sylenko & athletic trainer Mandie Lozano. Czech star Petra Kvitova heading to Sydney Monday 5 December 2011 World No.2 and Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova will play at the Apia International Sydney in January, tournament organisers announced today. The 21 year old Czech becomes the third reigning Grand Slam title holder to join the star-studded field, alongside French Open champion Li Na and US Open champion Sam Stosur. Kvitova, who also triumphed at the season-ending WTA Championships in October, said she was excited about making her debut at the Apia International Sydney. “I’m really looking forward to playing there for the first time,” Kvitova said. “I’ve never been to Sydney before and everyone tells me it is such a beautiful city so I can’t wait to get there and see the harbour and the stunning beaches. “I have had some great results in Australia over the years winning in Hobart and Brisbane, so hopefully 2012 will be my year to win the title in Sydney. “The Sydney event is really tough and most of the top girls play there each year so it is a great opportunity to get some good matches in before the Australian Open. “I really see the event as the perfect preparation for the first Grand Slam of the year and I really want to win my first WTA Premier title of the season there.” Tournament Director Craig Watson emphasised the strength of the women’s field at the Apia International Sydney, which is set to get underway on Sunday 8 January at Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre.

newsroom Sport Apr 22, 2020 “The world’s best indoor tournament” The move from Filderstadt to Stuttgart in 2006 marked the beginning of a new era for the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. Since then, spectators in the Porsche Arena have been able to watch all the game’s top stars live plus exciting and hard-fought matches – initially on a hard court and then on clay from 2009. We will take a look back at the highlights. 1 - 2008: The Williams sisters – family gathering in the Porsche Arena Serena and Venus Williams’ first joint visit to the Porsche Arena. Tennis fans are over the moon. Serena is the hot favourite and the No. 1 seed – and promptly starts her campaign as expected. In her opening match against Na Li, she kicks in the turbo to win the first set to love. Totally unperturbed, the Chinese sticks to her task with Asian implacability. She wins the second 6-1 and runs out a 6-4 winner in the third. What a rude awakening for the great Serena Williams. Family honour was saved by sister Venus who at least reached the semi-final where she lost to the eventual winner Jelena Jankovic. Honorary guest Larry Scott, CEO and Chairman of the WTA, is thrilled by what he has seen in Stuttgart: “The Porsche Tennis Grand Prix is the world’s best indoor tournament.” Page 1 of 7 2008: The Williams sisters (Serena l., Venus r.) together for the first time at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix 2 - 2010: Justine Henin wins with a wild card It had never happened before at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix – Justin Henin is the first player to win the tournament with a wild card.
