$2.1 Billion – ODU’s annual CONFERENCE USA

A PROUD HISTORY Conference USA was formed in 1995 and quickly emerged as one of the nation’s top conferences. The conference unveiled its name, logo and commissioner April 24, 1995, in Chicago. The league’s charter members included Charlotte, Cincinnati, DePaul, , Louisville, Marquette, Memphis, Saint Louis, Southern Miss, Tulane, UAB and USF. Eleven of the institutions began athletic participation in 1995, while Houston joined competition in the fall of 1996.

The league’s headquarters were established in Chicago and, after nine years, relocated to the current office in Irving, Texas. Britton Banowsky was named Commissioner in October 2002, succeeding Mike Slive, the league’s first commissioner.

C-USA added East Carolina (September, 1996) and the United States Military Academy (March, 1997) as football members. ECU began league competition in 1997; Army in 1998 and UAB began football play in 1999. The league added TCU and ECU (1999) for all sports and they began competition in 2001. USF started C-USA football in 2003. Marshall, Rice, SMU, Tulsa, UCF and UTEP became full-time Conference USA members for all sports in 2005.

In 2013, charter member Charlotte returned to C-USA and was joined by new members FIU, Florida Atlantic, Louisiana Tech, Middle Tennessee, North Texas, Old Dominion and UTSA. The membership is at 14 institutions with WKU joining the league on July 1, 2014.



By Ed Miller The Virginian-Pilot © March 26, 2015 NORFOLK From the NIT logo 8 feet or so behind the 3-point arc, Trey Freeman banked in a shot Wednesday night that will go down in Old Dominion lore, a buzzer-beater that sends the Monarchs to Madison Square Garden for the NIT semifinals next week. Freeman's 30-foot arcing runner off one foot kissed the glass and fell, lifting ODU to a 72-69 win over Murray State and setting off bedlam at the Constant Center, which had already been in full lather for more than two hours. Freeman's teammates mobbed him in the corner in a pile of arms and legs. "My boys were jumping on me," Freeman said. "We were excited because we're going to New York." The Monarchs are, to play Stanford on Tuesday. It is their first trip to the NIT semis since 2006. ODU (27-7) had to hold off a furious late charge by Murray State to get there. The Racers trailed by 10 with 3:39 left, but tied the game on a 3-pointer by Jeffrey Moss with 3.5 seconds left. "Deflating would maybe be the best word," when the shot fell, coach Jeff Jones said. But Jones gathered his team in a timeout and gave Freeman his instructions. He told him he would have time for two dribbles, that he should fight through any contact from Murray State defenders and launch the best shot possible. "Obviously, the one he chose was pretty good," Jones said. It's a play the Monarchs have worked on in practice with middling results. Freeman said he often shoots it after practice with graduate assistant Brian Gilmore, whose percentage is better. Regardless, Freeman executed it to a tee. After nearly being forced out of bounds, he came upon the NIT logo in front of the Monarchs' bench. "I was just trying to get it up with some arc on it," he said. "I thought it was on line." The rest was a blur. Jones sat on the bench, taking it all in. "I wasn't going to join in that scrum," he said, with a smile. Fans joined on the fringes, bouncing in celebration near the baseline. As in Monday's win over Illinois State, the building was electric, with 8,161 taking advantage of general admission seating to pack the arena. Freeman was four days removed from an ankle sprain. Although he was expected to play, it was a guess as to how effective he would be. If adrenaline has curative power, his ankle was going to be fine. And from the jump, the all-Conference USA guard looked to be his usual self, scoring eight of ODU's first 13 to push the Monarchs to a six-point lead. He finished with 25. For connoisseurs of guard play, there was much to like. Murray State's also put on a display, scoring nine of his 23 in the first half to keep the Racers within two. ODU could not have shot much better early in the second half, hitting 14 of its first 19. But the Monarchs had trouble handling Murray State's press late and kept sending the Racers to the free throw line, where they hit 24 of 35 on the night. Jonathan Arledge (12 points) hit four straight from the line to put ODU up six with 59 seconds left. Murray State pulled within three with 25 seconds left, but missed a chance to get closer when Jonathan Fairell missed two free throws with 14.7 seconds remaining. ODU's Richard Ross missed a pair a second later, leaving the door cracked for Murray State. Moss's 3 from the left corner with 3.5 seconds left hushed the crowd. Murray State (29-6) had won 27 of its last 28, and 12 of its last 13 on the road. Playing with a chip on their shoulders because of a perceived NCAA tournament snub, the Racers had won their two NIT games by 15 and 21 points. The pace had been in ODU's favor most of the night. But the Racers, who average 79 points, had succeeded in speeding up the game and pulling to the brink of victory. Murray State coach Steve Prohm praised his team's resilience, but lamented that they failed to corral Freeman on the final play. "He kind of slithered through that little side crack and banked in a tough shot," Prohm said. A shot that will go down in ODU annals. Ed Miller, 757-446-2372,[email protected]

HAMPTONROADS.COM & PILOTONLINE.COM © 1993 - 2015 Palmore ready to ride to ODU's rescue again By Ed Miller The Virginian-Pilot © March 25, 2015 NORFOLK Keenan Palmore admits it hasn't always been easy. The Old Dominion junior started 23 games as a freshman and all 36 last year, playing point guard for a team that made one of the biggest turnarounds in the nation, an improvement of 13 games. This season, Palmore hasn't started a game and has averaged just 11 minutes off the bench, 17 fewer than a year ago. Yet, when called on Monday night in ODU's 50-49 NIT win over Illinois State, Palmore delivered. His 11 points, nine rebounds and three assists were crucial. Just as important, in the big picture of team chemistry, has been his willingness to accept a diminished role without complaint, a sacrifice that hasn't gone unnoticed by his teammates. "Keenan's stayed positive," forward Denzell Taylor said. "He knew there were opportunities for him to help this team. I think he was just trying to figure out how he could do that." That opportunity came after an injury to leading scorer Trey Freeman, who sprained his right ankle in practice Saturday and was limited to 12 minutes against Illinois State. Freeman was clearly hobbled, and although coach Jeff Jones said he had "made some more progress" Tuesday, it's unclear how much he'll be able to play in tonight's quarterfinal game against Murray State. Palmore will no doubt be called on again to run the team if Freeman is limited. A backup point guard who has started 59 games is a luxury most teams don't have. Rarer still is the backup whose outlook has stayed as upbeat as Palmore's. "There hasn't really been a need to talk to him," Jones said. "Every day in practice, he's ready to go." The arrival of Freeman, a transfer from Campbell, signaled a sea change for Palmore, a mid-career demotion that would be difficult for any player. Palmore was no exception. "It was very hard at first," he said. "But my teammates are always encouraging me, on and off the court. I also talk to my mom a lot, so I've got a lot of people in my ear, keeping me focused." Through some lean times, to be sure. Palmore's minutes have been sporadic, ranging from 22 in a game at UAB to one against Marshall. With Freeman - who was an All-Conference USA pick as well as the league's newcomer of the year - on a late- season tear, Palmore had played just 23 minutes in the six games before Monday. Behind the scenes, though, he has played a larger role. From the start of the season, Jones had sought to manage Freeman's minutes in practice, to keep him from aggravating a sore foot. Most of those practice minutes have gone to Palmore. "It's not the same as playing in games," Jones said. "But he has had a chance to get out there with the first team." Jones said that even before Freeman was hurt, he had told Palmore that he would be needed against Illinois State. Palmore was one of the few Monarchs who played well in a 64-45 loss to the Redbirds in the Paradise Jam on Nov. 23. Jones thought his toughness would come in handy again against the physical Redbirds. It did. While not a threat to shoot from the perimeter and not as gifted a playmaker as Freeman, Palmore is a tenacious on-ball defender who can get to the rim off the dribble. He's also one of the team's best athletes, capable of playing above the rim and more than holding his own on the boards at just 6-foot-1. And with 98 career games under his belt, he's not one to shrink from a big moment. "I've been through it, so I already knew what it was going to be like out there," he said. Palmore is expecting another hard-fought game tonight. Murray State (29-5) has won 27 of its last 28 games, and is led by one of the nation's top guards in sophomore Cameron Payne, who averages 20.1 points, six assists and 3.8 rebounds. ODU beat Murray State 70-60 last year, a game in which Palmore scored 13 points and had four rebounds in 27 minutes. The Racers have virtually the same cast of players, but have improved across the board. Murray State averages 79 points per game and has knocked off four teams that beat ODU, and done so by double-digit margins. ODU (26-7) is much improved over last year as well. Freeman has been the biggest addition, but the Monarchs also are deeper, as Palmore demonstrated Monday. "I think that says something about his character that when his number was called, he responded," Jones said. "And we needed every bit of it." Ed Miller, 446-2372, [email protected]

HAMPTONROADS.COM & PILOTONLINE.COM © 1993 - 2015 Monarchs coach keeps treating doubters to "W's" By Ed Miller The Virginian-Pilot © March 12, 2015 NORFOLK Too old. Too vanilla. Too long out of sight and out of mind after toiling for 13 years in the Patriot League. Old Dominion's Jeff Jones was supposedly all those things two years ago, when his hiring was criticized by many as a curious and uninspiring choice. To critics, Jones was the opposite of the flashy types sought by many schools: the anti-up-and-comer, a dry throwback, consumed by Xs and Os. Two years later, Jones' hiring looks like a potential coup. ODU is 24-6 and in the discussion for an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. That assumes the No. 3 seed Monarchs don't cut down the nets at this week's Conference USA tournament. It's not out of the question for the league's hottest team, one that arrived in Birmingham having won six straight. In January, the Monarchs cracked the AP top 25 for the first time in school history. Fans have flocked back to the Constant Center. And with all but three players back, the outlook is even brighter next season. If anyone is entitled to an "I told you so," it's athletic director Wood Selig. He took considerable flak for hiring Jones, whom he knew from their days at the University of Virginia. But Selig can't say it. Not even he saw this type of season coming, just two years after ODU finished 5-25. "It would be a misrepresentation of me to say this is not surprising," Selig said. As for Jones, he never thought in terms of wins and losses. His goal when he left American University for ODU was simple: "Let's see how good we can be." He went about finding out in a systematic, even-keeled way. As the wins piled up, characteristics that seemed like liabilities suddenly looked like assets. His age? No, at 53 (now 54), Jones wasn't too old for a fresh start after all. He was seasoned, with a shorter learning curve than a younger coach would have had. Was he a bit bland? Maybe. But vanilla can be an ideal flavor enhancer, pulling all the ingredients together. Jones certainly has at ODU. Opposing coaches rave about the Monarchs' soundness on both ends - their offensive discipline, their defensive toughness. They lead Conference USA in both points allowed and field goal percentage defense, as well as offensive rebounding percentage - a stat that is a measure of effort and tenacity. A coach's son, Jones has been a coach's coach since his days at Virginia, and had long been regarded as a respected teacher of the game. But ODU's current players didn't know that. They weren't born when he took over at Virginia at age 29 in 1990 and were pre-schoolers when he was being fired in 1998. Coach and players got acquainted over pizza and wings last year. They sat in the locker room watching the NBA playoffs. It was a more relaxed setting than their first meeting, which was quick and awkward, because Jones had to return to Washington. "We just got to kick it with him in the locker room," junior guard Aaron Bacote said. "From that point on, I knew he was a good guy." On the court, players quickly found Jones would "push you to the limit," Bacote said. That was reflected in the results. ODU won 18 games with a roster short on size and numbers last year. The 13-game turnaround equaled the biggest in the nation. But Jones felt ODU had more in the tank. "He wanted to win right away," assistant coach Lamar Barrett said. "That's his mentality." Jones hadn't necessarily been looking for a change. He bristles at the suggestion that ODU has rejuvenated him as much he has the program. It's not as if Jones was mailing it in at American. His teams reached five conference tournament finals, winning two. He felt a 10-20 record during his final season was not the first rumbling of a slide. "We had a bad year," Jones said. "The first time in the entire stretch that we didn't equal or surpass the preseason prediction that the other coaches made for us. We felt like, after that bad year, that we would once again contend." American did, winning the Patriot League and reaching the NCAA tournament with Jones' players last season. The Eagles played for the league title again Wednesday night, still with his recruits. Rejuvenation? Jones had no need. "I was fine. I was happy. Things were good," he said. "I was optimistic about the future at American. "The thing was, once I got here, it was like a new challenge. I wouldn't say rejuvenated. It was a positive change. Having that new challenge is good." But if ODU is not getting a rejuvenated Jones, exactly, it is certainly getting an enhanced one. With more resources, his ceiling is higher at ODU. Jones sees the evidence on the recruiting trail, where he believes he's getting more bang for his buck than he did at American. "At American, you could go places but you never really knew who you had a legitimate shot at, because the local kids weren't thinking about coming to American," he said. "Here, and in the state, you can get out and feel like you are watching somebody who's going to like you back." So Jones gets out to more games during the season, helped by ODU practicing earlier in the day than American did. It also doesn't hurt that he's a bachelor during the week - his wife, Danielle, still works in Washington It makes for a stripped-down life, with basketball getting his nearly undivided attention. He's either at the office, at home or at a high school game, he said. Even when home, he's texting recruits, something he didn't do a lot of at American. It's all part of building something lasting, a task he may find easier to do in Norfolk than at American. When Jones does get out, he finds he's given up the anonymity he enjoyed in Washington. There, he could go out without being recognized. Not so here. There, he was apparently hiding in plain sight. "I think this job just scratched an itch for him," Selig said. "The timing was perfect. "And when you see how far and fast we've turned this around, you can't help but think, 'Where can we take it?' " Ed Miller, 757-446-2372 [email protected]

HAMPTONROADS.COM & PILOTONLINE.COM © 1993 - 2015 ODU's Ross: Bringing the noise, bringing the dunk By Ed Miller The Virginian-Pilot © March 7, 2015 NORFOLK Jeffery Moss starts at forward for nationally ranked Murray State, averages 11 points, four rebounds and two assists and shoots high percentages from the field, 3-point range and free-throw line. In short, he's a player. Last season at the Constant Center, he became a prop - a hurdle to be cleared, quite literally, by Old Dominion's Richard Ross. Trailing on a fast break, Ross caught a pass and took flight from a step inside the free-throw line. The 6-foot-4 Moss turned to face him but was too late to do anything but raise his hands and await the inevitable. Getting dunked on is an occupational hazard in college basketball, more so when Ross is afoot. The 6-6 senior has been on ESPN's SportsCenter more often than any Monarch save anchor Jay Harris (class of '87) and Ross' former roommate, Kent Bazemore of the Atlanta Hawks. His athletic performance art vs. Murray State made the SC top 10, as did a breakaway tomahawk at Missouri State in 2012. A dunk at Hofstra in 2013 was the night's top play. Ross appeared again just a couple weeks ago, when he caught an alley-oop pass and reverse dunked against Southern Miss. Like children, a dunker's offspring are each special in their own way and equally loved. But Ross is partial to those that energized his team and swung the momentum, as those against Murray State and Missouri State did. Two points occasionally can be worth more. The spectacular can inspire. But so can simple everyday extra effort. Ross strives to provide both. "I'm always going to go out and kind of be the energy guy: defend and rebound, block shots, dive on the floor, dunk," he said. "Those are the kinds of things I do." Ross has been doing them for a long time. His career touches three eras in recent ODU hoops history: the NCAA tournament glory years at the start of the decade, the 5-25 collapse of 2012-13 and the resurgence that has the Monarchs (23-6, 12-5 Conference USA) again in the NCAA conversation. Ross redshirted during the 2010-11 year, when the Monarchs hammered their way to 26 wins and a No. 9 seed in the tournament. ODU had the swagger and look of a Sweet 16 team. When the Monarchs fell to Butler on a last-second tip-in in the opening round, the sense of unfinished business was palpable. Ross was there, and as his career winds down, he feels driven to help ODU come full circle and return to the NCAAs. "It would mean a whole lot, obviously to leave the program where it started," said Ross, who plays in his final regular-season home game today against Western Kentucky. As for where Ross started, that's light years from where he is now. He arrived from Wichita Falls, Texas, more raw athlete than basketball player, with gifts that few possess. Most freshmen struggle with college conditioning. Not Ross, a former track standout. From the start, he was in front during team sprints, seemingly able to run all day. Junior guard Aaron Bacote wasn't around then, but he's marveled at Ross' stamina in the three years they've been teammates. "I've seen us run - everybody will be dog tired, and he runs and kicks, jumps off the wall and still beats everybody back down the court," Bacote said. "Or, doing a sprint, he backpedals while everybody else is running. I've seen it with my own eyes." Those gifts didn't immediately translate on the court. Ross didn't help himself off it either. Declared academically ineligible for the first semester of his redshirt freshman year, his career got a late launch. Ross averaged 4.3 points and 3.8 rebounds as a freshman and 7.3 points and 5.2 rebounds as a sophomore. He was well-established and comfortable. Maybe a bit too comfortable. At mid-career, he was jolted from his comfort zone with the arrival of coach Jeff Jones. It's not that coach and player didn't get along. Far from it. "He told me from the jump: 'You're my guy. I'm your guy. We're going to make this work,' " Ross said. To make it work, though, Ross would have to give more than he had. He needed to devote more attention to detail on the court, work harder in practice. To become a player who was less "all over the place," as Jones put it, and more focused, mature and reliable. "I said, 'These are the standards. This is what's expected,' " Jones said. "If you don't meet those, there are consequences." The consequences came when reserve Anton Larsen started ahead of Ross in the season's first game. It was an attention-getting moment for Ross, who engaged in some self-assessment. "Basically, he forced me to grow up," Ross said of his coach. "He held me accountable in a lot of ways I've never been held accountable for at this level. I just grew from there." The growth continues. Ross averaged 9.9 points and a team-high 7 rebounds last season in a team-leading 32.1 minutes per game. On a bigger and deeper team this season, he has more help on the interior, where he gives up inches and pounds to opposing power forwards most nights. Ross offsets his lack of imposing size with quickness, strength and athletic ability. He's become a better ball-handler and defender and expanded his offense to include the occasional slashing drive or mid-range jumper. He owns nearly half of the team's 96 blocked shots and is No. 5 all-time at ODU in that category. "He just battles. He'll do whatever you want," Bacote said. "All you've got to do is ask. Need a rebound? He'll clean the glass up for you. Perfect teammate." Vocal teammate as well. Ross has never been shy. By his own admission, he's usually the loudest guy in the gym. Even when he gashed his tongue earlier in the season, "he tried to talk," Bacote said, laughing. As his career winds down, his latest role finds him coming off the bench - a late- season switch that has helped spark the Monarchs, who have won five straight. Being a sixth man provides an outlet for Ross's unique brand of energy. He's embraced the role, part of a maturation process that Jones said has turned Ross into an unquestioned team leader. "You want to see your players develop and mature," Jones said. "As a coach, it's rewarding." More, even, than a highlight dunk. Ed Miller, 757-446-2372, [email protected]

HAMPTONROADS.COM & PILOTONLINE.COM © 1993 - 2015 Sometimes, ODU's Freeman has too much game By Ed Miller The Virginian-Pilot © February 21, 2015 NORFOLK Stockings were hung by chimneys with care. For Old Dominion, a brief holiday break from the grind of the college basketball season was at hand. Until late in the afternoon, when assistant coach Lamar Barrett's cell phone rang. "My wife said, 'Is that Trey?' " Barrett recalled, laughing. " 'Tell him it's Christmas Eve!' " It was Trey Freeman. He had gotten the itch. It can strike at all hours. Freeman is powerless to resist. Barrett received the yuletide call to come work Freeman out last season, when the junior from Kellam High was redshirting. A couple of Thanksgivings ago, Kellam coach Norman Hassell opened the gym for him. Just last week, Freeman's oldest brother, Aric Stewart, drove from Virginia Beach at 11 p.m. to rebound as he shot 350 free throws. They are enablers of an admitted obsession of ODU's best player, a physically unimposing 6-foot-2 guard so driven that the term "gym rat" doesn't do him justice. "He is just the hardest-working player I have ever been associated with in my life," Hassell said. "He has one speed, and it's super fast. He doesn't believe in breaks. He doesn't believe in timeouts. He will wear you out." That Freeman might wear himself out is a concern coaches have had to manage. This season, Freeman has been held out of the occasional practice to rest a sore foot. Following ODU's final game before a three-day holiday break, coach Jeff Jones sought out Stewart in the stands and told him not to work out his kid brother, no matter how much he begged. Stewart understands the need for an occasional day off. Freeman does as well, at least in theory. "All my coaches have been telling me that I need to chill out," he said. "But this is what I love do, and it's hard to stop doing something that you love." Freeman would love the game just as much if the coaches who now praise him as one of the top guards in Conference USA, if not the country, weren't some of the same guys who couldn't spare a scholarship for him. He'd work at it even if he was a little taller, a bit more athletic. But would he attack it with the same intensity? Not likely. "I'm extremely hard-headed," Freeman said. That's an understatement, Hassell said. "All he needs," he said, "is for someone to tell him he can't do something." And for someone to help channel his obsession. For years, those someones were brothers Aric, 15 years his senior; and Adrian, nine years older. Adrian worked at the Princess Anne Recreation Center, which became a second home for Freeman. Aric, who played at Kellam in the mid-90s, often put him through the paces. They did shooting drills, ballhandling drills, worked on developing the lost art of the mid-range game. During Freeman's junior year at Kellam, they undertook a midseason makeover of his shot, transforming it from unsightly - he was releasing the ball from behind his head - to textbook. Freeman now goes straight up, releases the ball at the top of his jump and lands in the same spot. Still, he was perpetually underestimated. He played on local AAU guru Boo Williams' "B" team, not the big squad. He led Kellam to a 27-0 start his senior year, but things were surprisingly quiet on the recruiting front. Hassell told college coaches they were missing the boat. But only little Campbell, from the Big South Conference, offered a scholarship. Looking back, Freeman understands what coaches saw - and what they couldn't see. "You can only judge the talent you see, or the athleticism," he said. "I'm not really that athletic, but I work really hard, and that's something they don't see." It didn't take long to see Campbell had gotten a steal. Freeman was named Big South Freshman of the Year in 2012 and was second-team all-conference in 2013. With his mother ailing, however, he wanted to return home. Miriam Freeman had contracted a painful bone infection called osteomyelitis. The thought of being 3-1/2 hours away while his mother suffered was too much to bear. Family is paramount for Freeman. It's a team in which each member plays a role. He calls his mother his best friend. Aric is a mentor, dispensing basketball and life lessons. Adrian is a pal, someone to grab a bite with after games, or "just ride around with, not really doing anything." His father, James, is "top dog," Freeman said. "I've got a real tight family," he said. "Coming back home has just been a dream come true." So tight that, despite interest from other schools, there was no question Freeman would transfer to ODU. Hoping to play immediately, he applied for a medical hardship waiver. When it was denied by the NCAA just prior to last season, Jones sat down with Freeman. "I told Trey, 'Who knows? This may end up being a positive thing,' " Jones said. "We've got to make it into something and I think he's certainly done that." Indeed, Freeman leads the team in scoring (16.0 points per game), assists (3.3) and minutes (32.9). When the Monarchs need a basket in a tight spot, they often call his number. His ability to get to the rim, shoot a 3 or stop on a dime and elevate somewhere in between make him one of C-USA's toughest players to guard. "One of the premier players, not only in our league but the country," Texas-El Paso coach Tim Floyd said. Floyd's flattery came with a price - the undivided defensive attention of Julian Washburn, a 6-foot-8 wing the former NBA coach has called the best defender he's coached at any level. Freeman was limited to nine shots and six points. Ever quick to critique himself, he chalked it up as a learning experience. "I was a little too passive," he said. "The next time I just need to go at 'em. It was a good experience, though. Now I'm ready for the next time - coming for 'em." Teams will be coming for Freeman as well down the stretch of the season, beginning today. The Monarchs host first-place Louisiana Tech, a pressure-oriented crew loaded with athletic guards. Jones believes Freeman is up to the challenge. And that ODU has finessed the challenge of letting Freeman scratch his ever-present basketball itch without overdoing it. "We've gotten to this point, and we've been very careful about not wearing him down," he said. "I think he's healthy and fresh enough that he can shoulder the load." HAMPTONROADS.COM & PILOTONLINE.COM © 1993 - 2015 Basketball | ODU's "Pops" has no gray areas By Ed Miller The Virginian-Pilot © February 7, 2015 NORFOLK Consider the graduate transfer, the one-season rental of college basketball. As both a seen-it-all vet and a newcomer to his team, he must strike a tricky balance. He's expected to lead, while learning a new system; required to bring experience to bear, without being overbearing. It can be a delicate dance, but it's one Old Dominion's Jonathan Arledge seems particularly suited for. A graduate transfer from George Mason, Arledge was quickly dubbed "Pops" by his new teammates, and not just because he's a fifth-year player. "I guess it's the way I act, my personality," Arledge said. "I'm really laid back, analytical about things." Arledge, 23, is a man of relatively few words, but firm convictions. He attended a Washington, D.C., charter high school focused on African history and culture. He helped found a social entrepreneurship society at George Mason. During his recruitment, he impressed coach Jeff Jones as someone who knew exactly what he was looking for. "It was apparent this was a different guy," Jones said. "He's much more mature. He's got some insight into things. "This wasn't a 17-year-old kid who hadn't been through the recruiting process, didn't know anything about college. He had his priorities pretty much established." Winning was among them. Arledge, a 6-foot-9 forward, has been a key piece of a 17- 4 team, averaging 8.5 points and 5.6 rebounds and bringing elements the Monarchs lacked a year ago. A smooth left-hander who is as comfortable facing the hoop as with his back to it, Arledge stretches defenses with his 3-point range, while also capable of providing an inside presence on both ends. "He's meshed," Jones said. "He fits in really well." Arledge has long been adaptable, dating to his days growing up in Maryland, where he dreamed of standing tall in the pocket as a college quarterback. The few times he'd set foot on a basketball court, he'd have a football in hand. "I'd be shooting a football, throwing it through the hoop," he said. He planned to play QB at Seneca Valley, a Maryland prep powerhouse. A move to a new high school and a growth spurt detoured him - reluctantly at first. Arledge recalls being at a barber shop at his new home in Fort Meade, Md., where his mother lives. The man with the clippers - a coach, it turned out - asked if he played basketball. Not really, Arledge said. The coach urged him to come out. A lanky 6-foot-5 by then, Arledge made the team at Meade High and caught the eye of another coach, Willie Sanders, at the Laurel Boys & Girls Club. Sanders, a former high school and junior college coach, saw a kid more willing than most to work and began tutoring Arledge. After a year at Meade, Arledge followed another Laurel coach, Levet Brown, to Kima Institute for Magnificent Achievers, a charter school in Washington. Arledge moved in with his father in nearby Silver Spring, Md., and began making a name in the D.C. prep scene. By his senior year, Vanderbilt and Georgetown were among those interested. "He was going to Georgetown," Sanders said. "They told me they just needed a couple of days. Next thing I know, he signed with George Mason." Arledge said he didn't know much about the recruiting process, including that there is a late signing period. But he was at peace with his decision, eager to put the stress of recruiting behind. Mason was close to home and not long removed from a Final Four appearance. Arledge liked the academic offerings and got along with the coaching staff. He was a starter by his junior year and would have finished his career there if not for a car accident the summer before his senior year. He hurt his back and suffered spasms for months. He tried to play through it, but appeared in just one game. Arledge sat out the season, received a degree in tourism and events management and was granted a medical redshirt. Looking for a new start, he took a couple of unofficial visits to Maryland and official trips to Eastern Michigan, Fairfield and ODU. "I was looking for a school that's on the right path to making the tournament and to winning their conference," he said. "One that has great players who have bought into the system and coaches that have bought into the players. "I felt that I got that from this program." Arledge arrived in July for the second session of summer school. It didn't take him long to blend in. Quiet and contemplative "Pops" was on the scene, parking his ego while getting the lay of the land. "I didn't want to come in like a know-it-all," he said. "I had to fit in with what they do here." It's been a fit. Sanders, still a mentor, said Jones has used Arledge just as he said he would. The shame, Sanders said, is that Arledge will just have one year in the system. ODU will gladly take it. Ed Miller, (757) 446-2372 [email protected]

HAMPTONROADS.COM & PILOTONLINE.COM © 1993 - 2015 Colleges Jeff Jones thriving in fresh start with Old Dominion basketball

By Isabelle Khurshudyan January 16

NORFOLK — Not long after Jeff Jones was hired to rejuvenate the Old Dominion men’s basketball program, his longtime assistant, Kieran Donohue, was at an athletic department function with Old Dominion Athletic Director Wood Selig when he had a conversation that proved prophetic.

“I think you’re going to get the best of J.J. here,” Donohue told Selig.

As much as Jones has benefitted Old Dominion, the university has returned the favor. At 54, Jones has gotten a fresh start after a 13-year stint at American while breathing new life into a program that went 5-25 the season before he took over. Jones completed the biggest turnaround in the nation last year when the Monarchs won 18 games in his first season as coach. This season, they’re off to a 14-2 start.

“I didn’t realize how much I needed a new challenge,” Jones said. “I loved American University. I still talk to those people and follow them very, very closely. But when you’re in any place for that long a time, this move was very good for me personally. It was a new challenge and it was different, and I found myself learning about what this new challenge is. That was very much a positive.”

But the move didn’t come without sacrifices. The crowded Washington sports market offered Jones an anonymity he preferred. The move also put geographical distance between Jones and his wife, Danielle, who remains based in the District as the executive vice president of expansion at Politico.

“It’s like you’re a rookie, and you always want to prove something,” Jones said. “Every game, you’re trying to prove something. Coming in here, we wanted to prove that we could get the job done.”

The introduction of Jones as the Monarchs’ basketball coach was met with grumblings, “to put it mildly,” Selig cracked. After a string of seven 20-win seasons in eight years, Old Dominion had fallen on hard times, going 2-20 before firing , the program’s winningest coach, late in the 2012-13 season.

Fans expected a young up-and-comer as the next coach. But Selig called on his former colleague at Virginia, where Jones played point guard from 1978 to 1982 before serving as an assistant coach for eight years and head coach for another eight. One Norfolk-area columnist wrote at the time that Jones’s hiring was “dumbfounding.”

Old Dominion senior forward Richard Ross had never heard of Jones until his hiring. But he did his homework and was pleased with Jones’s credentials, ignoring the criticism from some supporters of the program. Jones started getting to know the team by watching the NBA playoffs with them over pizza. Then he invited them to his home and had them give presentations on each other as a bonding exercise. Jones said it was “gimmicky,” but it worked.

“There were certain games last year where you could just look to the sideline and look at Jeff, and you could just tell he would do anything to help us win,” Ross said. “If he could be out there on the court, he would.”

With largely the same roster of players as the year before, the Monarchs finished 18-18. The improvement was even more remarkable considering it was ODU’s first year in Conference USA, which Jones called a “learning experience.”

Travel was no longer as simple as taking a bus, like the Monarchs did for all of their games in the Colonial Athletic Association. The C-USA schedule has Old Dominion playing as far away as Texas and Oklahoma. After spending his entire coaching career in the Mid-Atlantic, Jones didn’t initially know the personnel or styles of most of the teams in the new league.

The improvement nonetheless continued this season with the addition of transfers such as Trey Freeman, the team’s leading scorer, from Campbell and Jonathan Arledge from George Mason. Old Dominion won 10 straight games, including a victory over Virginia Commonwealth, to make the first Associated Press top 25 appearance in program history before dropping out after a loss at Western Kentucky last week.

When Jones first took the job, he was asked a lot about how many games he thought he would win or what his five-year plan was. He gave noncommittal responses, promising simply to get better. Jones isn’t the attention-grabber some ODU die-hards expected, but he has delivered on his promise faster than anticipated.

“People are always looking for the next hot thing,” Donohue said. “This young, dynamic, marketing whiz of a person, who’s also an outstanding basketball coach. Jeff’s a little more vanilla than that.

“Maybe Jeff’s just a boring basketball coach, but he’s a damn good boring basketball coach.”

Faith rewarded ODU soaring under Jones after restoring team's trust

Fast-forward to this season and things are looking up for those in the 757 area. Old Dominion has big wins 76% likely to 1 Duke win against rival No. 17 VCU on Nov. 29 and against Southeastern Conference foe LSU on Nov. 21.

For their efforts, ODU received national recognition in the form of a No. 25 stamped next to their school. Jones was in Cincinnati with his wife visiting his father in the hospital when he heard the news. Turns out, he reacted, as his wife and father described, “like a Grinch.” See who we

“I get it,” Jones said about the ranking. “The people that have been supportive of and loyal to Old Dominion for predict to win it all so many years, it was a big thing. But for me, and I think for the team, our goals are much higher than that, and so I didn’t want -- in any way -- the team feeling distracted or content.”

Fortunately for Jones, his best player and leading scorer Trey Freeman won’t allow the team to do so. Freeman transferred to Old Dominion from Campbell University in Buies Creek, North Carolina, following the 2012-13 season to be closer to his sick mother and their family in Virginia Beach, Virginia. After redshirting last season, he leads ODU with 16.3 points per game -- no other Monarch averages double-digits -- and is the biggest difference between a .500 team and a NCAA Tournament contender.

Freeman came home to ODU to be closer to his sick mother. He leads the team with 16.3 ppg.

But if you ask the junior, he's just thankful to be home. Freeman grew up watching his older brother play at Old Dominion, so when Jones reached out to him offering him a chance to work his way onto the squad and be closer to his family -- which Jones described as “very close”-- Freeman was more than appreciative, even if Jones couldn’t guarantee him anything.

“He was willing to give me the opportunity to come back home, be close to home and play again,” Freeman said. “So I was just extremely thankful and grateful for that.” If there’s one player that won’t allow noise from the outside to affect the team’s execution, it’s Freeman. In addition to being the leading scorer, he is the team’s best perimeter defender and has a work ethic that prompts Jones and the rest of the coaching staff to shoo him out of the gym after practices.

If you ask Freeman what Old Dominin basketball is all about, he’ll tell you the Monarchs “take on the character of our coach.”

“We’re striving for perfection,” Freeman said, “but we’re just trying to get better every day and every game’s a learning experience."

Freeman doesn't want to talk about the team's ceiling. He leaves that for his coach. After all, if the team emulates its coach's lead, Jones' take is as good as gold.

“I know these kids desperately want to be able to represent Old Dominion in the NCAA Tournament,” Jones said. “Those are the kinds of things that I think are in the backs of everyone’s minds.”

Old Dominion is no stranger to the Big Dance. The Monarchs have 11 appearances in the tournament, including wins in 1986, 1995 and 2010.

Freeman knows appearance No. 12 requires more than a good 15-game stretch. Plenty of teams start off strong and fizzle out. That’s just sports. The key is keeping the foot on the gas pedal.

“Coach is gonna put us in positions to be successful and he’s gonna have us right,” Freeman said. “All we have to do is bring the energy, the effort and focus, and I’ve got faith in all the coaches so everything else will work out.”

Freeman and the rest of the Monarchs are putting their hopes and dreams in Jones' hands. They trust him to take them to the promise land.

And it all started with some slices of pizza.

Back to Top ODU scout team plays important, if unsung, role By Ed Miller The Virginian-Pilot © January 15, 2015 NORFOLK If he didn't have a strong sense of his basketball self, Old Dominion's Trey Freeman could have come down with an identity crisis last season. One week at practice, he was tasked with being a paragon of unselfishness, a pass- first point guard who rarely looked at the rim. The next, he was an unapologetic gunner, launching shots from everywhere. It was enough to make a player's head spin. "That was the hardest part, especially when you don't play anything like the guy you have to portray," the junior point guard said. The members of this season's Monarchs scout team can relate. Known as the "white" team, they begin their week of practice by arriving 30 minutes before the regulars to assume their assigned identities. Their job is to simulate the opponents the Monarchs will face. It's not easy. "Some days, we have to learn seven plays in less than 30 minutes and run them to perfection during practice, to give the first team a good look," sophomore forward Brandan Stith said. "It's a pretty quick process." Scout teams are more often associated with football, but most basketball programs have some form of one. This season, ODU's is more talented than most. While many scout teams are made up mostly of walk-ons, the Monarchs' unit includes several scholarship players along with reserves who are part of the rotation in games. The core consists of walk-on guard Martin Shaw; transfers Stith and Stephen Vassor, who are sitting out the season by NCAA rule; and freshman Zoran Talley, who is redshirting. Reserves Nik Biberaj, Joe Ebondo and Deion Clark also wear white jerseys. ODU's three assistant coaches take turns running the team, depending on which of them has compiled the scouting report on a particular opponent. With four players 6-foot-7 or taller, the group can provide a formidable challenge. "Some days, they're more precise than the teams we'll actually play," said Freeman, who was on the scout team last year while sitting out as a transfer. That's the idea. The white team often has an edge early in the week, when the regulars have not picked up the plays they are running. A good day for the white team can be a long day for those in blue. "You found it, white!" coach Jeff Jones yelled at a recent practice. "You found the weak spot. Keep working." Such praise is music to the ears of the scout squad, which, above all else, is tasked with playing hard and creating a competitive practice. A certain pride comes with the job. For players sitting out the season, practices are basically their games. "We've used it this way for years," Jones said. "It's a great learning opportunity. For a guy like Zoran, for a guy like Brandan, being on the white team, they learn how to learn. "It's kind of a crash course. You're forced to pick things up." Indeed, if they weren't on the scout team, there would be limited opportunities in practice for players like Stith and Talley. Most of the repetitions go to those playing the majority of the minutes in games. Talley, a willowy 6-7 wing from Indiana, can often be heard exhorting his white team teammates. During prep for the Georgia State game, he assumed the role of the Panthers' prolific shooter, R.J. Hunter, which gave him a green light to fire away at will. Before the VCU game, the 6-7 Stith played the part of Rams banger Mo Alie-Cox, which gave him license to get physical. "Usually on the first day, they don't know the plays, so we kill 'em," Talley said. "Second or third day..." The intensity generally picks up when the regulars begin sniffing out the plays the white team is running. Shaw, a junior who is in his third year on the white team, said being on the unit has given him a broad basketball education. On days when the white team is clicking, it can even be fun. Ultimately, everyone benefits. Even if they don't play in a particular game, players know they've played a role. "If we've done our job, on game day, it's a great day for everybody," Shaw said. HAMPTONROADS.COM & PILOTONLINE.COM © 1993 - 2015 COURTSIDE CANADA: Denzell Taylor more confident in sophomore years with surging squad

BY BRIAN SWANE, EDMONTON SUN FIRST POSTED: MONDAY, JANUARY 12, 2015 08:07 PM MST | UPDATED: MONDAY, JANUARY 12, 2015 08:23 PM MST

Denzell Taylor does whatever he's called on to do to help the Old Dominion team win. (Supplied) EDMONTON - Denzell Taylor wasn’t even within 15 feet of the basket when the ball left his teammate’s hands. And then suddenly the Old Dominion forward was dunking home the rebound.

Taylor’s jaw-dropping play in a Monarchs’ victory over Georgia State last month, which made him famous for a night with an ESPN SportsCenter Top 10 appearance, happened so fast that it could serve as a microcosm of his team’s evolution.

Two years removed from one of the worst seasons in team history, the Monarchs cracked the national rankings for the first time in nearly four decades of NCAA Division 1 basketball, debuting at No. 25 in the Jan. 5 poll.

“For me it means a lot. Just to be top 25 in the country, that’s big for us,” said Taylor, a sophomore from Brampton, Ont. “I know Coach (Jeff) Jones probably tries to play it down but for the players it’s a big (achievement) and hopefully we can continue getting up and getting higher in the rankings.”

Things have been trending upward rapidly for men’s basketball at ODU, a school based in Norfolk, Va. The season before Taylor and Jones arrived, 2012-13, the Monarchs went 5-25. Last year they improved their record to .500, and now they’ve started this season 13-2, including 2-1 in Conference USA.

“I didn’t think it was going to be done this quickly, to be honest. Just the fact that we’re here is amazing,” said Taylor, who measures six-foot-seven. “As a freshman I knew I was going to play right away, so I was thrown right into the fire. I just tried to do whatever I could, and now just to see all the hard work our team has come through, from a 5-25 season to 18-8 last year and now having such a good start in Conference USA, is unbelievable.” Taylor is a big part of ODU’s success, though not typified by plays like his highlight-reel dunk but rather by the offensive rebound that preceded it. Last year as a freshman he averaged 4.4 points, 5.9 rebounds and 0.7 steals, this year’s he putting up 3.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 1.1 steals.

“I would say my role is pretty much the same, but this year I have a lot more confidence in what I’m doing, and I just try to do anything at that time that my team needs me to do,” said Taylor, who ranks near the top of Conference USA with 51 offensive boards. “Whether it’s defend, rebound, steals, whatever, it doesn’t matter. Whatever I got to do to be in the game and contribute is what I do.”

Fittingly, the Monarch’s expedited growth also mirrors Taylor’s own development. He didn’t start playing a lot of basketball until he was in middle and high school. By the time he was 17, Taylor was part of Canada’s bronze-winning entry at the FIBA Americas U18 Championship. Now 20, he’s playing more than 20 minutes per game for one of college hoops’ best teams.

“I didn’t start playing basketball until probably like 8th grade, so it was something new to me,” he said. “Growing up, watching Vince Carter was very inspirational, so after that I took on basketball and that was it, I’ve been playing ever since.”
