media release Monday 4 August 2008 World number one bound for Brisbane World number one Ana Ivanovic will headline the 2009 Brisbane International. The young Serbian star and reigning French Open champion said she was excited to be part of the newest tennis event in the world. “This is a terrific new event on the calendar in a lovely part of the world,” Ivanovic said. “It is a terrific opportunity. I am expecting a high quality field, some excellent weather and a great venue. It will be the perfect launching pad for my preparation for the Australian Open.” A delighted Brisbane International Tournament Director Steve Ayles announced the coup today. “Ana’s appearance is the ultimate endorsement for the event and the city,” Ayles said. “We plan to put on one of the best events in world tennis and now we can showcase the talent of the number one ranked female on the planet. She is a terrific player and a terrific person and I am sure she will love Brisbane as much as Brisbane will love her.” Ivanovic broke through for her first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros this year after making the final of the Australian Open in January, as well as last year’s Roland Garros final and Wimbledon semifinal. At just five, inspired by Monica Seles on television, she begged her parents to take her to the local tennis school in Belgrade. She developed her game practicing in an empty Belgrade swimming pool, stepping onto the circuit five years ago and taking the number one mantle in June. The world number one now adorns a postage stamp in Serbia and had Serbian president Boris Tadic as a guest at her 20 th birthday. “She was one of the darlings of the Australian Open crowds in January and we imagine Brisbane will quickly appreciate her demeanor, athleticism, power and particularly lethal forehand,” Ayles said. media release Tuesday 14 October 2008 Baghdatis named for Brisbane International Former Australian Open finalist Marcos Baghdatis is the latest player to confirm Brisbane as the start of his Australian Open campaign, joining the star-studded player line-up at the inaugural event. To be held at the new Queensland Tennis Centre in Tennyson from Sunday 4 to Sunday 11 January, the Brisbane International will offer more than $1 million in prize money. “Today we are pleased to announce Marcos Baghdatis as the latest player to sign up for the Brisbane International,” Tournament Director, Steve Ayles said. “Baghdatis captured the hearts of Australians during his phenomenal run to the Australian Open final in 2006, and who could forget his brave late-night fight against Lleyton Hewitt at the Australian Open this year. “Marcos is one of the game’s biggest personalities, and we can’t wait to welcome him to the Brisbane International.” The flamboyant Cypriot joins Australian Open champion and *world No.3 Novak Djokovic , and the ‘three musketeers’ of French tennis, No.15 Richard Gasquet , No.16 and Australian Open finalist, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga , and No.28 Gael Monfils. “Djokovic is sure to come out firing in Brisbane as he prepares for his AO title defence,” Ayles said. Three women have completed the singles Grand Slam in a calendar year: 1953 – Maureen Connolly; 1970 – Margaret Court; 1988 – Stefanie Graf. newsroom Sport Apr 22, 2020 “The world’s best indoor tournament” The move from Filderstadt to Stuttgart in 2006 marked the beginning of a new era for the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. Since then, spectators in the Porsche Arena have been able to watch all the game’s top stars live plus exciting and hard-fought matches – initially on a hard court and then on clay from 2009. We will take a look back at the highlights. 1 - 2008: The Williams sisters – family gathering in the Porsche Arena Serena and Venus Williams’ first joint visit to the Porsche Arena. Tennis fans are over the moon. Serena is the hot favourite and the No. 1 seed – and promptly starts her campaign as expected. In her opening match against Na Li, she kicks in the turbo to win the first set to love. Totally unperturbed, the Chinese sticks to her task with Asian implacability. She wins the second 6-1 and runs out a 6-4 winner in the third. What a rude awakening for the great Serena Williams. Family honour was saved by sister Venus who at least reached the semi-final where she lost to the eventual winner Jelena Jankovic. Unfortunately it was a smaller team than originally envisaged but they enjoyed being shown around the city and also a west coast trip to Muriwai where the gannets nest on one of the few mainland places in the world. Marie, Fanda, Jill, Cecilie, Andras, Pam lunching at a vineyard near Muriwai. We also played a match at the Parnell courts which NZ won, before a most enjoyable cocktail party at the home of our President Des and Jeannette Shaw.
