DAY 12 HIGHLIGHTS

• Four former US Open finalists are in the semi-finals for the first time since 2011 with World No. 1 and reigning champion Rafael Nadal leading the way. The three-time winner is joined by No. 3/2009 champion Juan Martin del Potro, No. 6/two-time title holder Novak Djokovic and No. 21 seed/2014 finalist Kei Nishikori. This is the first semi-finals with four past finalists since the 2012 (Djokovic, Federer, Murray, Nadal).

• In the doubles championship, No. 7 seeds Lukasz Kubot of Poland and Marcelo Melo of Brazil take on the all- American No. 3 seeds Mike Bryan and Jack Sock. This is a first-time meeting between the last two Wimbledon champions. Bryan and Sock are trying to become the first team to win Wimbledon and US Open in the same year since Jonas Bjorkman and in 2003.

• In the first singles match, Nadal and Del Potro meet in the third straight Grand Slam tournament and fourth in the past five (except 2018 Aust. Open) going back to last year’s US Open semi-finals, which the Spaniard won in four sets. Nadal owns an 11-5 head-to-head advantage over the Argentine, including 5-1 in Grand Slam tournaments. This is their third meeting at the US Open and Del Potro won in the semi-finals in 2009 en route to his first Grand Slam crown. Nadal is appearing in his seventh US Open semi-final (4-2) and he’s won his past four SFs since his 2009 loss to Del Potro. The 32-year-old Spaniard, who lost in the semi-finals at Wimbledon, has an outstanding 24- 4 career record in Grand Slam semi-finals. The only time he lost in two semi-finals in the same year was 2008. Nadal has played 15 hours, 54 minutes, the most of the semi-finalists, including a 4:49 marathon that finished at 2:03 a.m. Wednesday against Thiem. Nadal is trying to become the first player to defend his US Open title since Federer in 2008. He is also attempting to defend a Grand Slam title for the first time outside Roland Garros, where he’s defended eight times. Del Potro, who is 1-4 lifetime in Grand Slam semi-finals, is appearing in his second Slam semi-final this season after losing to Nadal at Roland Garros. The only other time he reached two Grand Slam semi- finals in a season was in 2009. The 29-year-old Del Potro is attempting to earn his 10th career win over a World No. 1. He has the most No. 1 wins by any player who has never held the top spot in the history of the ATP Rankings.

• In the next match, Djokovic brings a 14-2 head-to-head record against Nishikori, having won the past 13 meetings since losing in the semi-finals at the 2014 US Open. This is their fourth meeting of the season and Djokovic won at ATP Masters 1000 events in Madrid and Rome and in July in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon. Djokovic is appearing in his 11th US Open semi-final (7-3 record), the second-most in the Open Era behind (14). The 31- year-old Serb was the only semi-finalist not to lose a set in the quarter-finals and he’s won the last 10 sets in Flushing Meadows since dropping the third set tie-break to in the second round. The 2011 and 2015 US Open champion is attempting to reach his eighth final (2-5) in Flushing Meadows and 23rd overall Grand Slam title match (13-9). In his past US Open title runs, Djokovic won Wimbledon in the same year. If Djokovic reaches the final he will qualify for the season-ending Nitto ATP Finals in . Nishikori is coming off a five-set victory in 4 hours, 8 minutes over Marin Cilic in a rematch of the 2014 US Open final. Nishikori and Naomi Osaka are the first Japanese man and woman in the semi-finals of the same Grand Slam tournament. While Osaka is making her Grand Slam semi-final debut, Nishikori is appearing in his third Grand Slam semi-final (1-1), all in Flushing Meadows. He lost in the semi-finals to eventual champion in 2016, his only Top 10 loss (6-1) at the US Open. Nishikori is trying to become the second-lowest seed to reach the US Open final after No. 28 last year. He is also looking to become the first Japanese man to win a Grand Slam title.
