The three-time winner is joined by No. 3/2009 champion Juan Martin del Potro, No. 6/two-time title holder Novak Djokovic and No. 21 seed/2014 finalist Kei Nishikori. This is the first Grand Slam semi-finals with four past finalists since the 2012 Australian Open (Djokovic, Federer, Murray, Nadal). • In the doubles championship, No. 7 seeds Lukasz Kubot of Poland and Marcelo Melo of Brazil take on the all- American No. 3 seeds Mike Bryan and Jack Sock. This is a first-time meeting between the last two Wimbledon champions. Bryan and Sock are trying to become the first team to win Wimbledon and US Open in the same year since Jonas Bjorkman and Todd Woodbridge in 2003. • In the first singles match, Nadal and Del Potro meet in the third straight Grand Slam tournament and fourth in the past five (except 2018 Aust. Open) going back to last year’s US Open semi-finals, which the Spaniard won in four sets. Nadal owns an 11-5 head-to-head advantage over the Argentine, including 5-1 in Grand Slam tournaments. This is their third meeting at the US Open and Del Potro won in the semi-finals in 2009 en route to his first Grand Slam crown. Nadal is appearing in his seventh US Open semi-final (4-2) and he’s won his past four SFs since his 2009 loss to Del Potro. The 32-year-old Spaniard, who lost in the semi-finals at Wimbledon, has an outstanding 24- 4 career record in Grand Slam semi-finals. The only time he lost in two semi-finals in the same year was 2008. Nadal has played 15 hours, 54 minutes, the most of the semi-finalists, including a 4:49 marathon that finished at 2:03 a.m. Wednesday against Thiem. Nadal is trying to become the first player to defend his US Open title since Federer in 2008. He is also attempting to defend a Grand Slam title for the first time outside Roland Garros, where he’s defended eight times. Del Potro, who is 1-4 lifetime in Grand Slam semi-finals, is appearing in his second Slam semi-final this season after losing to Nadal at Roland Garros. The only other time he reached two Grand Slam semi- finals in a season was in 2009. The 29-year-old Del Potro is attempting to earn his 10th career win over a World No. 1. He has the most No. 1 wins by any player who has never held the top spot in the history of the ATP Rankings. • In the next match, Djokovic brings a 14-2 head-to-head record against Nishikori, having won the past 13 meetings since losing in the semi-finals at the 2014 US Open. This is their fourth meeting of the season and Djokovic won at ATP Masters 1000 events in Madrid and Rome and in July in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon. Djokovic is appearing in his 11th US Open semi-final (7-3 record), the second-most in the Open Era behind Jimmy Connors (14). The 31- year-old Serb was the only semi-finalist not to lose a set in the quarter-finals and he’s won the last 10 sets in Flushing Meadows since dropping the third set tie-break to Tennys Sandgren in the second round. The 2011 and 2015 US Open champion is attempting to reach his eighth final (2-5) in Flushing Meadows and 23rd overall Grand Slam title match (13-9). In his past US Open title runs, Djokovic won Wimbledon in the same year. If Djokovic reaches the final he will qualify for the season-ending Nitto ATP Finals in London. Nishikori is coming off a five-set victory in 4 hours, 8 minutes over Marin Cilic in a rematch of the 2014 US Open final. Nishikori and Naomi Osaka are the first Japanese man and woman in the semi-finals of the same Grand Slam tournament. While Osaka is making her Grand Slam semi-final debut, Nishikori is appearing in his third Grand Slam semi-final (1-1), all in Flushing Meadows. He lost in the semi-finals to eventual champion Stan Wawrinka in 2016, his only Top 10 loss (6-1) at the US Open. Nishikori is trying to become the second-lowest seed to reach the US Open final after No. 28 Kevin Anderson last year. He is also looking to become the first Japanese man to win a Grand Slam title. 2018 US OPEN – Day 12 Media Notes Friday, 7 September 2018 Page 2 of 12 ATP RACE TO LONDON (updated going into semi-finals) No. Player Points KEY 1 Rafael Nadal * 7,480^ Top 8 qualify for Nitto ATP Finals in London, 11-18 November 2 Novak Djokovic + 5,165^ * Qualified 3 Roger Federer + 4,800 + Qualifies if Djokovic reaches final 4 Juan Martin del Potro 4,430^ ^ Add 480 points for SF win 5 Alexander Zverev 4,365 6 Marin Cilic 3,815 7 Kevin Anderson 3,450 8 Dominic Thiem 3,365 9 John Isner 2,930 10 Kei Nishikori 2,475^ Most Grand Slam Semi-finals of All Time and Open Era 1 Roger Federer 43 2 Novak Djokovic 33 3 Jimmy Connors 31 4 Rafael Nadal 29 5 Ivan Lendl 28 Most US Open Semi-finals of Open Era 1 Jimmy Connors 14 2 Novak Djokovic 11 T3 Roger Federer 10 T3 Andre Agassi 10 T5 Pete Sampras 9 T5 Ivan Lendl 9 Most Grand Slam Finals of All Time and Open Era 1 Roger Federer 30 (20-10) 2 Rafael Nadal 24 (17-7) 3 Novak Djokovic 22 (13-9) 4 Ivan Lendl 19 (8-11) 5 Pete Sampras 18 (14-4) Most US Open Finals of Open Era T1 Ivan Lendl 8 T1 Pete Sampras 8 T3 Novak Djokovic 7 T3 Roger Federer 7 T3 Jimmy Connors 7 Most Grand Slam Titles of All Time 1 Roger Federer 20 2 Rafael Nadal 17 3 Pete Sampras 14 4 Novak Djokovic 13 5 Roy Emerson 12 Most US Open Titles of Open Era T1 Roger Federer 5 T1 Jimmy Connors 5 T1 Pete Sampras 5 4 John McEnroe 4 T5 Rafael Nadal 3 T5 Ivan Lendl 3 For the latest stats, facts and figures throughout the US Open, follow @ATPMediaInfo on Twitter. 2018 US OPEN – Day 12 Media Notes Friday, 7 September 2018 Page 3 of 12 [1] Rafael Nadal (ESP) vs [3] Juan Martin del Potro (ARG) Nadal Leads 11-5 07 ATP Masters 1000 Miami (U.S.A.)
