    2020 Western & Southern Open Doubles Field

    Western & Southern Open Defending Champions Headline Doubles Fields CINCINNATI (Aug. 11, 2020) – Both the women’s and men’s defending champions are among the initial entries to play doubles at the 2020 Western & Southern Open, which will be held Aug. 20-28 at the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Center in New York. The 2019 WTA doubles winners – Lucie Hradecka and Andreja Klepac – are joined by the ATP Tour champions – Ivan Dodig and Filip Polasek – to headline the early entries. Other notable entries on the women’s side include the teenage pairing of Cincinnati’s 18-year-old Caty McNally and 16-year-old Coco Gauff. Dubbed “McCoco,” the duo won a pair of WTA titles in 2019 – at Washington, D.C. and Luxembourg – and reached the US Open Round of 16. Elise Mertens and Aryna Sabalenka, who finished 2019 atop the WTA Porsche Race to Shenzen as the season’s No. 1 team, are also in the field. Reigning Australian Open singles champion Sofia Kenin, a 21-year- old American, has entered with former Western & Southern Open singles and doubles winner Victoria Azarenka. The top two teams in the ATP Tour doubles race are entered in the men’s draw. The No. 1 team of Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah is returning after reaching two straight Western & Southern Open finals. They are joined in the field by the No. 2 team of Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo. The ATP Tour No. 1 ranked singles player, Novak Djokovic, has entered the doubles draw with countryman Filip Krajinovic. An additional five women’s teams and six men’s duos will join the fields through on-site entries, while the tournament will award three wild cards into each draw to complete the 32-team fields.

After finishing 2017 as the No. 1 doubles team in the world, No. 7 seeds Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo will play their first Grand Slam semi-final of the season against alternates Radu Albot and Malek Jaziri. Then, No. 3 seeds Mike Bryan and Jack Sock, the Wimbledon champions, meet No. 5 seeds Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah, the Australian Open finalists. • Bryan is playing at his 24th straight US Open and first without his twin brother Bob. While Bob Bryan nursed a hip injury, Mike Bryan and Sock earned three wins in five sets to capture the Wimbledon title in just their second event as a team. If Bryan and Sock add the US Open championship, they will be the first team to win consecutive Grand Slam titles since Bob and Mike swept four straight from the 2012 US Open through 2013 Wimbledon. Mike Bryan would also break a tie with John Newcombe and set an all-time record with 18 Grand Slam men’s doubles titles.

In July, they became the first Colombian players to win a Grand Slam doubles title at Wimbledon. Cabal, who won the mixed doubles title at 2017 Australian Open with Abigail Spears, and Ivan Molina, who won the mixed doubles title at 1974 Roland Garros with Martina Navratilova, are the only other players to have a won a Grand Slam title at any level. In their 31st Grand Slam event as a team, Cabal and Farah won Wimbledon, defeating Frenchmen Mahut and Roger-Vasselin 67 76 76 67 63 in 4h, 57m to become the first Colombian Grand Slam men’s doubles champions. Cabal is the only partner Farah has had at Grand Slams. They are trying to become the first South American duo to win the US Open crown in the Open Era. One day after winning Wimbledon, Cabal and Farah became the first Colombians ranked No. 1 in doubles or singles. They are 4-2 in finals this season, winning titles Barcelona, ATP Masters 1000 Rome, Eastbourne and Wimbledon. They were finalists in Sydney and ATP Masters 1000 Cincinnati. Last year at the US Open, Cabal and Farah lost to eventual champions Mike Bryan and Jack Sock in the semi- finals.
