  • Biogeography and Evolution of the Carassius Auratus-Complex in East
Takada et al. BMC Evolutionary Biology 2010, 10:7 http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2148/10/7 RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access Biogeography and evolution of the Carassius auratus-complex in East Asia Mikumi Takada1,2*, Katsunori Tachihara1, Takeshi Kon2, Gunji Yamamoto2, Kei’ichiro Iguchi3, Masaki Miya4, Mutsumi Nishida2 Abstract Background: Carassius auratus is a primary freshwater fish with bisexual diploid and unisexual gynogenetic triploid lineages. It is distributed widely in Eurasia and is especially common in East Asia. Although several genetic studies have been conducted on C. auratus, they have not provided clear phylogenetic and evolutionary descriptions of this fish, probably due to selection bias in sampling sites and the DNA regions analysed. As the first step in clarifying the evolutionary entity of the world’s Carassius fishes, we attempted to clarify the phylogeny of C. auratus populations distributed in East Asia. Results: We conducted a detailed analysis of a large dataset of mitochondrial gene sequences [CR, 323 bp, 672 sequences (528 sequenced + 144 downloaded); CR + ND4 + ND5 + cyt b, 4669 bp in total, 53 sequences] obtained from C. auratus in East Asia. Our phylogeographic analysis revealed two superlineages, one distributed mainly among the Japanese main islands and the other in various regions in and around the Eurasian continent, including the Ryukyus and Taiwan. The two superlineages include seven lineages with high regional specificity that are composed of endemic populations indigenous to each region. The divergence time of the seven lineages was estimated to be 0.2 million years ago (Mya) by a fossil-based method and 1.0-1.9 Mya by the molecular clock method.

  • Annual Report on the Environment in Japan 2003 Published By: Ministry of the Environment Translated By: Ministry of the Environment Published in January 2004
AnnualAnnual ReportReport onon thethe EnvironmentEnvironment inin JapanJapan 20032003 Local Communities Leading the Transition to a Sustainable Society Ministry of the Environment To Our Readers This booklet was compiled based on the Quality of the Environment in Japan 2003 (White Paper), an annual report on the environment by the Government, published in accordance with a Cabinet decision made on May 30, 2003. The content of this booklet was edited to gear to a wider readership. The theme of this year’s White Paper is “Local Communities Leading the Transition to a Sustainable Society.” It introduces that daily voluntary activities carried out in local communities mark the first step in the transition to a sus- tainable society. The White Paper first shows the close interaction of the environment, society and economy, and the seriousness of the deterioration of the global environment. The Paper demonstrates that steady efforts at the individual and community levels will be essential for resolving global environmental problems. Individual actions are explored with an emphasis on the idea that if more individuals pursue environment-conscious activities, their activities will influence other actors, such as the government and businesses, and make it possible to reform the socio-economy as a whole. Initiatives by local communities are also examined. The Paper concludes that transition to a sustainable society is possible by (1) rais- ing the awareness of the whole community and building capacity (local environmental capacity) for the creation of a better environment and a better community, and (2) creating a model for protecting the environment and reinvigorating the community at the same time, and spreading the practice to other communities.

Email: [email protected] Received December 21st, 2010; revised February 6th, 2011; accepted March 12th, 2011. ABSTRACT We evaluate nitrogen oxides pollution in Takamatsu and Utazu area in Kagawa prefecture, Japan. Annually observa- tions for nitrogen oxides (nitrogen dioxide; NO2, nitric oxide; NO) (1990-2007) were obtained from data base of Ka- gawa prefecture, Japan. Changes in NO2 and NO in Takamatsu and Utazu area were evaluated and compared. In 2007, NO2, NO and NO2 + NO (ppm) in Takamatsu area were higher than those in Utazu area. However, NO2 /(NO + NO2) in Takamatsu area was lower than that in Utazu area. From 1990 to 2007, mean of NO2 in a day over the level of 0.06 ppm was 30 days in Takamatsu area and only one day in Utazu area. Mean of NO2, NO and NO2 + NO was signifi- cantly higher and NO2/(NO + NO2)was lower in Takamatsu area than that in Utazu area. In addition, NO2, NO and NO2 + NO were negatively correlated and NO2/(NO + NO2) was positively correlated with years (1990 - 2007) in Ta- kamatsu area. The level of nitrogen oxides pollution in Utazu area was lower than Takamatsu area.

  • Seto Inland Sea Art Tours: Naoshima & Teshima
Seto Inland Sea Art Tours: Naoshima & Teshima Takamatsu, Naoshima, and Teshima: Day 1 The journey begins in the Bikan Historical Quarter of Kurashiki City. The white walled, black tiled homes are well preserved examples of Japanese architecture dating back to as far as the 17th century. Located along a canal once used for transporting goods, the gently flowing waters reflecting classic facades, wooden boats drifting, and the bent willow trees swaying with the breeze transports one back to streets of late Edo Japan. After a brief step back in time, you will board the Marine Liner bound for Takamatsu City. The Seto Bridge was completed as recently as 1988 and the vastness of the swirling blue waters whisking past truly accentuates the remoteness the region has had for so long. After arriving in Takamatsu City, you will be driven to the sprawling Ritusrin Garden to witness a prime example of classic Japanese architecture. In addition to green ponds teeming with koi fish, swaying pines, and vibrant seasonal flowers, one can also witness the historical marks left by former rulers of Takamatsu. Most notably these include non-native plants gifted by the lord’s of other prefectures, trees planted by nobles, and even an artificial waterfall built for the amusement of a former lord of Takamatsu. During your time at the garden you will be treated to tea in a classically renovated tea house overlooking the park. Here you can enjoy the beauty and serenity in the same manner as those who have maintained and kept this garden alive for the past 400 years.

  • Systematic Catalog of Japanese Chrysomelidae12
Pacific Insects 3 (1) : 117-202 April 20, 1961 SYSTEMATIC CATALOG OF JAPANESE CHRYSOMELIDAE12 (Coleoptera) By Michio Chujo3 and Shinsaku Kimoto4 INTRODUCTION The Chrysomelidae (leaf beetles) is one of the largest groups of Coleoptera. About 30,000 species of this family have been described from the world. All of them are phy tophagous and some of them are serious injurious insects. Taxonomic studies of this group are important in connection with agricultural and forest entomology. In spite of the need, a complete catalog of Japanese Chrysomelidae has not yet been published. Since 1956, we have worked on a systematic catalog of Japanese Chrysomelidae. Kimoto spent from September to November 1959 working on type specimens of Far Eastern Chrysomelidae in continental United States and Europe as Bishop Museum Fellow in Ento mology, after his one and a half years stay in Hawaii, working on Chinese Chrysomelidae. A revisional paper on type specimens in United States and European Museums, is planned by Kimoto. The scope of this paper is Japan, the Ryukyu Is., and small neighboring islands. In regard to applied entomology, food plants are also listed. Many of the new combinations or status or synonymies are based on Kimoto's studies of type specimens. After Hornstedt, 1788, studies on Japanese Chrysomelidae have been made by various workers. In the latter half of the 19th century, studies on Japanese fauna were made by Motschulsky, Harold, Kraatz, Baly, Jacoby, Boheman, Weise and other workers, especially Baly and Jacoby. Those works were chiefly descriptions of new genera and species. Most of the Japanese species were described during this period.
