    Living in Washington, D.C. Embassies photo THE EMBASSY PRESENCE IN WASHINGTON, D.C. Priscilla R. Linn May 29, 2014 Finding embassies on a map of Washington, D.C. is a relatively straightforward task. They lie in northwest quadrant of one of the smallest capitals in the world, often lining up along (or close to) the avenues that city planner Pierre L’Enfant drew up over 200 years ago. Other locations in Washington, D.C. could, in principle, welcome many foreign missions. Reasons for the concentration of embassies in Washington hinge on the need to be close to the White House, U.S. Department of State, Congress, and international organizations. Embassies also desire a location in a prestigious neighborhood that can enhance both national identity and standing among nations in the international community. Essential diplomatic terms Since diplomacy often requires a specific vocabulary, this essay will clarify the meaning of several words used here. The Diplomat’s Dictionary defines the word “embassy” as: “The residence of an ambassador.” The Dictionary states that in loose, contemporary usage, the word “embassy” also refers to the office building of the ambassador and his senior staff. The HPO publication “New Construction in Historic Districts” identifies twelve (12) design principles to be considered when evaluating the compatibility of new buildings planned within existing historic districts. These design principles are: setback, height, orientation, materials, scale, color, proportion, roof shape, rhythm, details and ornamentation, massing, and landscape features.

    DC INVENTORY OF HISTORIC SITES H Samuel Hahnemann Memorial Scott Circle, NW The elaborate memorial to German physician Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843), the father of homeopathic medicine, is located on the east side of Scott Circle at Corregidor Street. A triumphal arched niche shelters the bronze seated portrait figure of the physician, at the center of a raised platform enclosed by a curved bench with bronze bas-relief panels depicting aspects of Hahnemann’s life. Erected in 1900, the memorial is by sculptor Charles Henry Niehaus and architect Julius F. Harden. There will be a desk near the Security Guard where external guests can pick up their Event Pass. All external guests must bring their picture ID (i.e. state driver license, passport). Please allow adequate time to pick up the Event Pass and pass through security. After picking up their Event Pass, external guests will go through security and proceed to the right to take the elevator down to B1 level. By Metro The nearest station on the Orange Line is Farragut West (about 2 blocks from the main World Bank building). The nearest station on the Red Line is Farragut North (about 3 - 4 blocks from the main building). For more information about the Washington, DC metro, see Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. By Train Most trains arriving to Washington, DC arrive at Union Station. To get to the World Bank, either take a taxi or take the Red Line Metro from Union Station to Farragut North. From there, it is about 3 - 4 blocks to the main World Bank building.
