Random House, 2018, 256 pp. Boel Ulfsdotter Over the past ten years, Mila Ganeva has written two books in the series Screen Cultures: German Film and the Visual published by Camden House. Both studies map German visual culture in relation to female agency, starting with the Weimar years, 1918–1933, in the first book, and moving on to what the Germans call the “long decade”, stretching from 1939– 1955, in the second. In the latter volume, Ganeva focuses on film and fashion from the perspective of German female consumers and spectators, and it is immediately obvious that her engagement with cinema is presented without any auxiliary theoretical discussion regarding the remits of either mass culture or visual studies. In particular, the study would have benefitted from a short introduction of the “rubble film” (films set in a city or landscape of ruins), preferably based on Robert Shandley’s study, which is also referenced in the book’s bibliography. I find it particularly odd that she does not link her own study more intimately with Hester Baer’s work on the topic in order to map out her subject matter for the reader, in the introductory chapter (Dismantling; “Film”). In terms of content, Film and Fashion Amidst the Ruins of Berlin: From Nazism to the Cold War consists of five chapters, and two case studies which Ganeva calls “Vignettes”.

The singer was Champion Jack Dupree, who, like many american blues and jazz musicians, was touring Europe, where he could make a better living than in the US. There, the audience had long turned towards psychedelic and folk rock, losing interest in the older blues, soul and rock’n roll acts that had dominated the late 1950’s. At the time, I was only three years old, so I am not sure if I genuinely remember anything about that evening. But my parents told me that I was so thrilled with Champion Jack Dupree, that at one point, I slid out of the church bench and speeded towards the low stage where the singer played his piano. He picked me up with a big smile, and let me sit on his knee for the entire song. Maybe that was the moment when I was first infected with the virus that would stay with me my whole life: american pop music, especially blues, jazz, soul, funk, and rock. In 1991, I had already built a considerable record collection, wherever I went, I was roaming the record stores, thrift stores and flea markets. It was while I was living in Brussels, when I picked up a “Live” record by Lionel Hampton from 1954 at the marché aux puces.

    Irmgard Knef Biografie Irmgard Knef, ist die 10 Minuten jüngere, Zwillingsschwester von Hildegard Knef, also Jahrgang 1925, geboren am 28.12. in Ulm. Nach einer gemeinsamen Jugend in Berlin, einer kurzen gemeinsamen Zeit als Kinderstars trennen sich nach dem Krieg die Wege der Schwestern. Mit dem Auftauchen der jüngeren und erfolgreichen Kessler-Zwillinge scheint eine weitere gemeinsame Karriere als Showzwilling wenig Aussicht auf Erfolg zu haben und so entschließt sich Hildegard Knef, 1948 für eine Solokarriere, verlässt mit Deutschland auch ihre Schwester und versucht ihr Glück in Hollywood. Der Kontakt zwischen den Schwestern bricht ab. Irmgard bleibt in Berlin und versucht- vielseitig wie Hildegard - ihr Glück als Schauspielerin, Sängerin, Tänzerin und Schriftstellerin. Ihr Leben spielt sich nicht in mondänen Kreisen ab sondern in Berliner Hinterhöfen und in der Glitterwelt des halbseidenen Showbiz. Sie arbeitet u.a. als Eintänzerin, Bordunterhalterin, Filmkleindarstellerin und Sprecherin bei der Deutschen Bundespost. Politisch engagiert sie sich für die Gebeutelten und Zukurzgekommenen der Gesellschaft, schreibt Autobiographisches und gründet eine Selbsthilfegruppe, den Verein „Sorella non grata e.V.“ für Schwestern im Schatten berühmter Persönlichkeiten. Ganz Knef ist auch sie eine Kämpfernatur mit Herz und Verstand, einer Berliner Schnauze mit Esprit und einem Humor der trotz Feinheit auch mal derb sein kann.     German Actresses of the 2000s – A Study of Female Representation, Acting and Stardom Verena von Eicken Doctor of Philosophy University of York Theatre, Film and Television September 2014 Abstract This thesis centres on four German actresses active from the year 2000: Nina Hoss, Sandra Hüller, Sibel Kekilli and Diane Kruger. These performers have embodied a range of multifaceted female characters, as well as offering insightful representations of ‛Germanness’ at home and abroad. Their films are emblematic of the revival of German cinema in the 2000s, which has seen the proliferation of commercially successful historical dramas and the emergence of the critically lauded Berlin School art film movement. This research seeks to contribute to German film studies by considering the role actresses have played in the context of the resurging German cinema of the new millennium. The four actresses are discussed both in terms of the female representations offered by their films, and as performers and stars. The films of Nina Hoss, Sandra Hüller and Sibel Kekilli explore the particular social, political and cultural circumstances of women in contemporary Germany, such as the ramifications of reunification and a changing economic order, the persistent female inequality in the workplace and the family, and the nationally specific conception of the mother role. Contributing to the study of film acting and performance, analyses of the four actresses’ performances are conducted to demonstrate how they enhance the films. Analysing and comparing the work of actresses from the 1920s until the present day, a German screen acting tradition is identified that is characterised by the actresses’ maintenance of a critical distance to the character they portray: female performers working across different decades share a stilted, non-naturalistic acting style, which imbues their characters with a sense of mastery and counteracts their frequent experience of oppression or objectification.

By Hiltrud Schulz “New German Star!” blared the headline for a LIFE magazine photo-series about the 21-year-old German actress Hildegard Knef, published on May 19, 1947. Knef was celebrated by German audiences for her role in Wolfgang Staudte’s The Murderers Are among Us (1946), backed by the Soviet film o!ce. A year later, she appeared in the internationally successful rubble film that was the first postwar production in the American zone, Between Yesterday and Tomorrow (1947, dir. Harald Braun). Nevertheless, LIFE noted, “Miss Knef, while pleased to be so much sought after by the rival occupying forces, would like even better to be in Hollywood.”1 • A 2016 DVD Release by the DEFA Film Library • A 2016 DVD Release by the DEFA Only a few months after publication of the LIFE article, Knef’s dream came true. She signed a contract with American producer David O. Selznick and arrived in Hollywood in April 1948. In charge of this move was Elli Silman, Knef’s first agent. Silman, a Jewish-German, left Germany when the Nazis came to power in 1933. A former secretary at the German UFA Studio, in the U.S. Silman first worked for a literary agency, before opening her own agency for writers and actors in Hollywood in the mid-1940s.
