  • Sir Edward Leigh Onorificenza Commendatore Osi My Lords
Sir Edward Leigh Onorificenza Commendatore Osi My Lords, Ladies and Gentlemen, a very good evening and welcome to the Italian Embassy. Thank you all for coming here this evening to celebrate the presentation of the Commendatore della Stella d’Italia award, bestowed upon our friend Sir Edward Leigh by the Italian President. First I would like to start saying a few words on this prestigious award. The different ranks of the order of the Stella d’Italia are bestowed upon Italians living abroad and foreign nationals, in recognition of their special merits in fostering friendly relations and cooperation between Italy and their country of residence and the promotion of ties with Italy. Since the start of the order only 4675 Commendatori of the Italian Star have been awarded. 1 A small army of friends of Italy from the four corners of the globe. I am glad that Sir Edward’s name has now been added to this prestigious list of distinguished individuals. It is my personal honor to welcome Sir Edward Leigh to the Embassy today. Sir Edward has been member of the House of Commons since 1983 and recently won his ninth consecutive parliamentary election. As well as being a well renowned politician, Sir Edward is also a qualified barrister, he practiced in arbitration and criminal law for Goldsmiths Chambers, and has served as an Independent Financial Advisor to the Treasury. Since 2011, he has also been elected as Chairman of the Public Accounts Commission, the body which audits the National Audit Office, responsible for saving the taxpayer over £4 billion.

  • Labour: a Better Future for Women
A BETTER FUTURE FOR WOMEN A BETTER FUTURE FOR WOMEN FOREWORD Labour Party values start from the belief that who you are or where you come from should never hold you back from achieving your potential. We have made great strides in improving equality for women, from the right to vote to the right to equal pay, and Labour has consistently lead this progress. Under the last Labour Government, the gender pay gap closed by almost a third, we opened 3,000 Sure Start Centres, extended maternity leave and introduced paternity leave, and transformed the way that police, prosecutors and courts dealt with cases of domestic violence. But progress for women has never been achieved by sitting back. In the last five years progress to close the gender pay gap has slowed. More women are low paid and on zero-hours contracts. Many families feel that they have never been so stretched. Instead of taking action the Tories have chosen to hit women harder, with women bearing 85 per cent of the impact of tax and benefit changes. Violence against women and girls is a national scandal. Rapes and incidents of domestic violence reported to the police have gone up, but the number of cases prosecuted and convicted has fallen. And there is still much further to go to change a culture that permits everyday sexism. Labour has a better plan for equality for men and women from the shop floor to the boardroom. We’ll do more to help women and men balance families and work through more free childcare.

  • The IR35 MP Hit List the 100 Politicians Most Likely to Lose Their Seats
The UK's leading contractor site. 200,000 monthly unique visitors. GUIDES IR35 CALCULATORS BUSINESS INSURANCE BANKING ACCOUNTANTS INSURANCE MORTGAGES PENSIONS RESOURCES FREE IR35 TEST The IR35 MP hit list The 100 politicians most likely to lose their seats Last December research conducted by ContractorCalculator identified the MPs for whom it will prove most costly to lose the selfemployed vote, and published the top 20 from each party. The results were based on data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and contractor sentiment indicated by a previous ContractorCalculator survey. The full results of this research are now published, with the top 100 MPs, ordered by risk of losing their seat, due to the Offpayroll (IR35) reforms that Treasury, HMRC and the Chancellor are attempting to push through Parliament. In total, 85 MPs hold a majority in Parliament that would feasibly be overturned if the expected turnout of IR35opposing selfemployed voters from their constituency were to vote against them, and we list the next 15, making 100 in total, that are potentially under threat if the self employed voter turnout is higher than expected. "This single piece of damaging policy could prove catastrophic for all parties involved, not least the Tories, who make up 43% of the atrisk seats,” comments ContractorCalculator CEO, Dave Chaplin. “There is also potentially a lot to gain for some, but those in precarious positions will have to act swiftly and earnestly to win over contractors’ trust.” How we identified the atrisk MPs The research leveraged the data and compared the MPs majority at the last election with the likely number of selfemployed voters in their area who would turn out and vote against them.

I commissioned this Review in July 2010 in the wake of celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of the Cadet Forces. I wanted to ensure that we were making the most of not just the Cadet Forces but the many other youth engagement activities that the MOD, including the Armed Forces, undertake. I believe that not enough is done to promote the work that we do in this area. For too long we have been keeping Defence’s Youth Engagement activities to ourselves.

  • Northamptonshire Conservatives Welcome Wind Farm Planning Announcement
NORTHAMPTONSHIRE CONSERVATIVES WELCOME WIND FARM PLANNING ANNOUNCEMENT Conservative Members of Parliament in Northamptonshire and the Party’s Parliamentary Candidate for Corby & East Northamptonshire, Thomas Pursglove, have today welcomed the changes to planning law which will ensure local residents affected by wind farm proposals will actually have a proper say in whether wind turbines are sited in or near their communities. New planning guidance supporting the planning framework from DCLG will make clear that the need for renewable energy does not automatically override environmental protections and the planning concerns of local communities. It will also give greater weight to landscape and visual impact concerns. In welcoming the announcement Chris Heaton-Harris MP (Daventry), said: “If you have been involved in any local campaign to fight an inappropriately sited onshore wind farm, you will know that on every occasion local opinion is trumped at the planning appeal by national energy policy/targets. The changes announced mean that this is reversed and more weight has to be given to local opinion. From what I can gather, subsidies will also be reviewed on an annual basis. This is superb news for those fighting unwanted wind turbines across Daventry and across the whole of England. I truly believe that this announcement brings about the beginning of the end of new onshore wind turbines across England. It is extraordinarily excellent news!” Peter Bone MP (Wellingborough), said: “Conservative ministers are to be congratulated for pushing through a reform to planning regulations which will mean that when local councils turn down wind farm proposals, they will not be overturned on appeal.
