Dear WDS Members, Supporters, and Friends, Welcome to the 2019 Women’s Dermatologic Society Annual Meeting & Luncheon! We are honored by your presence. As I reflect on my presidential year, I am so proud of all that we have accomplished, in terms of strengthening our core programs and creating groundbreaking initiatives that address total women’s health through the dermatology gateway. Under the umbrella of the Transforming Interconnecting Program Project, we launched our new Women’s Shelter Initiative. To date, 17 events were held in 10 different shelters, with more planned for 2019, including the first “Global Women’s Shelter” event in India at the end of March led by Dr. Rashmi Sarkar. The recent WDS Forum was a huge success with record attendance. As an added value we offered CME credits in total women’s health through the dermatology gateway, and invited speakers from other specialties to present. We established a Think Tank of key global thought leaders to advise us, and created an Advisory Board to the International Journal of Women’s Dermatology, consisting of clinicians representing other specialties. We launched the WDS Diversity Initiative to impact underrepresented minorities in dermatology, including The Summer Fellowship Grant for medical students in their first or second year. We also hosted a Diversity Networking Breakfast and Panel during the AAD for local minority students, and are now partners for the AAD’s Champions of Diversity In addition to these important advancements, we branched out globally with a presence at the EADV, and across the United States. We hosted 12 Regional Educational and Networking events, plus 38 Coast-2-Coast events and four Play Safe in the Sun events! I’m excited to see how this year’s significant achievements will blossom and grow in the future to serve our organization and our specialty. “NAVIGATING A LIFE IN JOURNALISM: A WOMEN’S PERSPECTIVE” Broadcast journalist Judy Woodruff is the anchor and managing editor of the PBS NewsHour. She has covered politics and other news for more than four decades at NBC, CNN and PBS. At PBS from 1983 to 1993, she was the chief Washington correspondent for the MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour. From 1984 – 1990, she also anchored PBS’ award-winning documentary series, “Frontline with Judy Woodruff.” Moving to CNN in 1993, she served as anchor and senior correspondent for 12 years; among other duties, she anchored the weekday program “Inside Politics.” She returned to the NewsHour in 2007, and in 2013, she and the late Gwen Ifill were named the first two women to co-anchor a national news broadcast. After Ifill’s death, Woodruff was named sole anchor. In 2011, Judy was the anchor and reporter for the PBS documentary “Nancy Reagan: The Role of a Lifetime.” And in 2007, she completed an extensive project on the views of young Americans, titled “Generation Next: Speak Up. Be Heard.” Two hour-long documentaries aired on PBS, along with a series of reports on the NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, NPR, in USA Today and on Yahoo News. From 2006 – 2013, Judy anchored a monthly program for Bloomberg Television, “Conversations with Judy Woodruff.” In 2006, she was a visiting professor at Duke University’s Terry Sanford Institute of Public Policy. In 2005, she was a visiting fellow at Harvard University’s Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy. At NBC News, Woodruff was White House correspondent from 1977 to 1982. For one year after that she served as NBC’s Today Show chief Washington correspondent. She wrote the book, This is Judy Woodruff at the White House, published in 1982 by Addison-Wesley. Her reporting career began in Atlanta, Georgia, where she covered state and local government. Woodruff is a founding co-chair of the International Women’s Media Foundation, an organization dedicated to promoting and encouraging women in journalism and communication industries worldwide. She serves on the boards of trustee of the Freedom Forum, The Duke Endowment and the Carnegie Corporation of New York, and is a director of Public Radio International and the National Association to End Homelessness. She is a former member of the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics, a former director of the National Museum of American History and a former trustee of the Urban Institute. Judy is a graduate of Duke University, where she is a trustee emerita. She is the recent recipient of the Radcliffe Medal, the Poynter Medal for Lifetime Achievement in Journalism, the Gwen Ifill Press Freedom Award from the Committee to Protect Journalists and the Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism from Arizona State University. She received the Edward R. Murrow Lifetime Achievement Award in Television from Washington State University, the Gaylord Prize for Excellence in Journalism and Mass Communication from the University of Oklahoma and the Al Neuharth Award for Excellence in the Media from the University of South Dakota. She was inducted into the Georgia Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame and received the Leonard Zeidenberg First Amendment Award from the Radio Television Digital News Association and the Duke Distinguished Alumni Award, among others. She is the recipient of more than 25 honorary degrees. Judy lives in Washington, DC, with her husband, journalist Al Hunt, and they are the parents of three children: Jeffrey, Benjamin and Lauren.

Personal Note/ Statement of Thanks: I am both honored and humbled to receive this award which is especially meaningful as it comes from my peers. I share this award with all those who have endeavored to create such a successful organization - the WDS. It is important to acknowledge and thank all those who have supported me through the years in so many ways. ‘Legacy’ does not occur in a vacuum. This organization is full of others who believe in dermatology, service, mentorship and quality care for our patients. Special thanks to Deirdre Hooper who Chaired this wonderful event, to Pearl Grimes the WDS President and to the Legacy Council. Legacy is often defined as something handed down or left behind – a gift of sorts. When I think about my personal ‘Legacy’, there are two parts. What was handed to me, and what I might have passed on that benefited someone else. It would be impossible to mention all that has been given to me. One thing I hope I may have passed down is the gift of giving individuals the courage togo for it even if it was not on the agenda. Standing for what they believe is right and just and not yielding to external pressure, of following their dreams and taking chances, of being curious and excited about learning new things, of following a passion or a dream while maintaining their core values and remembering that family and friends are always a priority. I benefited from these legacy gifts handed to me. It led to leadership roles in WDS and to the Presidency of the AAD –but the most important gift has been making lifetime friends - and having a support group that nourished and enriched me -- both professionally and personally.

It is truly one of the highest points of my career, as it has been an honor to help foster the growth of The Women’s Dermatologic Society into becoming a true leader for the Mentorship and Leadership of women and men in Dermatology. I am humbled to have played a small part in supporting this remarkable platform which mentors young physicians into leadership positions, department chairs, presidents of prestigious dermatologic organizations, both nationally and internationally, and its support of programs that ensure sun protection, skin health, and leading the charge in women’s holistic wellness. Having worked on the Board, Executive Committee, and as Treasurer overseeing the financial growth of the organization, I have been fortunate enough to witness the development of so many amazing stars in Dermatology. It has taught me to be a better dermatologist and a better friend to my peers in our specialty. I look forward to this society continuing to flourish over the coming years. FREE TO PUBLISH ABOUT THE JOURNAL The IJWD publishes articles pertaining to dermatologic medical, surgical and cosmetic issues faced by female patients and their families. In 2017 IJWD became indexed on PubMed Central. We are interested in original research articles, review articles, unusual case reports, new treatments, clinical trials, education, mentorship and viewpoint articles. Very important articles will have accompanying editorials. Topics which our subsections editors look forward to welcoming include: • Women’s Health • Medical Dermatology • Pediatric Dermatology • Oncology, Surgery, and Aesthetics • Society Articles dealing with ethical issues in dermatology and medical legal scenarios are also welcome. We aim for rapid peer review from the academic leadership of the WDS as well as experts throughout the world. We will have open access of the accepted peer-reviewed articles even before the final proofs are compiled, allowing the work to be available as soon as possible. We cater to an audience of dermatologists, scientists, educational experts, family practitioners, pediatricians, gynecologists and obstetricians, plastic surgeons, rheumatologists, internists, family physicians and pharmacologists. International Pioneer Award – Call for Nominations The WDS International Pioneer Award recognizes an individual who has enhanced the role of women in dermatology, has served as a mentor or role model for women, has achieved accomplishments that have impacted the specialty of dermatology or medicine, and is recognized as a pioneer or trailblazer for women’s issues or women in dermatology. This award is given every 4 years at the WDS International Forum during the World Congress of Dermatology to an individual who has made a difference for women in dermatology at a global level. Nominations are accepted until March 29, 2019 from WDS Members, and will be reviewed by the WDS International Sections Committee. Submit nominations to [email protected] with the nominee’s name, and letter(s) of recommendation. Be sure to include his/her contributions to WDS within your letter.

Mentorship Award Program The WDS Mentorship Award Program was created to help promote the concept of Mentorship within the WDS by establishing long-term relationships between Mentors and Mentees. PURPOSE OF AWARD The purpose of the award is to develop mentoring relationships that might not otherwise be possible due to distance or funding availability. The program helps develop leadership potential in candidates who have shown early promise through exceptional activities, which will enhance their contributions to dermatology and medicine. CRITERIA • All applicants must be dermatology residents in training or junior faculty out of training five years or less at North American institutions. • All applicants must be current or pending members of WDS. (Membership is free to residents and fellows. If you’re not currently a member, simply apply online before submitting your award application). • Either the Mentor or Mentee must be a woman. • The Mentorship award is not intended to cover indirect or overhead costs. • Budget not to exceed $2,000. Procter & Gamble Science Behind Symposium Program The Women’s Dermatologic Society is excited to partner with Procter & Gamble again to provide offer an opportunity to attend the Procter & Gamble Science Behind Symposium. PURPOSE OF AWARD Over the past 15 years, Procter & Gamble has hosted more than 200 prominent dermatologists in Cincinnati, OH for a two-day summit called The P&G Science Behind Symposium (a.k.a. Dermatology Technology Symposium). This gathering of top health professionals with leading industry scientists, researchers, and marketers serves to inspire collaboration, innovation, and scientific exchange. The meeting’s ultimate goal is to spur discussion about products with meaningful, measurable and noticeable benefits to consumers and patients. 2019 Academic Research Award The WDS Academic Research Award Program provides funding for residents, post-residency fellows, junior faculty and early-career dermatologists performing basic science or clinical research relevant to the field of dermatology. Awards in the amount of up to $10,000 each are awarded on a competitive basis. The 2019 Academic Research Award Application will open March 18, 2019, and will close July 26, 2019.

2020 International Travel Award The Women’s Dermatologic Society provides travel awards of up to $2,500 USD for Women Board Certified (or Board Eligible) dermatologists from outside the United States and Canada to attend the WDS Annual Meeting Luncheon and the American Academy of Dermatology Annual Meeting. The American Academy of Dermatology provides supplemental support for recipients of the WDS International Travel Award to attend the AAD Annual Meeting. This support consists of complimentary registration for the annual AAD meeting, one educational session, and an invitation to the AAD international scholarship dinner. The 2020 International Travel Award Application will open April 1, 2019, and will close June 28, 2019. This program is partially supported by the American Academy of Dermatology

L’Oreal Day of Discovery Program The WDS has partnered with L’Oreal USA to bring our members an exciting opportunity. Selected physicians will meet with the L’Oreal Research team of scientists and chemists to learn about both upstream innovations (molecules, delivery systems) as well as Applied and Advanced research to understand how current ingredients and molecules are used in current and near-term OTC vehicles.
