Broadway in Philadelphia is a step back into time. The gilded, gated doors close as the elevator operator punches the button for the second floor. Moments later, the pulleys and cable come to a stop, and the doors open on to a lobby and offices that seem frozen in time, some 30-odd years ago. To the casual observer, a professional makeover might be in order. But to a fan of early-‘60s pop or ‘70s soul music, the surroundings are resplendent in their untouched glory, a virtual shrine to two creative, indelible eras in recorded history. The home of Cameo-Parkway Records from 1956 to 1967, this building drew aspiring songwriters, from near and far, hoping to pitch their tunes to the likes of Chubby Checker, Bobby Rydell and the Orlons. Among those young hopefuls were poet/lyricist Kenneth Gamble and keyboardist extraordinaire Leon Huff, and while their early attempts to “storm the castle” were often thwarted, they ultimately ascended to become the preeminent writer/producers on the local scene, and the most important force in R&B/Soul music since the heyday of Motown Records. In 1972, they purchased the building for their own enterprise, Philadelphia International Records. As architects of “the Philly Sound”, Gamble & Huff crafted sophisticated funk classics for the O’Jays, Harold Melvin & the Blues, Teddy Pendergrass, the Intruders, Lou Rawls and others that ushered in the Disco Era, setting a standard for dance- friendly, yet lyrical songcraft, that remains unmatched.

The original Ebonys auditioned for Philadelphia International Records and was later signed to a recording contract. The Ebonys went on to release two albums, one of which reached the top of the pop charts. In 1995 Sony Records along with Collectable Records released a CD titled “ It’s Forever” in the United States and Japan. In 1996 Platinum Classic Records released the ‘Grove Me’ CD also featuring “It’s Forever”. WDAS Radio Station of Philadelphia recently released a CD titled ‘WDAS Classic Love Songs’ and once again the hit song “It’s Forever” was featured. Currently, these CD’s are being played on radio stations across the country and abroad. David Beasley, one of the former lead singers of the original Ebonys, was born and raised in Camden, NJ and has been making music all his life. In July of 1997 The Ebonys were reborn and included four incredible vocalists, David Beasley, William “Smoke” Howard, Nate Cephas, and Toni Calloway. A fifth vocalist, the late McKensey Crawford, joined The Ebonys as background singer to enhance their harmony. David retired from The Ebonys group in 2001 and McKensey Crawford became the lead 1st tenor and retired in Jan. 2012 and was replaced with veteran 1st tenor, Ken Chaney. Our female vocalist, Lorna Dixon retired in 2013 and Geneva “Neva” Wilkes became our only female vocalist. Nate Cephas retired in 2015 and Ray Keniebrew, our newest member singing 2nd Tenor.

    The Sweet Delights by Charlie Horner With contributions from Pamela Horner Sometimes the most rewarding part of preserv- ing the legacy of our music is the wonderful friendships we make along the way. As researchers and writers we must remain objective. Still, Pam & I have known Gery- lane and Eddie Edgehill for years. I wrote about Eddie Edgehill with the Valentines [2] and Del Knights [3] in past issues of Echoes of the Past. Sadly, Eddie passed in 2010. This article covers the musical career of Gerylane Edgehill and her group, the Sweet Delights. Gerylane Edgehill was born Gerylane Moore in Wilmington, NC. She moved with her family to North Philadelphia when she was eight years old. “I always sang in church from the time I was very little,” recalled Geri. “I sang in the choir.” In the early 1960’s Gerylane met former Valen- tines’ Eddie Edgehill. Eddie was singing with the Del Knights at the time, one of Philadelphia’s most under- rated vocal groups. Another member of the Del Knights, Warren Sherrill, was going with a girl next door to Gerylane, and brought Eddie over. In March of 1964, Gerylane and Eddie Edgehill were married. Eddie would continue his singing career with Terry Johnson’s Modern Flamingos group until 1967, when he decided to follow his friend Richard Barrett’s example and move into the songwriting, producing and managing end of the music business. Having discovered produced and/ or managed everyone from Frankie Lymon & the Teen- agers to the Chantels and Little Anthony & the Imperi- The Sweet Delights as they recorded “Baby Be Mine”.
