Poirier Kingswell Theological Seminary, Middletown, OH, USA Mark 5.24b-34 tells the story of Jesus healing a woman suffering from a flow of blood. The story has a number of features that make it more than just another account of a healing miracle. It is foremost a story about the woman’s faith (Jesus is unwitting to the miracle until it actually occurs),1 but it also informs the reader, in a not-so-subtle way, that the healing virtue that flowed from Jesus has certain dynamic properties not unlike those characterizing the egressive properties of ritual impurity. The story, as Mark has redactionally cast it, interrupts the narrative of Jesus bringing Jairus’s daughter back to life (vv. 21-24a, 35-43).2 Two questions arise: (1) What does the miraculous healing of the woman signify? and (2) Why * We wish to thank the following (listed alphabetically) for commenting on earlier drafts of this article: Robert N. However, because most elite schools were initially directed towards training for the Christian ministry, nearly all American colonial universities were off limits to Jews. So badly did Jews ache for the opportunity to get themselves into academia, that some actually converted to Christianity to gain acceptance.1 This began to change toward the end of the colonial period, when Benjamin Franklin introduced non-theological subjects to the university. In 1770, Brown University officially opened its doors to Jews, finally granting equal access to a higher education for American Jews.2 By the early 1920's Jewish representation at the leading American universities had grown remarkably. For example, Jews made up 22% of the incoming class at Harvard in 1922, while in 1909 they had been only 6%.3 This came at a time when there were only 3.5 millions Jews4 in a United States of 106.5 million people.5 This made the United States only about 3% Jewish, rendering Jews greatly over-represented in universities all over the country. However, in due course the momentum reversed. During the “Roaring 1920’s,” a trend towards quotas limiting Jewish students became prevalent. () When the Vaad Hakohol announced that elections will be held for addi- tional Rabbomim we made it very clear that these elections will be open, honest and transparent. As the Rebbe said very clearly, “This is not Russia.” What worked in Russia will not work here in a democratic and open society. This means anyone is free to recommend qualified candidates for the Beis Din. It means legitimate elections that offer the voters real choices, not “yes or no” on a single unopposed candidate. It means engaging objective outside monitors to supervise the entire election process so that no one should have any doubts regarding the elections outcome. It means involving netzigim from a range of local shuls to act as observers and make sure nothing underhanded takes place. To begin with, there was only a single candidate. This was the sort of practice the Rebbe was referring to as “This is not Russia!” Furthermore, the Vaad Hakohol at that time – with the signatures of Yaakov Herzog, Nochum Gross and Chanina Sperlin – wrote in their announcement of 9 Marcheshvon 5763 as follows: “...The Rebbe has instructed us that the appointment of Rabbonim should be through the participation of the entire Kehillah* by public mandate, therefore with the consent of Rabbi Avrohom Osdoba Shlita, we would like to inform you tht G-d willing elections will take place Sunday 21 of Marcheshvon 5763… “At this time you will have an opportunity to elect … Rabbi Yaakov Schwei, who currently is assisting the B”D in its many duties and is willing to serve as a full time Rov and Member of the B”D as necessary. -

Safe, Sane, and Attentive: Toward a Jewish Ethic of Sex and Public Health Rebecca Jane Epstein-Levi Oberlin, OH B.A., Oberlin College, 2008 M.A., University of Virginia, 2012 A Dissertation presented to the Graduate Faculty of the University of Virginia in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Religious Studies University of Virginia April 2017 2 © Rebecca Jane Epstein-Levi, 2017 Abstract Safe, Sane, and Attentive: Toward a Jewish Ethic of Sex and Public Health offers a new framework for a Jewish ethic of sex and public health that is derived from mishnaic ritual purity literature. Mishnaic texts characterize ritual impurity not as a moral stain, but as a troublesome-yet-mundane condition that is a predictable consequence of common forms of social interaction. While ritual impurity has potentially serious social and ritual consequences and its management and prevention should be taken seriously, the contraction of impurity is not an occasion for shame or disgrace, and the risk of contracting impurity does not warrant avoiding regular social interaction. The present study argues that sex is not a sui generis phenomenon; rather, it is species of social interaction, and that STIs should be understood, in turn, as predictable risks of certain forms of social interaction. This study thus argues that these parallel features of purity discourse are valuable resources, for both Jews and non-Jews, for thinking about the ethics of managing STIs, and it articulates a Jewish ethical framework that is textually grounded, socially responsible and sexually aware. It offers a religious and unapologetically normative approach to sexual ethics that is attentive to the empirical particularity of sex and sexual health as concrete phenomena and prioritizes the needs and experiences of sexual and gender minorities.
