1 1945 October 22-28 Navy Day 1945 (La Crosse Tribune, 1945 October 23, page 7) 2 Proclamations are often issued in observance of annual events or to recognize significant achievements by an individual or group of people. Navy Day in 1945 was both. Navy Day was established by the Navy League on October 27, 1922. The organization suggested October 27 as the annual day of observance to celebrate the United States Navy for two reasons: October 27 was the birthday of former President Theodore Roosevelt who was an advocate of a strong Navy to extend the power of the United States overseas and protect American interests October 27, 1775, was the anniversary of a Continental Congress report that called for the purchase of merchant ships to outfit as warships to create a navy1 In today's vernacular, one would also say that the navy was coming off a big win. The German and Japanese regimes were in the ashcan in large part because of the United States Navy. Past Navy Days in La Crosse included a dance at the Avalon ballroom and a mass swearing-in ceremony for new navy recruits. This year, 1945, the year of victory in World War II, offered much more. The star of Navy Day 1945 in La Crosse was LSM-104. LSM stands for "Landing Ship, Medium." It was one of the numerous fleets of amphibious vessels the navy used to deliver men, machines, and supplies to beaches. LSM-104 arrived in La Crosse on Monday, October 22.2 The ship had started out from Norfolk, Virginia, with two other ships of the same type. -

Combat Tours: Vietnam: CVW-16 (A-4) 1969, 1970, 1975, He commanded Attack Squadron 146, Carrier Air Wing Six USS Ticonderoga. during the 1991 Lebanon Crisis, the USS Caloosahatchee CVW-11 (A-7 Corsair) USS Kitty Hawk and the USS America (CV-66). VA-22, (A-7) 1975 USS Coral Sea Lebanon: CVW-6, (A-7, A-6, EA-6) USS Independence Following his tour as Chief of Staff for Commander U.S. Total of 220 combat missions. Sixth Fleet he was promoted to Rear Admiral. He then com- manded Carrier Striking Force Sixth Fleet deployed to the Aviation Commands: Mediterranean during the Bosnian Crisis. -

Poulsbo, Washington It is a distinct pleasure for me to be here this afternoon to introduce a distinguished panel to you. I think the papers, commen- taries, aad discussion will be stimulating and will be of interest to all of you. I' ve had the pleasure of a personal association with the Law of the Sea Institute since its inception in Rhode Island in 1966. Believe me, that year is etched in my memory because as a somewhat idealistic lieutenant commander I presented a paper that damn near got me fired. Several weeks ago I reviewed the proceedings of that session for two reasons, One, I wanted to see the rate of survivorship of the charter members. I'm happy to report that membership does aot endanger your health, as evidenced by the large number of old fogies around here. The second reason to review the proceedings of that first meeting was to see if there was any relevance to the organization. I was frankly surprised when I looked at those proceedings to see how raaay of the thoughts and discussion points raised and reported in the pro- ceedings found their way into emerging customary law and indeed into provisions of the 1982 Convention. I think it is safe to say that over the years the Law of the Sea Institute has been one of the focal points for the discussion, albeit informal but authorititative, of important law of the sea issues. -

These warships are primarily deployed to deter aggression and protect American strategic interests. Should deterrence fail, the carrier’s bombers and attack aircraft engage in vital operations to support other forces. The collection includes the 1940-designed Grumman TBM Avenger of World War II. Also on display is the Douglas A-1 Skyraider, a true workhorse of the 1950s and ‘60s, as well as the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk and Grumman A-6 Intruder, stalwarts of the Vietnam War. Originally built as the TBF by Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation, they were affectionately nicknamed “Turkeys” for their somewhat ungainly appearance. Bomber Torpedo In 1943 Grumman was tasked to build the F6F Hellcat fighter for the Navy. -

THE SUBMARINE REVIEW FIXED SONAR SYSTEMS THE HISTORY AND FUTURE OF THE UNDEWATER SILENT SENTINEL by LT John Howard, United States Navy Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California Undersea Warfare Department Executive Summary One of the most challenging aspects of Anti-Submarine War- fare (ASW) has been the detection and tracking of submerged contacts. One of the most successful means of achieving this goal was the Sound Surveillance System (SOSUS) developed by the United States Navy in the early 1950's. It was designed using breakthrough discoveries of the propagation paths of sound through water and intended to monitor the growing submarine threat of the Soviet Union. SOSUS provided cueing of transiting Soviet submarines to allow for optimal positioning of U.S. ASW forces for tracking and prosecution of these underwater threats. SOSUS took on an even greater national security role with the advent of submarine launched ballistic missiles, ensuring that U.S. forces were aware of these strategic liabilities in case hostilities were ever to erupt between the two superpowers. With the end of the Cold War, SOSUS has undergone a number of changes in its utilization, but is finding itself no less relevant as an asset against the growing number of modern quiet submarines proliferating around the world. Introduction For millennia, humans seeking to better defend themselves have set up observation posts along the ingress routes to their key strongholds. Libya Location The nation of Libya is located in North Africa and covers approximately one million seven hundred fifty square kilometers, which is slightly larger than the United State’s Alaska. It is one of the largest countries in Africa. Libya lies in the geographic coordinates 25°N and 17°E. It is bordered in the north by the Mediterranean Sea and by Niger and Chad in the south. Libya’s western border connects to Algeria and Tunisia, and connects to Egypt and Sudan in the east. Geography The highest point in Libya is the Bikku Bitti, also known as Bette Peak, which stands at seven thousand four hundred and thirty eight feet at its highest point. It is located in the Tibesti Mountains in southern Libya near the Chadian border. The Sahara, an immense North African desert, covers most of Libya. Much of the country’s land consists of barren, rock-strewn plains and sand sea, with flat to underlying plains, plateaus, and depressions. Two small areas of hills ascend in the northwest and northeast, and the Tibesti mountains rise near the southern border. There are no permanent rivers or streams in Libya. The coastline is sunken near the center by the Gulf of Sidra, where barren desert reaches the Mediterranean Sea. Libya is divided into three natural regions. The first and largest, to the east of the Gulf of Sidra, is Cyrenaica, which occupies the plateau of Jabal al Akhdar. The majority of the area of Cyrenaica is covered with sand dunes, especially along the border with Egypt. -

Romanov News Новости Романовых By Ludmila & Paul Kulikovsky №138 September 2019 New Bust to Emperor Alexander III at St. Nicholas Church in Polyarny City A monument to Emperor Alexander III was solemnly opened and consecrated in Polyarny city On the occasion of the 120th anniversary of Polyarny, a solemn opening ceremony of the bust of Emperor Alexander III took place on the territory of St. Nicholas Church. Polyarny is a city in the Murmansk region, located on the shores of the Catherine’s harbour of the Kola Bay of the Barents Sea, about 30 km from Murmansk. The city is home to the Northern Fleet and as such is a closed city. The port was laid down in the summer of 1899 and named Alexandrovsk in honour of Emperor Alexander III. In 1931 it was renamed Polyarny., Parishioners of the church of St. Nicholas the Miracle Worker and Rector Archpriest Sergei Mishchenko, initiated and sponsored the bronze bust of the great Russian Emperor Alexander III. The monument was made with donations from parishioners and in February 2019 was delivered from the workshop of Simferopol to Polyarny. The opening and consecration ceremony was conducted by Bishop Tarasiy of the North Sea and Umba. The St. Nicholas Church, with the bust of Emperor Alexander III standing under the bell tower. Stories from Crimea In 2019, there were two extraordinaire reasons to visit Crimea and Yalta in particular - the 100 years anniversary of several members of the Imperial Romanov family, including Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna, leaving Russia from Yalta - and 125 years since the repose of Emperor Alexander III in Livadia.
