Iranian Azerbaijanis
Iranian Azerbaijanis 1. Introduction The Azerbaijani population of Iran is the largest linguistic minority group in Iran, comprising anywhere from 25-35% of the total population of Iran. They reside primarily in North and Northwest Iran, in the provinces of East Azerbaijan, West Azerbaijan and Ardabil.1 Azerbaijanis speak a dialect of Turkic, closely related to Azerbaijani Turkic spoken in the Republic of Azerbaijan. Despite the fact that Iranian Azerbaijanis have shared a long history with Persians, Azerbaijanis face cultural, linguistic and economic discrimination along with other minorities in Iran. The roots of racism in Iran began in 1925, when the newly appointed king of Iran, Reza Shah, implemented a policy of cultural and linguistic homogeneity and assimilation for all nations of Iran. The Persian language and culture became dominant and those who spoke minority languages were barred from education and media in their native tongues. Members of ethnic and linguistic minorities in Iran were forced to feel ashamed of their mother tongues and culture, and from childhood, faced assaults in state-run media. Azerbaijanis in particular have been compared to donkeys and cockroaches. This policy of cultural hegemony continued after the Islamic Revolution of 1979, despite the Islamic Republic’s constitutional guarantees for linguistic and cultural rights. Currently, the Azerbaijani languages is banned in schools; Azerbaijani language journals and journals calling for the proliferation of Azerbaijani linguistic and cultural rights are shut -

Strasbourg, 3 September 2003 MIN-LANG/PR (2003) 7 EUROPEAN CHARTER FOR REGIONAL OR MINORITY LANGUAGES Initial Periodical Report presented to the Secretary General of the Council of Europe in accordance with Article 15 of the Charter ARMENIA The First Report of the Republic of Armenia According to Paragraph 1 of Article 15 of European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages June 2003, Yerevan 2 INTRODUCTION The Republic of Armenia signed the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages on May 11, 2001. In respect of Armenia the Charter has come into force since May 1, 2002. The RA introduces the following report according to Paragraph 1 of Article 15 of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages. This report has been elaborated and developed by the State Language Board at the Ministry of Education and Science based on the information submitted by the relevant ministries NGOs and administrative offices, taking into consideration the remarks and suggestions made by them and all parties interested, while discussing the following report. PART I Historical Outline Being one of the oldest countries in the world, for the first time in its new history Armenia regained its independence on May 28, 1918. The first Republic existed till November 29, 1920, when Armenia after forced sovetalization joined the Soviet Union, becoming on of the 15 republics. As a result of referendum the Republic of Armenia revived its independence on September 21, 1991. Armenia covers an area of 29,8 thousand km2, the population is nearly 32000001. Armenia borders on Iran, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Turkey. -

Volume: 8 Issue: 2 Year: 2011 A Brief Overview on Karabakh History from Past to Today Ercan Karakoç Abstract After initiation of the glasnost (openness) and perestroika (restructuring) policies in the USSR by Mikhail Gorbachev, the Soviet Union started to crumble, and old, forgotten, suppressed problems especially regarding territorial claims between Azerbaijanis and Armenians reemerged. Although Mountainous (Nagorno) Karabakh is officially part of Azerbaijan Republic, after fierce and bloody clashes between Armenians and Azerbaijanis, the entire Nagorno Karabakh region and seven additional surrounding districts of Lachin, Kelbajar, Agdam, Jabrail, Fizuli, Khubadly and Zengilan, it means over 20 per cent of Azerbaijan, were occupied by Armenians, and because of serious war situations, many Azerbaijanis living in these areas had to migrate from their homeland to Azerbaijan and they have been living under miserable conditions since the early 1990s. 2018 Non-State Nations in International Relations: The Kurdish Question Revisited RESEARCH MASTERS WITH TRAINING – THESIS SUBMISSION JESS WIKNER 1 Statement of Declaration: I declare that this thesis is my own account of my research and contains as its main content work which has not previously been submitted for a degree at any tertiary education institution. 2 Abstract This thesis explores the fundamental research puzzle of why non-state nations struggle to achieve independent sovereign statehood through secession. It explores why non-state nations like the Kurds desire sovereign statehood, and why they fail to achieve it. This thesis argues two main points. Firstly, non-state nations such as the Kurds seek sovereign statehood because of two main reasons: the essence of nationhood and national self-determination is sovereign statehood; and that non-state nations are usually treated unfairly and unjustly by their host state and thus develop a strong moral case for secession and sovereign statehood. Secondly, non-state nations like the Kurds fail to achieve sovereign statehood mainly because of key endogenous and exogenous factors. The endogenous factors comprise internal divisions which result in failure to achieve a unified secessionist challenge, due to differences in factions which result in divergent objectives and perspectives, and the high chances of regime co-optation of dissident factions. Exogenous factors include the international normative regime which is unsupportive of secession, hence non-state nations like the Kurds do not receive support from the UN and other global bodies in their quest for sovereign statehood; and that non-state nations also seldom receive the backing from Major Powers, both democratic and non-democratic, in their efforts to secede from their host state and set up their own sovereign state. -

MUSİQİ DÜNYASI ____________________________________________________3 (76), 2018 Afet HASANOVA AZERBAIJANI CULTURE OF THE MIDDLE AGES IN THE CONTEXT OF ARTISTIC TRADITIONS OF THE MIDDLE EAST Abstract The article studies Azerbaijani cultural traditions in the context of common cultural values of the East. The study focuses on the historical aspects of the problem. Being analyzed from the cultural aspect of view, the subject brings forward the geographical, historical, ethnographic and psychological factors. In particular, the article pays attention to key processes taking place in the cultural history of the East since the Middle Ages forward. Manifestations of these processes in the Azerbaijani culture of are studied. Cultural partnership factors are disclosed. The common features observed in Azerbaijani cultural traditions are assessed based on both the historical and modern scientific criteria. The article provides scientific analysis of the formation of the artistic culture. Turkish ethno-cultural factor is drawn forward in the bilateral cultural processes. The paper investigates the synthesis of artistic styles in architecture. It justifies thoughts about the decorative-applied art in the Eastern art culture. The value of the Oriental traditions in the world heritage have been explained. Characteristic features of traditional music culture have been studied. In general, based on analysis of the sources related to the subject it may be concluded that Azerbaijani culture is the product of both the local and universal and regional contexts. -

The authors of the monograph provide a critical analysis of both the arguments and terms put forward primarily by Soviet Oriental school, and those introduced in modern nationalistic writings, which misrepresent the background and cultural heritage of Nezami. Outright forgeries, including those about an alleged Turkish Divan by Nezami Ganjavi and falsified verses first published in Azerbaijan SSR, which have found their way into Persian publications, are also in the focus of the authors‖ attention. An important contribution of the book is that it highlights three rare and previously neglected historical sources with regards to the population of Arran and Azerbaijan, which provide information on the social conditions and ethnography of the urban Iranian Muslim population of the area and are indispensable for serious study of the Persian literature and Iranian culture of the period. The Poetics of Commitment in Modern Persian: A Case of Three Revolutionary Poets in Iran by Samad Josef Alavi A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Near Eastern Studies in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in Charge: Professor Shahwali Ahmadi, Chair Professor Muhammad Siddiq Professor Robert Kaufman Fall 2013 Abstract The Poetics of Commitment in Modern Persian: A Case of Three Revolutionary Poets in Iran by Samad Josef Alavi Doctor of Philosophy in Near Eastern Studies University of California, Berkeley Professor Shahwali Ahmadi, Chair Modern Persian literary histories generally characterize the decades leading up to the Iranian Revolution of 1979 as a single episode of accumulating political anxieties in Persian poetics, as in other areas of cultural production. According to the dominant literary-historical narrative, calls for “committed poetry” (she‘r-e mota‘ahhed) grew louder over the course of the radical 1970s, crescendoed with the monarch’s ouster, and then faded shortly thereafter as the consolidation of the Islamic Republic shattered any hopes among the once-influential Iranian Left for a secular, socio-economically equitable political order. Such a narrative has proven useful for locating general trends in poetic discourses of the last five decades, but it does not account for the complex and often divergent ways in which poets and critics have reconciled their political and aesthetic commitments. This dissertation begins with the historical assumption that in Iran a question of how poetry must serve society and vice versa did in fact acquire a heightened sense of urgency sometime during the ideologically-charged years surrounding the revolution.
