INTRODUCTION By the end of February 632 and at the age of sixty-three, the Prophet Muhammad believed that his days on earth were coming to an end.2 He announced to his followers that he would lead the hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca, himself that year.3 On March 3, the Prophet delivered his farewell sermon near Mount Arafat.4 Among the limited number of topics he chose to include in his last public speech, he encouraged his followers to deal justly with one another and treat women well. 5 In the modem era, the rights of women under Islamic law have come under heightened scrutiny. Some commentators find the Prophet's farewell speech to be inconsistent with the way women are treated in some areas of the Muslim world. In Saudi Arabia, for example, women may neither drive nor vote. -

On the Qur'anic Accusation of Scriptural Falsification (tahrîf) and Christian Anti-Jewish Polemic GABRIEL SAID REYNOLDS UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME According to the fully articulated salvation history of Islam, Moses and Jesus (like all prophets) were Muslims. Moses received an Islamic scripture, the Torah {tawrät), as did Jesus, the Gospel (injU). Their communities, however, suppressed their religion and altered their scriptures. Accordingly, a canonical h^dlth has the Prophet Muhammad declare: O community of Muslims, how is it that you seek wisdom from the People of the Book? Your book, brought down upon His Prophet—blessings and peace of God upon him—is the latest report about God. You read a Book that has not been distorted, but the People of the Book, as God related to you, exchanged that which God wrote [for something else], changing the book with their hands. ' This hcidïth refiects the idea found frequently among Muslim scholars, usually described with the term tahrîf, that the Bible has been literally altered. The same idea lies behind Yâqût's (d. 626/1229) attribution of a quotation on Jerusalem to a Jewish convert to Islam from Banü Qurayza "who possessed a copy of the uncorrupted Torah." •^ Muslim scholars also accuse Jews and Christians of misinterpreting the Bible by hiding, ignoring, or misreading it, and on occasion they describe such misinterpretation as tahrîf as well. Accordingly, in scholarly treatments of the subject a comparison is sometimes made between tahrîf al-nass, alteration of the text of scripture, and tahrîf al-ma'anî, misinterpre- tation of scripture. Yet Muslim scholars who accuse Jews and Christians of misinterpreta- tion do not mean to imply thereby that the Bible has not been altered. -

The ruler, therefore, needs persons to help him in the matters concerned with 'the sword,' 'the pen,' and finances; and among them the pen ranks high."1 It may have been thought to rank even higher than the sword and finances, for, according to Muslim tradition, the pen was the first object God created.2 Of its power and creativeness in Islamic culture there can be no doubt, and those who wielded the pen enjoyed great esteem. Poets and literati lent their talents to the business of government and, according to Ibn al-Sayrafl, achieved "with the pen what the sword and the lance over a long period of years had been unable to produce."3 Unfortunately, the use of the pen as an instrument of Muslim policy and the preservation of the products of the pen, namely offi- cial documents, have received too little attention so far. Chapter 1 Migration History of the Afro-Eurasian Transition Zone, c. 300–1500: An Introduction (with a Chronological Table of Selected Events of Political and Migration History) Johannes Preiser-Kapeller, Lucian Reinfandt and Yannis Stouraitis When the process of compilation of this volume started in 2014, migration was without doubt already a “hot” topic. Yet, it were only the events of 2015,1 which put migration on top of the discussion about the Euro and the economic crisis in the agenda of politicians, the wider public and the media. In this heated debate, the events of past migrations have been employed in a biased manner as arguments against a new “Völkerwanderung” destined to disintegrate Eu- rope as it did with the (Western) Roman Empire. Thus, the present volume could be seen, among other things, also as an effort to provide a corrective to such oversimplifying recourses to the ancient and medieval period.2 It should be noted, however, that it was planned and drafted before the events. The volume emerged from a series of papers given at the European Social Science History Conference in Vienna in April 2014 in two sessions on “Early Medieval Migrations” organized by Professors Dirk Hoerder and Johannes Koder. Their aim was to integrate the migration history of the medieval period into the wider discourse of migration studies and to include recent research. The three editors have added contributions by specialists for other periods and regions in order to cover as wide an area and a spectrum of forms of migration as possible. Still, it was not possible to cover all regions, periods and migra- tion movements with the same weight; as one of the anonymous reviewers properly pointed out, the “work’s centre of gravity is (…) between the Eastern Mediterranean region and the Tigris/Euphrates”, with Africa not included in a similar way as Asia or Europe. -

The Oneiric Veil in Contemporary Australian Art hilm (Dream) Kelly Devrome Bachelor of Visual Art (Fine Art) Diploma of Education (Secondary) Master of Arts (Research) This exegesis is submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy University of Ballarat P.O Box 663 University Drive, Mount Helen Ballarat, Victoria 3353 Australia Submitted, June 2011 The Oneiric Veil in Contemporary Australian Art researches the use of the veil in modernist art and its generative capacity to visually evoke an oneiric space. The oneiric veil is a lens through which current conceptual approaches and practices in contemporary visual art can be understood. More precisely, the oneiric veil delineates an intermediary space present in current visual culture. Therefore, the research surveys the veil sign and applications of it employed by artists from an extended historical period to demonstrate connections that link the veil to the oneiric through traditional practice and theoretical concerns. As a painter and drawer, I use the modernist veil, including the grid and shadow, to evoke a field and convey a multiplicity of meaning pertaining to site-specificity. The veil functions to create a filtered and intermediary effect characteristic of the physicality of a site-specific space. I examine the modernist veil with regard to the veiling applications used in painting to produce a metaphysical space whereby the formal uses of binary oppositions have been explicitly fore-grounded. To demonstrate how the veil produces multiplicity, I examine how the modernist veil generates the presence of an oneiric space and links to poststructuralist theory. This conceptual underpinning of the oneiric, and its link to the modernist framework, will contribute a new interpretive frame to the visual space of contemporary art today. -

Please take the time to answer the following question: Few months back I was going to my parents house for delivery of my first child. My mother wanted me to wear all the Gold jewellery and come. I had some at home and the remaining in the Banks locker. I asked my husband to get the remaining jewellery from the locker but he didn't take me to the bank nor got it. He kept saying he will not. As per him it didn't make sense for me to take all my jewellery to my home for delivery. I told him as it belonged to me I want it but he was not listening to me.. I started crying so my mother spoke to my husband in a harsh and rude (her tone was high) way as she was angry cos I was pregnant and my husband made me cry. she asked him to get it that day only it doesn't matter.. My husband was upset and angry as he thought my mother was accusing him that he has taken my jewellery and misused that's why she wanted to see the gold to cross check if it's there or not. My mother did speak to him in angry Tone but she didn't accuse him directly. My husband still thinks that my mother accused him of taking my jewellery, while I tell him that It's also his mistake as he didn't listen to me when I was pleading him to get the jewellery from bank.
