1 2 THE NATIONAL CHRISTIAN COUNCIL OF SRI LANKA ANNUAL REPORT 2012-13 An ecumenical pilgrimage… with the God of life 3 4 An Ecumenical Pilgrimage ...with the God of Life We believe in a living God, a God who lives and enables all living beings to exist, a God who is the source of life, a God who assures fullness of life and bestows on us the possibility of eternal life. We believe in a God who creates and sustains life, a God who affirms life. Human life therefore is sacred, because human life came into being through the very breath of God, which indicates the ultimate possibility of a closer relationship between God and humans. In the life and ministry of Jesus we find that death is defeated on the cross along with all agents of death. Death is the denial of life. The defeat of death is the affirmation of life, which is assured, experienced and made possible through the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. The proclamation of the risen Lord, is actually a proclamation that death is defeated, the agents of death overcome, and that eternal life and abundant life is a possibility for every human being. This is clearly summed up in the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, ... I came that they may have life and have it abundantly” (Jn 10:10) and “I give them eternal life, and they will never perish...” (Jn 10:28). The final vision of the Reign of God is portrayed in the image of the river of life and the tree of life (Rev.

According to the Disaster Management Centre 1 (DMC), 1,246,545 people from 333,383 families have been affected by the bad weather conditions. Women and children are amongst the worst affected. Nearly 273,995 people had sought shelter in 534 temporary camps (schools, churches and public buildings), 225 of them in Batticaloa district, set up by the government. Once the water receded, most of the families returned to their original places but find it difficult to rehabilitate due to major losses to property and livelihoods. Several families continue to live with host families, as their houses have been destroyed or are not fit to live in. As on 25 February the GoSL estimated that the floods damaged more than 95 percent of rice paddys in Batticaloa. Farmers whose crops have been damaged or destroyed may not have sufficient resources to purchase seeds for the upcoming yala 2 planting season, typically beginning in mid-March or April. For the displaced farmers who had accrued debt in order to purchase seeds for the current season, livelihoods degradation is a serious concern.

  • Under the Giant's Tank
UNDER THE GIANT’S TANK VILLAGE, CASTE, AND CATHOLICISM IN POSTWAR SRI LANKA Dominic Esler A thesis submitted to the Department of Anthropology, University College London, for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. December 2019. 2 I, Dominic Esler, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 3 4 ABSTRACT This thesis is an investigation of the relationship between the village, caste, and Catholicism in northern Sri Lanka. Drawing on almost two years of ethnographic fieldwork in Mannar District, as well as subsequent archival research, it provides a detailed analysis not only of the postwar context but also of prewar history, with a particular focus on the nineteenth century. In this thesis, I analyse three overlapping topics. First, I problematise ‘village’ through an examination of ‘cultural’ and ‘state’ village concepts, before arguing that within the complex social diversity of the village of Marudankandal there is a numerically dominant Tamil caste group, the Kadaiyars, whose prominence is reflected both rhetorically and through the control of institutions such as the Catholic village church. From this, I turn to two central dimensions of local caste praxis. First, I offer a historical explanation for the regional prevalence of village churches controlled by single castes, which remains a key characteristic of local Catholicism today. Second, I argue that despite the lessening of certain kinds of hierarchical caste relationships in recent decades, caste identities continue to be mobilised and expressed through regional communities, some of which maintain caste associations.
