A special welcome to all PhD students and their supervisors as this year’s theme is ‘Successful supervision – a two‐ way process’. Good supervision is essential for a successful degree programme. It is our belief that a positive and productive collaboration between supervisor and PhD student is one of the most important aspects of research education. As a pioneer in research education Health has more than 30 years of experience, and central to the consistent quality of the education offered here at Health are our supervisors. These are researchers employed at Health or Aarhus University Hospital recognized internationally for their results and academic knowledge. Similarly, the importance of dedicated and ambitious PhD students prepared to take the initiative in the collaboration can not be underestimated. To speak on ‘Successful supervision – a two‐way process’ we have invited Professor Emeritus Gunnar Handal from Oslo University and Associate Professor Gitte Wichmann from the Centre for Teaching Development and Digital Media here at Aarhus University. Gunnar Handal is behind several publications on supervision in research education as is Gitte Wichmann, who is also a former PhD study counsellor at Health. Moderator will be Professor Berit Eika, vice‐dean of education at Health. Skou lecturer will be the esteemed Professor Sir Andrew McMichael, an expert on the immune system response to viruses such as HIV, and Director of the Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine at Oxford University. As a PhD in immunology from 1974 and a knight from 2008 for his contribution to medical science, he has been invited to speak of supervision, describing also his own career. As is evident from the abstracts presented in this programme book the Graduate School of Health, Aarhus University provides a vibrant scientific environment ready to meet new challenges and offering many opportunities. The PhD projects are an important part of the research activities at Health, and we hereby acknowledge the contribution of the PhD students to the high quality research done here. Last but not least, we warmly thank all those who have taken the time to participate and help make this PhD Day a leading event. He first showed that virus specific CD8 T cells were HLA restricted and, later, Alain Townsend in his group demonstrated that influenza virus derived peptides were presented to T cells by MHC class I molecules. In recent years he has studied the T cell response to both influenza virus and HIV, with a particular interest in HIV escape from T cell recognition during acute infection. He has also focussed on HIV vaccines and pandemic influenza. His group has also been involved in developing novel methods for measuring T cell responses, such as HLA tetramer staining. He is Director of the Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine in Oxford University and founded the Medical Research Council Human Immunology Unit. He was knighted in 2008 for services to medical sciences and is a Fellow of both the Royal Society and the Academy of Medical Sciences. Professor Sir Andrew McMichael FRS, FAcMedSci, Director, Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine The John Radcliffe Hospital Headington Oxford OX3 9DS Tel: 01865 222336 Email: [email protected] Aarhus Graduate School of Health Sciences Aarhus Faculty of Health Sciences is one of the four main academic areas at Aarhus University and comprises a number of pre-clinical departments within biomedicine and public health, a department of odontology, and a department of clinical medicine located at the Aarhus University Hospital – a collaboration between the Faculty of Health Sciences and the health care region of central Denmark. The Aarhus Graduate School of Health Sciences was established in 1996, and was based on a tradition of providing quality postgraduate courses started in the 1970s. The Aarhus Graduate School of Health Sciences is headed by the Vice-dean of Talent Development in close collaboration with the PhD committee and the graduate programme leaders. The school has about 600 PhD students shared between the 12 graduate programmes and 100 research year students. Research training at both pre- and postgraduate level at the Faculty falls under the Aarhus Graduate School of Health Sciences – a multidisciplinary graduate school with long-standing traditions for recruiting students from the entire health science area. The graduate school aims to give the individual students broad knowledge of scientific theories, methodologies and tools required for health science research, and to develop their ability to independently address scientific issues. Across departmental boundaries 12 graduate programmes help ensure that all PhD students at the faculty are part of a relevant and challenging environment: Membrane Transporters and Receptors, Molecular Metabolism and Endocrinology, Public Health, Haematology, Inflammation and Infection, Cardiovascular, Laboratory Medicine, Neuroscience, Oncology, Translational Molecular Medicine, Odontology, Orthopaedics and Rheumatology, and Clinical Medicine. A unified approach at graduate school level ensures a consistent level of quality of the PhD education, while thematic and cross-disciplinary graduate programmes guarantees the availability of cross-disciplinary resources. The graduate school offers three-year PhD programmes as well as four-year and five-year integrated MD/PhD programmes.     GLOBAL RESEARCH TRAINING PROGRAMME PARTICIPANTS 2018 ‐ 2019 Deepti Adlakha Dr Deepti Adlakha is a Lecturer at the School of Natural and Built Environment and an affiliate member at the Centre for Excellence in Public Health‐Northern Ireland, Queens University‐Belfast. She has a background in architecture and urban design and completed her PhD from the Brown School, Prevention Research Centre, Washington University in St. Louis, United States. Deepti’s teaching and research focuses on pathways between urbanization and health and she is passionate about promoting healthy, livable cities. Her research focuses on generating, translating and scaling up evidence for reducing environmental health and social disparities, particularly factors affecting prevention, control and mitigation of chronic and acute non‐communicable diseases in populations. Her interests lie in understanding relationships between the built environment and health; documenting and improving geospatial health disparities; and using and improving measures to quantify obesity‐related behaviors (physical activity, diet) and relevant exposures (social and built environment) using GIS, accelerometry, GPS, geostatistical approaches, and other new technologies. Louise Atkinson Louise is a newly appointed Lecturer of Parasitology in the School of Biological Sciences/Institute of Global Food Security, QUB. She has completed both her undergraduate degree (BSc Biological Sciences) and PhD (Molecular Parasitology) at QUB, and spent her Postdoctoral Research career (2010‐18) working on parasitic nematode biology and drug target discovery in the QUB Parasitology Research Group. Her research hinges on the identification, validation, and development of novel approaches for the diagnosis and treatment of parasitic worms (nematodes) which inflict debilitating Neglected Tropical Disease (NTDs) in >1 billion people globally.

    Mapping Environmental Humanities Education in the Nordic Countries

    MAPPING ENVIRONMENTAL HUMANITIES EDUCATION IN THE NORDIC COUNTRIES Bringing Research in Green Humanities into Teaching (BRIGHT) network A network of 1 2 Why this report? The Environmental Humanities, an interdisciplinary field of scholarly inquiry which examines the junction of humans and nature through humanistic research approaches, has emerged as a major element in environmental-themed research in the Nordic Countries. Environmental Humanities (EnvHum) encompasses work done in environmental history, ecocriticism, environmental literature studies, posthuman studies, animal studies, environmental philosophy, and more. These are joined together in their common quest to understand the relationship between humans and the non-human world and the shaping of that relationship by culture, action, and thought. Our age is facing imminent environmental threats, including global climate change, escalating biodiversity loss, rapid natural resource extraction, and unjust distribution of environmental damage and pollution. EnvHum asks how we understand what it means to be human in these challenging times as well as how humanities can contribute to our understanding of the challenges. The Bringing Research in Green Humanities into Teaching (BRIGHT) network was established to build capacity in EnvHum humanities in the Nordic and Baltic countries by collaboratively exploring methods of integrating Environmental Humanities research into first (Bachelors) and second (Masters) level university teaching and building new cooperative regional teaching programs in environmental. BRIGHT was founded in 2018 as a Nordplus-funded network coordinated by Professor Dolly Jørgensen, University of Stavanger. Because environmental issues are a priority contemporary concern, we need green humanities research to be coupled to teaching. The network will create synergies and connections between the dispersed environmental humanities groups across the region and strengthen the integration of environmental humanities research into Nordic education.

Hun har kontor i Skejby Centeret og vil hjælpe med at skabe et godt hjem for dig. Hun kan støtte, vejlede og rådgive dig. Jane kan også hjælpe med at planlægge aktiviteter, som styrker dit netværk og dine sociale, faglige og personlige kompetencer.     UNIVERSITY OF AARHUS GRADUATE SCHOOL OF HEALTH SCIENCES PhD Day 15 January 2010 2 Welcome It is our pleasure to welcome students, faculty, and guests to the PhD Day 2010. We warmly thank all those who have taken the time to participate and help make the PhD Day a leading event in the training of our graduate students. The world of science is by nature global and to go international is a key ambition of the PhD programme in Denmark. Aarhus Graduate School of Health Sciences acknowledges that internationalisation is a very important aspect of science, not least for the individual PhD student. One way to support internationalisation is by networking. The theme of the PhD Day 2010 is thus INTERNATIONAL NETWORKING. Nine PhD students coming from USA, England, Sweden, Switzerland, and France will spend a day with PhD students from Aarhus. They were invited by the respective Graduate Programmes and we trust that this day of science related as well as social activities will lead to new contacts, further networking and new collaborations across borders. As is evident from the abstracts presented in this programme book the Aarhus Graduate School of Health Sciences provides a vibrant scientific environment ready to meet new challenges and offering many opportunities. The PhD students are central to research and research environments and the Organizing Committee is satisfied that this book shows the commitment and high quality research done at our Faculty. The Organizing Committee and the Faculty of Health Sciences are confident that the PhD Day 2010 will be a success and we cordially welcome all participants.

Forord Dette bind er skrevet af Mikkel Runge Olesen samt Sanne Aagaard Jensen og Jakob Linnet Schmidt. Olesen har skrevet fremstillingen ”Pest eller kolera. En analyse af beslutningsprocessen bag det danske militære engagement i Koso- vo 1998-1999”. Jensen og Schmidt har skrevet ”Med hele vejen. En analyse af beslutningsprocessen bag det danske militære engage- ment i Afghanistan i 2001”. Forskerne har haft uhindret adgang til relevant kildemateriale beroende i blandt andet Udenrigsministeriets, Statsministeriets, Forsvarsministeriets og Værnsfælles Forsvarskommandos arkiver. Desuden har forskerne indsamlet og anvendt et omfattende kil- demateriale af ikke-statslig proveniens, herunder har forskerne anvendt materiale fra privatarkiver og foretaget interviews med politikere og embedsmænd. For en oversigt over fremstillingernes materialegrundlag henvises til de enkelte analyser. Undersøgelserne udgør en del af grundlaget for udredningen Hvor- for gik Danmark i krig?
