River Elbe River Engineering and Sediment Management Concept Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) and Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSA) River Elbe River Engineering and Sediment Management Concept Review of sediment management strategy in the context of other European estuaries from a morphological perspective Report R.1805 May 2011 River Elbe River Engineering and Sediment Management Concept Review of sediment management strategy in the context of other European estuaries from a morphological perspective Summary The purpose of the current project is for six international experts to analyse and evaluate the proposed River Engineering and Sediment Management Concept (RESMC) for the River Elbe, particularly with respect to the individual groups of measures proposed and the likelihood for success, taking account of compatibility with the objective of sustainable development on the tidal Elbe. Peter whitehead of ABP Marine Environmental Research Ltd (ABPmer) in the UK has been commissioned to: "evaluate the RESMC in view of sediment management strategies in other European estuaries from a morphological perspective”. During the last decade considerable change has occurred in the siltation patterns of the River Elbe. This has generally required more maintenance dredging to take place in the channels near to the mouth and particularly in the Port of Hamburg area with less between these two areas. In the port area the maintenance dredge commitment has increased from around 2 million m3 in 2000 to over 8 million m3 in 2004/5. This additional material from down estuary mixes with the contaminated sediments from up-river, creating a larger volume of material with a significant contaminant content to be managed at considerable additional cost. This has led to increased practical problems in maintaining navigation whilst needing to comply with European nature conservation and water quality legislation. Discussions with the Lander of Hamburg, Lower Saxony and Schleswig Holstein, and agreement between the Hamburg Port Authority and the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSA) who are responsible for maintaining navigation of the Elbe Waterway, led to the development of the RESMC, published in 2008 (HPA & WSD-N (2008). The concept is based on a holistic understanding of the estuary dynamics as whole and promotes measures for sustainable management of the tidal Elbe and Port of Hamburg for the future. The main goals of the RESMC strategy are to reduce the maintenance dredging, reduce HW levels in the estuary thus reducing flood risk, increasing Low Water (LW) levels thus aiding navigation, and reducing contamination within the estuary in a sustainable manner whilst complying with national and international legislation. This report provides an overview of the understanding of the historical development of the River Elbe, before the start of the implementation of the RESMC measures, and provides a discussion of the influence of various 'modifications’ on the morphology, processes and sedimentary regime of the estuary. This is followed by a review of the various measures proposed in the RESMC, indicating their likely effectiveness in the ‘light' of the previous historical understanding and the current processes at work in the estuary. In order to satisfy the project scope, the RESMC has been evaluated against various sediment management strategies and practices that have been implemented across a range of European estuaries, which include Southampton Water, Medina, Humber and Mersey Estuaries in the UK and the Western Scheldt. Within container transhipment, it is on the third rank among European ports beyond the Dutch port of Rotterdam, and the Belgium port of Antwerp. Hamburg belonged to the first European ports that started handling containers at the end of the 1960s. In 1990, the port handled 1.696 mil. TEUs, in 2017, it was already 8.815 mil. TEUs. The port of Hamburg has four container terminals, two of which are automated or semi- automated terminals. The terminals differ in technical equipment, transhipment technology, handling systems. Key words: port of Hamburg, container terminals, handling systems, automated terminals INTRODUCTION The port of Hamburg is one of the oldest European ports which began transhipping containers in the late 1960s. The first container ship, the American Lancer, entered the port of Hamburg on 31 May 1968. This ship had already had a cellular structure of cargo hold. Between 1968 and 2017, a total of 186 million of standardized containers were handled in the port. Nowadays, Hamburg is the third largest European seaport in the transhipment of containers after the port of Rotterdam and the port of Antwerp. In 2017, 8.815 million TEUs were handled in the port that represents a decrease of 1.03% compared to 2016. Among the twenty world container ports, Hamburg was nineteenth in the transhipment of containers.

    CHAPTER SEVENTEEN History of the German Language 1 Indo-European and Germanic Background Indo-European Background It has already been mentioned in this course that German and English are related languages. Two languages can be related to each other in much the same way that two people can be related to each other. If two people share a common ancestor, say their mother or their great-grandfather, then they are genetically related. Similarly, German and English are genetically related because they share a common ancestor, a language which was spoken in what is now northern Germany sometime before the Angles and the Saxons migrated to England. We do not have written records of this language, unfortunately, but we have a good idea of what it must have looked and sounded like. We have arrived at our conclusions as to what it looked and sounded like by comparing the sounds of words and morphemes in earlier written stages of English and German (and Dutch) and in modern-day English and German dialects. As a result of the comparisons we are able to reconstruct what the original language, called a proto-language, must have been like. This particular proto-language is usually referred to as Proto-West Germanic. The method of reconstruction based on comparison is called the comparative method. If faced with two languages the comparative method can tell us one of three things: 1) the two languages are related in that both are descended from a common ancestor, e.g. German and English, 2) the two are related in that one is the ancestor of the other, e.g.

Please describe the present situation and development over the last five to ten years in relation to (max. 1,000 words): Within the scope of implementing “Directive 2002/49/EC of the European Parliament and the Council of 25 June 2002, relating to the assessment and management of environmental noise”, the proportion of Hamburg’s population subjected to noise emanations from road, railway and air traffic sources as well as industrial, commercial and port facilities has been determined in terms of the noise indicators L den, for noise levels during the day, evening and night, and L night, for noise levels at night. The assessment was calculated on the basis of national provisional computation methods; namely, the “Provisional computation method for environmental noise on roads – VBUS”, the “Provisional computation method for environmental noise on railways – VBUSch”, the “Provisional computation method for environmental noise at airports – VBUF”, the “Provisional computation method for environmental noise from industry and commercial facilities – VBUI”, and the “Provisional computation method for determining the number of individuals exposed to environmental noise – VBEB”. In terms of the industrial, commercial and port sector, in addition to plants located in the port area, only those industrial or commercial zones with one or more plants as per Appendix 1 of the “European Council Directive 96/61/EC of 24 September 1996 concerning integrated pollution prevention and control” are afforded consideration.
