  • Sketch Idea Generator
Sketch Idea Generator This is a guide you can use to generate sketch ideas. Keep in mind that out of 10 ideas in comedy, maybe 1 is going to turn out great. But, using these methods you can pump out ideas very quickly and get to that 1 really great idea faster. Enjoy! Adjective/ Profession/ Location Mis/Matching This one is all about pumping out ideas quickly. Make 3 lists. First a list of adjectives. Second a list of professions. Third a list of locations. Then you just connect them in a way that makes sense or in a way that makes no sense at all. Here’s an example: Adjectives Professions Locations Loud A Barista Office Quiet B Librarian A Art Museum A Brave Actor B Truck Stop C Scared C Trash Collector Library Childish Singer Restaurant Smart Mechanic C Home Responsible Pope Grocery Store B If this were on sheet paper by hand I would just draw arrows (i suggest doing it that way). But, for the sake of keeping this digitally coherent, here are some connections I could make: A) Loud > Librarian > Art Museum B) Quiet > Actor > Grocery Store C) Scared > Mechanic > Truck Stop And so on… Then you look at your connections and you try to think of some situation that those make sense. Or you go the complete opposite and connect ones that are total rubbish to put together. For example, what if a librarian, who is forced to stay quiet in her natural environment (the library) made up for it by being loud everywhere else? Next, you would brainstorm that scenario.

  • A Gay/Straight Comparison of Gay Voices
A GAY/STRAIGHT COMPARISON OF GAY VOICES A RESEARCH PAPER SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE MASTER OF ARTS BY SHANE LANNING DR. CAROLYN MACKAY - ADVISOR BALL STATE UNIVERSITY MUNCIE, INDIANA MAY 2015 Lanning-1 Introduction: This study compares 4 gay male comedians and 4 straight male comedians’ performances of “gay speech”. The researcher observed comedians who were performing gay characters for the following three variables: the lisp ([s̪ ] instead of [s]), a raised pitch, and formal [–iŋ] vs. informal [–In] endings. It was hypothesized that both straight comedians and gay comedians would manipulate their [s] production to the dental [s̪ ] when performing a gay character; moreover, the comedians would also raise their pitch during their performance. The [–iŋ] vs. [–In] sounds, because their production below the level of consciousness, would not vary in the homosexual or heterosexual comedians. The purpose of this comparison was to determine how salient the features were in each group in order to identify stereotypical features associated with gay speech. In other words, if all of the comedians were using a particular feature, one could postulate that this feature has a stronger association with perceived gay speakers. Conversely, if the comedians were not using a particular feature, one could postulate that this feature has a weaker association or is not associated at all with perceived gay speakers. In recent studies, participants were asked to rate speakers on a scale of homosexual to heterosexual and a scale of feminine to masculine. In these studies, the data showed that features like the lisp ([s̪ ] instead of [s]), received higher gay ratings; participants rated speakers’ sexuality as gay more often when they exhibited this feature (Mack & Munson, 2012).

  • Netflix's Big Mouth
Netflix’s Big Mouth Big Mouth = Big Topics The first season of Netflix’s new animated show Big Mouth debuted on September 29, 2017 and is very popular among teens and young adults. Boasting an all-star cast and a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the cartoon is about middle schoolers going through puberty in the most explicit, perverse, and, at times, depraved way possible. Puberty is indeed a difficult time for all of us, and while the show does bring some good to the discussion, it’s also fraught with problems. What do I need to know about Big Mouth? It’s an adult cartoon based on the real-life experiences that comic writers Nick Kroll and An- drew Goldberg had as kids growing up in New York. They share, in graphic detail, what it was like growing up and going through puberty. As most young men do, Nick and Andrew strug- gled through lust, sexuality, relationships with girls, and the ups and downs of friendship. The show features some of the most popular comedians of our time as the voices, including: John Mulaney, Fred Armisen, Kristen Wiig, and Jordan Peele. Although the show is about pre-teens, it is intended for an adult audience. However, Netflix does not effectively limit younger viewers’ access, and undoubtedly, there will be many teens and pre-teens who watch the show. Many of them have lots of questions about sex, and they will be drawn to the show in hopes of finding answers. Unfortunately, due to the content, they are likely to develop some severely warped ideas from watching it.
