The web site, which has been months in W preparation, is designed to access an array of information on the arts and artists in Maine, as it links to the arts world internationally. This is an extraordinary new tool for you to use; it will comprise the only statewide comprehensive calendar listings of arts events, and it will help artists further their careers. Our thanks go to the efforts, many of them well after hours, to Assistant Director Bryan W. Knicely, Information/Technology Manager Lisa Veilleux, and the contractual services of InforME. Turn to page 3 and read in full detail the guidelines for the Artists in Maine Communities Program (AIMC). This program replaces nearly all the individual discretionary grant amounts we announce from time to time. Our plan is to announce one deadline each year, and administer one grant program with significant resources, rather than asking you to compete for smaller amounts in several other categories. AIMC will replace Local Cultural Initiatives grants in the Community Arts Program, and it will replace a number of small grant programs in the Arts in Education Program. Basically, AIMC is the one major program, other than Discovery Research and Partners in Arts and Learning, where you should look for potential funding for projects that involve Maine artists and a collaboration of at least two organizations. The grant application deadline is Oct. 7. In the coming months the Commission will be spending more time on the relationship between the arts and the economy. While the Commission has a strong track record in arts and heritage tourism, making the case for the symbiotic relationship between the arts and the economy needs much more attention. In our own cultural community the relationship seems obvious, but when financial times are uncertain and budgets tight, as they are now, the case gets much more difficult to make. We are looking not only at anecdotal information, but also at better research on the arts and the economy as we are getting help from the Creative Economy Initiative from the New England Foundation for the Arts (www.nefa.org). Colby College Art Museum April 4 — May 10 Bowdoin College Museum of Art May 21 — June 28 Carnegie Gallery, University of Maine, Orono July 8 — August 30 The opening at Colby College to be on the occasion of the first Arts Festival of the Maine Federation of Women's Clubs. 1970 is the Sesquicentennial year of the State of Maine. In observance of this, the Bowdoin College Museum of Art, the Carnegie Gallery of the University of Maine at Orono and the Colby College Art Museum are presenting the exhibition. Landscape in Maine, 1820-1970. It was during the first few years of Maine's statehood that American artists turned for the first time to landscape painting. Prior to that time, the primary form of painting in this country had been portraiture. When landscape appeared at all in a painting it was as the background of a portrait, or very occasionally, as the subject of an overmantel painting. Almost simultaneously with the artists' interest in landscape as a suitable sub- ject for a painting, they discovered Maine and its varied landscape. Since then, many of the finest American artists have lived in Maine where they have produced some of their most expressive works.

I'd like you in this interview to talk generally about your life and career, your life as it is related to your career. Maybe you could just begin at the beginning, if you wish. Do you want to talk about family, childhood, memories, things that led you to do one... thing or another? STEPHEN MORGAN ETNIER: I think that sometimes when you're asked what motivated you, frequently I think when this embarrassing question is asked, I say I think I took up painting so I wouldn't have to work. I was very shocked by my father's office and I regarded going to an office somewhat the way you would going to school. I figured if I wasn't careful I'd be trapped in that kind of a life. I think I must have made that decision very early that I was going to get out of business no matter what, because it was too close to school.

Houghton-Mifflin 1917-1959. Five Volumes, complete. Volumes One and Two are editions of 275 numbered copies, Volume Three is an edition of 525 numered copies, Volume Four is an edition of 600 numbered copies and Volume Five is an edition of 400 numbered copies. All 4to, cloth-backed boards, volumes Two through Five with DJs. Each volume with an original etched frontispiece, each of which is signed except for that in volume Five, which was published after Benson's death. The original etchings are: Vol 1: Pair of Ducks, 1916, Paff 102; Vol 2: Two Geese, 1919, Paff 158; Vol 3: On Set Wings, 1923, Paff 223; Vol 4: Flying Pintail, 1927, Paff 275; Vol 5: Perching Grouse, 1941, Paff 347. Though there were some proofs,these prints were not editioned separately from the catalogue, and were each printed in whatever edition size the catalogue edition was. Volume One with a few small abrasions to the front endpapers where they were separated after sticking; Volumes Two through Five all Fine, but the DJs to Volumes Two and Four have 1 1/2 to 2 inch chips at the tops of the spines, and a few smaller chips.
