Signed: ____________________________ Date: _________________ 2 Abstract This thesis is an interdisciplinary work that explores research questions on women's discourses about media and politics in Zanzibar. How do Zanzibar women become modern in order to participate in public spheres? What lacunae operate within the conventional tropes of modernity that limit a full exploration of their conversations? This is the first inter-disciplinary ethnographic work within the audience/reception studies genre of media studies to focus specifically on Islamic women and their iterations of voice, agency and interiorisation of control in East Africa. Located within post-colonial debates, the work prioritises gender in East Africa as a key marker for localised behaviours and responses to globalised modernity, accessing women and girls’ voices and opinions to explore this. The work critically interrogates existing work on public spheres and asks us if we (in the Global North) are looking in the wrong places and asking the wrong questions. We need to reimagine the Southern public sphere from the perspective of women in Zanzibar; we need to examine the meanings of agency, modernity and civil engagement in an African context, factoring in the particularities of shame, secrecy, concealment, precariousity, gossip, corruption and non-state engagement. Using polyvocal definitions of media and empirical research, this thesis redefines the nature of public and political agency for Islamic Women in Zanzibar and explores issues of agency and the ‘self-help’ qualities of the media. It also examines the complexities of the weak state and partitioned-off local elites who have access to global networks and influences that often do not include the Global North. 3 Acknowledgements I owe a big debt of gratitude and respect to three incredible supervisors: patient, clever, offering insights, critiques, recommendations, intellectual acuity, humour, warmth, good coffee and above all valuable support. In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. 1 Abstract This study examines the potential for contemporary visual art to reinvigorate democracy in 21st century Nairobi, Kenya, through an interdisciplinary investigation. The new millennium ushered in fresh hope for democratisation in the postcolonial East African country. In 2002, Daniel arap Moi’s 24 years of authoritarian rule ended. The opposition were victorious at the ballot box, instilling a belief amongst the electorate that formal political processes could bring change. However, the post-election violence of 2007/8 shattered such convictions. But, from this election result came a progressive Constitution and with it possibilities for creating change. These momentous events underscore Kenya’s topsy-turvy path towards democracy – a path whose trajectory is charted in the experience of ordinary Kenyans who believe in democracy’s value and their right to participate in politics and civil life. Artists, too, have been at the forefront of this ongoing struggle. This study draws on empirical research to demonstrate contemporary visual art’s capacity to expand ways of practising, experiencing and understanding democracy.

Sanders* Abstract To what extent was international pressure placed on Nyerere and Karume to unify their two states in April 1964? The argument made is that even though Americans were initially very pleased with the outcome of the Union—because they thought it would help stem the spread of communism in the region—this was not a Western-initiated plan forced upon East African leaders. Indeed, the evidence shows that Americans were largely in the dark and in fact very frustrated by their lack of influence on the situation. Instead, the Union merely served as a confluence of African and American interests. The internal factors are inspected by highlighting African concerns over outside interference, worries about domestic stability, and a desire by Karume to consolidate his power.

    Africa at LSE: Book Review: Julius Nyerere by Paul Bjerk Page 1 of 3 Book Review: Julius Nyerere by Paul Bjerk In a short and precise volume, Paul Bjerk succeeds in debating the legacy of Nyerere in six short chapters. The book deals with the highs and lows of Nyerere’s illustrious political career and balances this in a manner befitting a great African statesman, says Nicodemus Minde. Paul Bjerk has taken keen interest in the study of Tanzania’s postcolonial history and in particular he has written about the country’s foreign policy and national building agenda with an emphasis on the leadership of Tanzania’s founding president Julius Nyerere. He is the author of Building a Peaceful Nation: Julius Nyerere and the Establishment of Sovereignty in Tanzania, (1960-1964) – which captures the very essence of national building in the formative years of Tanzania’s independence. Having been a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Iringa in Tanzania, Bjerk builds on his previous studies of the country by writing a short, succinct biography of Julius Nyerere. The book generally highlights the personal life of Nyerere, who was fondly known as Mwalimu – Swahili for teacher. The political story of Mwalimu has been told in many platforms including books, articles, monographs and documentaries. Bjerk, through conversations with Nyerere’s childhood friends tells of Mwalimu’s early life, growing up as a chief’s son. Nyerere’s mother was the fifth wife of Chief Nyerere Burito and as such educating the child of a fifth wife was not always a priority. However, after been convinced by another chief, Nyerere’s father sent his son to school.

My Fellow Citizens, We are today marking 40 years of our independence, the independence of Tanzania Mainland, then known as Tanganyika. We have just seen some of the Tanzanians who were born at the time of our independence. They are adults now. But they have no first hand experience of what it was like to live under colonialism. They only read about it, or are informed by those who lived through that experience. On a day like this, therefore, we need to remind ourselves of what our independence really means.

He shows us some really nice clips between pidgin pop, hip hop pantsula and house, from Nigeria and Mozambique to South Africa and Kenya. By the way he is shaping coupé-décalé from – and that might be surprising – Geneva, Switzerland. Artist: Timaya (Nigeria) Track: Ukwu Pidgin pop music from Nigeria got coined the term Afrobeats with an «s». Even though unlikely Fela Kuti's Afrobeat, Afrobeats is rather unpolitical it is still the most celebrated soundtrack in african nightclubs of today, with a growing impact on global pop music. It fuses and borrows rhythms and melodies from all kind of genres such as Congolese Soukous, R'n'B, Afrobeat, Coupé-Décalé or South African House and spices them up with local lyrics in pidgin english and auto-tune effects. Artists such as P-Square, D’banj or Wizkid are among top selling artists and first stars of this african music movement being played in clubs in the US aswell as in Kingston Jamaica. Timaya is another upcoming star from the megacity of Lagos. With his hit single «Sonko» he recently put a spotlight on the dancehall culture of Lagos biggest ghetto Ajegunle. On his latest song called «Ukuw», meaning waist, he jumped on the bandwagon of Nigeria's state to the art afrohouse productions. This joint not only got us twerking in our office last year.
