Specifically, it focuses on musical engagements between, on the one hand, the Caribbean and West Africa and, on the other, the United States and Southern Africa. It argues that the influence of diasporan music on modern African music, especially popular music, has been immense. These influences and exchanges have created a complex tapestry of musical Afro- internationalism and Afro-modernism and music has been a critical site, a soundscape, in the construction of new diasporan and African identities. -

Atlantic Council AFRICA CENTER ISSUE BRIEF Getting Creative About Development SEPTEMBER 2018 AUBREY HRUBY y 2035, sub-Saharan Africa will have more working-age people than the rest of the world combined. African governments col- lectively need to create eighteen million new jobs each year to absorb the large, young, and ambitious population coming to Bworking age.1 But technological advances, combined with the underde- veloped infrastructure of most African nations, mean that the tried and true model of export-oriented industrialization, which allowed the East and Southeast Asian economies to develop very rapidly, is unlikely to produce adequate job creation in the vast majority of African markets. In fact, manufacturing as a share of total economic activity in Africa has stagnated at about 10 percent,2 and—though there are notable excep- tions, such as Ethiopia—the continent as a whole is deindustrializing.3 Agriculture still continues to serve as the backbone of most African economies, with over 70 percent of Africans earning a living in that sector.4 But as Africa urbanizes, the composition of economic activity is rap- idly changing, shifting away from agriculture and towards the services sector. Taylor, Chair This dissertation examines how Tuareg people in Niger use music to reckon with their increasing but incomplete entanglement in global neoliberal capitalism. I argue that a variety of social actors—Tuareg musicians, fans, festival organizers, and government officials, as well as music producers from Europe and North America—have come to regard Tuareg music as a resource by which to realize economic, political, and other social ambitions. Such treatment of culture-as-resource is intimately linked to the global expansion of neoliberal capitalism, which has led individual and collective subjects around the world to take on a more entrepreneurial nature by exploiting representations of their identities for a variety of ends. While Tuareg collective identity has strongly been tied to an economy of pastoralism and caravan trade, the contemporary moment demands a reimagining of what it means to be, and to survive as, Tuareg. Since the 1970s, cycles of drought, entrenched poverty, and periodic conflicts have pushed more and more Tuaregs to pursue wage labor in cities across northwestern Africa or to work as trans- ii Saharan smugglers; meanwhile, tourism expanded from the 1980s into one of the region’s biggest industries by drawing on pastoralist skills while capitalizing on strategic essentialisms of Tuareg culture and identity. -

The MAMA, as it is affectionately known, highlights the “gold standard” in contemporary music, creativity and achievement across the continent. Lighting up the MAMA stage on 22 October will be African stars Davido (Nigeria), C4 Pedro (Angola), Sauti Sol (Kenya), Diamond (Tanzania), Emtee (South Africa), Kwesta (South Africa), Patoranking (Nigeria); Alikiba (Tanzania), Babes Wodumo (South Africa), Cassper Nyovest (South Africa), Nasty C(South Africa), Ycee (Nigeria) and Yemi Alade (Nigeria), while US hip hop star Future (nominee for Best International) will also be on site. Many more African artists remain to be announced. The definitive annual celebration of African and international talent and achievement, MAMA 2016 recognises and rewards musicians and achievers in 18 categories who have made the most impact on African contemporary music and culture over the previous year. The ceremony will feature stunning performances from African and international artists along with the show’s signature cross-genre and cross-border collaborations. -

In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. 1 Abstract This study examines the potential for contemporary visual art to reinvigorate democracy in 21st century Nairobi, Kenya, through an interdisciplinary investigation. The new millennium ushered in fresh hope for democratisation in the postcolonial East African country. In 2002, Daniel arap Moi’s 24 years of authoritarian rule ended. The opposition were victorious at the ballot box, instilling a belief amongst the electorate that formal political processes could bring change. However, the post-election violence of 2007/8 shattered such convictions. But, from this election result came a progressive Constitution and with it possibilities for creating change. These momentous events underscore Kenya’s topsy-turvy path towards democracy – a path whose trajectory is charted in the experience of ordinary Kenyans who believe in democracy’s value and their right to participate in politics and civil life. Artists, too, have been at the forefront of this ongoing struggle. This study draws on empirical research to demonstrate contemporary visual art’s capacity to expand ways of practising, experiencing and understanding democracy. -

Monday 24th August 2015 This week, in studios across the continent, Africa’s first crowdsourced song was recorded by some of the biggest names for a global initiative to get the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals to everyone on the planet. The Global Goals campaign, which launches next month, will release an All- African song, titled “Tell Everybody”, that aims to inspire young people to know their rights encompassed in the 17 goals and hold their governments accountable to their promises to end extreme poverty, fight inequality and climate change by 2030. Award-winning producers Cobhams Asuquo (Nigeria), David KING DAVID Muthami (Kenya) and Ellputo (Mozambique) have collaborated on a track which was recorded by Mafikizolo (South Africa), Becca (Ghana) and Diamond (Tanzania) in Johannesburg’s Jazzworx studio this week. Sauti Sol (Kenya) and Toofan (Togo) put their verses down on the track in studios in Nairobi and Lome and in the next couple of days, Mr Asuquo will travel to Lagos to capture the voices of Nigeria’s Yemi Alade and Wizkid. In order to ensure the song captured the voice of Africa’s Youth, the songwriters decided to crowd source two verses (one French, one English) for the song via a mobile phone competition, “Add Your Voice/Add Your Verse”, run by Every1 Mobile. During the two weeks that the competition ran, over 3000 people entered from 25 African countries. Cobhams Asuquo said, “We decided to let the young voices of Africa be heard in this song. Not only did we love the winning verses but all the entries informed the vision, lyrics and sound of the song. -
