LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

On behalf of Boston University and our Department of Athletics, it is my honor to welcome you all to tonight’s event.

Traditionally, our annual Student-Athlete Awards Reception has focused on our graduating seniors. Thanks to a collaborative effort with SAAC, we have not only brought in the entire student-athlete body this year, but also introduced a new set of awards: The Rhettys.

Our goal is to make this evening a memorable one for everyone involved. The dedication of our student-athletes is unmatched, and we cherish the opportunity to honor their successes in all aspects of college life.

Thank you to everyone in our department — student- athletes, coaches & staff — for your efforts in making Boston University a special place where we all can learn, grow and excel. You make us Who We Are.

I would also like to wish the members of the Class of 2017 the best of luck in their future endeavors. We are so very proud to call you Terriers.

Go BU!

Operated by the Janssen Sports Leadership Center, the Academy was started in Fall 2013 as a result of a commitment by Boston University alumnus William Bloom (CGS'82 and SMG'84). Bloom, a former BU rugby player, is a member of Boston University's Athletic Director's Council and also serves as the Athletics Campaign Co-Chair and a Boston University Overseer.

The Leadership Academy develops, challenges and supports student-athletes and coaches in their continual quest to become world-class leaders in athletics, academics and life; the Academy functions to equip participants at every level with the skill set necessary to be a confident, cooperative, critical decision maker and ethical contributor in a competitive and ever-changing world. Leaders of Distinction The student-athletes have their leadership abilities evaluated by their teammates and coaches through the 360 Team Leadership Evaluation. For a student-athlete to qualify for this prestigious award they have to earn their teammates’ and coaches’ utmost trust and respect by scoring 105 or above on the evaluation as well as score themselves at 105 or higher.

Rachel Bloznalis Justin Flynn Women’s Soccer Men’s Track and Field Bloom Leadership Academy Legacy Leaders Graduates This program focuses on applying leadership skills to positively impact the team, athletic department, campus, and community at large. A significant component of the Legacy Leaders program is for each leader to undergo a 360 degree evaluation of their leadership skills. The 360 evaluation involves teammates and coaches anonymously rating their leaders using the Team Leadership Evaluation. Based on averaging the ratings of their teammates and coaches and comparing them to their self-ratings, the leaders are able to clearly see their leadership strengths and areas for improvement. The leaders then create a comprehensive and customized Leadership Development Plan to build upon their strengths and target their areas to improve.
