  • Former Southern Miss Coach Kay James Receives WBCA's Jostens-Berenson Lifetime Achievement Award
Former Southern Miss coach Kay James receives WBCA's Jostens-Berenson Lifetime Achievement Award ATLANTA (March 8, 2012) - Kay James, formerly the head coach at University of Southern Mississippi, will receive the 2012 Jostens-Berenson Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of her lifelong commitment of service to women's basketball, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced today. "This award represents someone who has dedicated their life to elevating the game of women's basketball, and Kay James is a prime example of someone who has changed the game for the better," said WBCA CEO Beth Bass. "It is my pleasure to present the Jostens-Berenson Lifetime Achievement Award to Kay James." James led the Southern Mississippi women's basketball program for 22 years. During that time, James posted 403 wins, making her the winningest coach in the program's history. With a career coaching mark of 488-244, James joined an elite club of 46 coaches with more than 400 victories and is among the top 25 in Division I in all-time wins, seasons coached and games coached. Adding to her impressive resume is four- time conference coach of the year award, 10 postseason appearances and a position as an assistant with USA Basketball for several years. In 1998, James was honored by the WBCA with the Carol Eckman award. As one of only five to receive both awards, James joins the late Kay Yow, Jill Hutchinson, Marsha Sharp and Sue Gunter as an influential group of women's basketball advocates. "Jostens is honored to recognize Kay James with the Jostens-Berenson Lifetime Achievement Award for her commitment to Southern Mississippi, her players and women's basketball," said Chris Poitras, director, Sports Sales and Marketing, Jostens.

Louise O'Neal Earns WBCA's Jostens-Berenson Service Award ATLANTA, Ga. (March 10, 2004) --The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) has named Louise O'Neal as the winner of its 2004 Jostens-Berenson Service Award, recognizing O'Neal's lifelong commitment of service to the game of women's basketball. "Louise is a great pioneer of the game and we are happy to present her with such a prestigious honor," said WBCA CEO, Beth Bass. "She certainly deserves to have her name mentioned in the same breath as past recipients of this award." O'Neal is the Athletic Director of Wellesley College and has been a longstanding mentor and influential leader in women's athletics. O'Neal has served on the NCAA Management Council, as well as the U.S. Olympic Games Selection Committee from 1976-1980. For her many years of service, in 1988, she was inducted into the Connecticut Women's Basketball Hall of Fame. "Jostens would like to congratulate Louise O'Neal on being selected as the 2004 Jostens-Berenson Service Award winner", said Lavisse Smith, Jostens' Sports Sales Manager. "Through O'Neal's ongoing service to women's athletics, she has created opportunities for athletes, coaches and administrators dedicated to the improvement of women's athletics." For 14 years, O'Neal served as head women's basketball coach at Southern Connecticut University, while also spending three years at the helm of Yale University where her team won the Ivy League Championship in her last season at the school. Not only a leader in the basketball community, O'Neal was also a coach of volleyball and badminton for eight years.

Copyright Ellyn L. Bartges 2014 1 “CIRCLE MORE BEFORE YOU LAND”: AN ETHNOGRAPHY OF FEMINIST LEADER DR. CHARLOTTE WEST BY ELLYN L. BARTGES DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Kinesiology with a minor in Gender and Women’s Studies in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2014 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Synthia Sydnor, Chair Professor Norman K. Denzin Associate Professor Melissa Littlefield Professor C.L. Cole Professor Amelia Woods 2 Abstract The dissertation is an ethnographic biography focused on Charlotte West. Material was derived from a series of oral history interviews conducted over a nine-year period starting in 2005 as part of my master’s degree program and then used as a primary resource for my dissertation. Born in 1932, Charlotte is still living, volunteering her time to a variety of causes and working to protect Title IX. Whether it is testifying before Congress or educating future female administrators through the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators (NACWAA) she has retained her drive and passion for protecting and extending opportunities for women in sport and athletics. Her humble approach to life is recounted through her actions and stories; over the course of my interviews with Dr. West, she gradually revealed the influences on her philosophy, training, friends and leadership style. Her journey from a snowbird student in elementary school to one of the most influential and well respected leaders of the modern women’s sports era is compelling to historians, and instructive to students of cultural and women’s studies.
