(July 30, 2012) – In a move that furthers the legacy of legendary winemaking at Pahlmeyer Winery, founder and owner Jayson Pahlmeyer has announced the appointment of two rising stars passionate about their specialties: Kale Anderson as director of winemaking for Pahlmeyer’s Napa Valley vineyard and operations, and Bibiana González Rave as consulting winemaker overseeing the winery’s Sonoma Coast vineyard and operations. “I’m thrilled to bring in these young, cutting-edge winemakers, each perfectly suited to the wines and estate vineyard project they’ll oversee,” said Pahlmeyer. “Their talent and excitement have reignited the passion I had when I hired Randy Dunn, Helen Turley and Erin Green.” With more than 10 years of winemaking experience working with luminaries such as Mark Aubert, Philippe Melka and David Abreu, Anderson will carry on the Pahlmeyer tradition of producing rich, powerful Napa Valley wines, including the winery’s flagship Bordeaux-style proprietary red blend. After earning a B.S. in Viticulture and Enology from U.C. Davis, Anderson served an internship at Colgin Cellars’ Pritchard Hill Estate and worked as assistant winemaker at Terra Valentine. He joined Cliff Lede Vineyards in 2005 where he was promoted from assistant winemaker to winemaker for Poetry and Cliff Lede wines. “Following in the footsteps of such esteemed winemakers is an honor and a challenge I’m thrilled to take on,” said Anderson. “With Jayson's excitement and commitment, and the phenomenal team here, we’re primed to continue the winery’s incredible success. She earned a degree as a technician of Viticulture and Oenology in Angoulême, and in Oenology from the University of Bordeaux before spending several years chasing harvests in Burgundy and South Africa before settling in California. There she worked for wineries including Peay Vineyards, Au Bon Climat and Qupe. Most recently, she was winemaker with Lynmar Estate.     2013/2014 VINTAGES Dear Friend, Fifteen years ago, my father purchased a small organic farm on the extreme Sonoma Coast and embarked on his journey to grow world class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Upon Helen Turley’s declaration that this area was destined to be “the La Tâche of California”, he and David Abreu planted thirty acres with a diverse and thoughtful selection of clones and rootstocks. Set at high-density intervals, the vines burrow deeply and produce concentrated berries. Today, we are reaping the benefits of their vision and hard work, with mature vines that produce a vibrant spectrum of single vineyard fruit. The full expression of the site can be best enjoyed in our estate vineyard blends, the 2014 Wayfarer Vineyard Chardonnay and the 2014 Wayfarer Vineyard Pinot Noir. This vintage is open and generous right out of the bottle, possessing soft tannins, great acidity and a distinctive minerality.     A Legend is Born Anointed 94 points by Robert Parker, the first release, the 1986 Pahlmeyer Proprietary Red, launched Pahlmeyer’s astonishing track record of critical acclaim. In 1989, Jayson invited rising star winemaker Bob Levy to produce the first vintages of Pahlmeyer Chardonnay. The 1991 Chardonnay sold out immediately, giving Jayson good reason to decline a screenwriter’s request for samples to use in a Hollywood movie. In the end though, he acquiesced and to his great surprise, the wine’s big role in the battle-of-the sexes blockbuster Disclosure helped further the frenzy surrounding Pahlmeyer. In 1993, Helen Turley took the winemaking reins, beginning her own rise to prominence. Meyer, Special to The Chronicle Wine lovers have long monitored the career paths of star winemakers like Helen Turley, Heidi Peterson Barrett and Tony Soter, buying up any wine these oenological Midases have touched. But notice is rarely given to the vineyard managers who produce the grapes that the winemakers use. If it's true that you can't make great wine without great fruit, then should not attention be paid to those responsible for growing the best grapes? Consumer recognition of vineyard managers is in its early stages, but high- end wine drinkers are taking notice. "Among people who are really serious about wine, vineyard managers are starting to get a real cachet in the marketplace," says Chuck Hayward, wine buyer for The Jug Shop wine store in San Francisco. Vineyard management has turned into big business. Someone has to plant trophy vineyards like Martha's and Fay's. Because few absentee owners have the desire or capabilities to handle the less-than-sexy farming aspects of owning a vineyard, they generally out source the agricultural details to a vineyard manager. For years, vineyard management companies like Abreu, Jack Neal & Sons, Barbour Vineyard Enterprises, Pina, Renteria and Madrigal have been working behind the scenes farming vineyards for some of Napa Valley's most prestigious labels, including Araujo, Heitz's Martha's Vineyard, Grace Family Vineyard, Showket, Etude and Duckhorn. In Sonoma County, Steve and Joe Dutton have been growing grapes and doing vineyard work for wineries like Kistler, Flowers and Merry Edwards.
