If you drink no Noir, you Pinot Noir Volume 10, Issue 20 November 6, 2015 Benovia Celebrates Tenth Anniversary with Exceptional Offerings I have followed the emergence of Benovia Winery in Santa Rosa since its origins and I have tasted every wine from this winery over the past eight years beginning with the first commercially released wines from the 2005 vintage. Winemaker and viticulturist extraordinaire, Michael Sullivan, had to make do initially with an aged winery and equipment and primarily purchased grapes. The limited amount of estate vineyard sources needed considerable revitalization. Undaunted, he continued to adapt and reshape his winemaking and viticultural goals. Today, Benovia Winery has a modern new winemaking facility dedicated to Pinot Noir and is transitioning to all estate grown wines. The Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays from the 2012 vintage were stunning examples of persistence and dedication, and the equally stellar 2013 wines celebrate the winery’s tenth anniversary and remarkable advances achieved over a relatively short span of time. The idea for Benovia Winery was first launched in 2002 when Joe Anderson and his spouse Mary Dewane, former CEO’s in the healthcare industry, bought the Cohn Vineyard located in the far western reaches of the Russian River Valley. The property included a home which allowed Joe and Mary, who lived in Arizona, to spend time in Sonoma County and pursue their winery aspirations. In 2005, they bought an 18-acre ranch located in the Laguna de Santa Rosa subregion of the Russian River Valley from Cecil DeLoach. The modest Hartman Road Vineyards and Winery property (where Merry Edwards made wine at one time under the Merry Vintners label) included a dated winery and 13.5 acres of Pinot Noir. -

2013/2014 VINTAGES Dear Friend, Fifteen years ago, my father purchased a small organic farm on the extreme Sonoma Coast and embarked on his journey to grow world class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Upon Helen Turley’s declaration that this area was destined to be “the La Tâche of California”, he and David Abreu planted thirty acres with a diverse and thoughtful selection of clones and rootstocks. Set at high-density intervals, the vines burrow deeply and produce concentrated berries. Today, we are reaping the benefits of their vision and hard work, with mature vines that produce a vibrant spectrum of single vineyard fruit. The full expression of the site can be best enjoyed in our estate vineyard blends, the 2014 Wayfarer Vineyard Chardonnay and the 2014 Wayfarer Vineyard Pinot Noir. This vintage is open and generous right out of the bottle, possessing soft tannins, great acidity and a distinctive minerality. Each year we set aside small amounts of Pinot Noir from those clones which display exceptional character and balance, and bottle them as four stand-alone cuvees: “Mother Rock” shows a deep, earthy flintiness and velvety texture; “Golden Mean” is aromatic and bold with a bright acidity; “Paige’s Ridge” is rich and ripe, most true to a California-style; and “The Traveler” is ethereal and provocative, the most Burgundian in style. For the next five years, we recommend that you decant these wines for at least an hour before serving. Our sincere thanks for your eager support of Wayfarer. It’s been the realization of a decades-long dream and we are proud to share it with you. -

THE WEST SONOMA COAST AND ITS WINES MIKE POTASHNIK, CO-PUBLISHER, INTERNATIONAL WINE REVIEW • The West Sonoma Coast (Far Sonoma Coast) is a new and exciting viticultural area for growing grapes and producing wine on the edge • Its topography and weather and remoteness present big challenges to the growers and winemakers and is not for the faint hearted. The following year he and his family planted the first vines in what would eventually become the renowned Les Pavots vineyard. An intensely personal endeavor, the Winery today is characterized by the multigenerational presence of the Michael family and their shared commitment to what they call 100 x 100: one-hundred percent family tenure for one-hundred years.
