The four instrument families are: strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion. Today we are going to explore the percussion family. Get your tapping fingers and toes ready! The percussion family includes all of the instruments that are “struck” in some way. We have no official records of when humans first used percussion instruments, but from ancient times, drums have been used for tribal dances and for communications of all kinds. Today, there are more instruments in the percussion family than in any other. They can be grouped into two types: 1. Percussion instruments that make just one pitch. These include: Snare drum, bass drum, cymbals, tambourine, triangle, wood block, gong, maracas and castanets Triangle Castanets Tambourine Snare Drum Wood Block Gong Maracas Bass Drum Cymbals 3 2. Percussion instruments that play different pitches, even a melody. These include: Kettle drums (also called timpani), the xylophone (and marimba), orchestra bells, the celesta and the piano Piano Celesta Orchestra Bells Xylophone Kettle Drum How percussion instruments work There are several ways to get a percussion instrument to make a sound. You can strike some percussion instruments with a stick or mallet (snare drum, bass drum, kettle drum, triangle, xylophone); or with your hand (tambourine). -

Percussion Primer / Triangle by Neil Grover SELECTION The triangle should be the highest, non-pitched member of the percussion family. Sizes range from 4” to 10”, however, the best size for concert playing is between 6” and 9”. A larger triangle provides a bigger internal working area for easier execution, however, it is heavier and more difficult to control. Triangles are made from steel, brass or bronze, each producing a different sonority. SUSPENSION A triangle needs to be suspended so that it vibrates unencumbered and freely, al- lowing maximum overtone resonance to be produced. It is very important that the instrument be suspended using a very thin, yet strong, mono-filament line. Fishing line works great and is also inexpensive. The use of string, cable, shoelaces, etc. will effec- tively dampen the resonance of any triangle. Using a second “catch line” will pre- vent the triangle from falling to the floor, should the primary line break. A light “triangle clip” will allow the triangle to be mounted on a music stand when not in use. STROKE The triangle should never be played when mounted on a music stand. It should al- ways be held at eye level and struck on the bottom leg with a motion that “pushes away” the bottom leg. This method will produce the maximum overtone sonority. A triangle sound full of overtones will blend with other instruments. Remember, a tri- angle is a non-pitched instrument and should have a very lush array of overtones, it should not sound like a bell! The inputs to the kit are small drum pads, which house a piezoelectric transducer. The output voltage from this device is detected and its output is interfaced with microcontroller . This information is processed through a Drum sound controller module which controls audio playback. The background work focuses on the concepts of tracking the timing of musical signals, deriving information from them, and creating a musical accompaniment. The system will then generate an expressive drum beat to accompany the audio signal in real time. The system is intended as a practice tool as well as a means to observe the musical interaction that may occur between humans and machine. It would involve implementing on an EEPROM for additional sound storage. It will contain a single module which will carry all sound database and allow the player to make their own patches and it will make it independent from interfacing with a computer. The Tablacomprises two drums that are structurally different and produce a range of overtones. This paper describes the spectral characteristics of the most frequently played syllable Naover five Tablavariants viz. Kali 1 C Sharp (Tipe), Pandri 2 D, Pandri 1 C, Kali 5 G Sharp, andPandri 2 D (Dalya), using two different analysis techniques viz.1) Wavelet analysis using MATLAB,and 2) FFT using:a) Origin 8, and b) DSO in real time. Wavelet analysis is used in general for analyzing localized variations of power within a time series and to determine the frequency distribution in the time-frequency domain, while the FFT computes the transformation of the original time domain signal to a representation in the frequency domain. The FFT therefore, is used to determine the prominences viz. the overtones in the syllable played. Parts of the Drum Set ANATOMY OF A DRUM TOP (BATTER) HEAD: The most basic component of a drum, the head is a round membrane made of a synthetic material usually mylar, that is stretched across the shell, with varying degrees of tension. HOOP: The drum hoop is usually made of either cast or stamped metal, although some drummers prefer wood hoops. Hoops are constructed with a flange shaped to hold the head on the shell for tensioning. TENSION ROD: These mount through holes in the hoop and thread into the lug to maintain the desired tension.
