View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Sydney eScholarship 19 Language revitalisation: community and school programs working together Diane McNaboe1 and Susan Poetsch2 Abstract Since it was published in 2003 the New South Wales Aboriginal Languages K– 10 Syllabus has led to a substantial increase in the number of school programs operating in the state. It has supported the quality of those programs, and the status and recognition given to Aboriginal languages and cultures in the curriculum. School programs also complement community initiatives to revitalise, strengthen and share Aboriginal languages in New South Wales. As linguistic and cultural knowledge increases among adult community members, school programs provide a channel for them to continue to develop their own skills and knowledge and to pass on this heritage. This paper takes Wiradjuri as an example of language revitalisation, and describes achievements in adult language learning and the process of developing a school program with strong input from community. A brief history of Wiradjuri language revitalisation Wiradjuri is one of the central inland New South Wales (NSW) languages (Wafer & Lissarrague 2008, pp. 215–25). In recent decades various language teams have investigated and analysed archival sources for Wiradjuri and collected information from both written and oral sources (Büchli 2006, pp. 58–60). These teams include Grant and Rudder (2001a, b, c, d; 2005), Hosking and McNicol (1993), McNicol and Hosking (1994) and Donaldson (1984), as well as Christopher Kirkbright, George Fisher and Cheryl Riley, who have been working with Wiradjuri people in and near Sydney. -

Mapping Aboriginal nations: the ‘nation’ concept of late nineteenth century anthropologists in Australia Kevin Blackburn From the late 18th century to the end of the 19th century, the word ‘nation’ underwent a change in meaning from a term describing cultural entities comprised of people of common descent, to the modern definition of a nation as a sovereign people. The politi- cal scientist Liah Greenfeld called this shift in the definition of the word nation a ‘semantic transformation’, in which ‘the meaning of the original concept is gradually obscured, and the new one emerges as conventional’.1 The historian Eric Hobsbawm noted that the New English Dictionary ‘pointed out in 1908, that the old meaning of the word envisaged mainly the ethnic unit, but recent usage rather stressed “the notion of political unity and independence”’.2 The political scientist Louis Snyder observed that the ‘Latin natio, (birth, race) originally signified a social grouping based on real or imag- inary ties of blood’. However by the end of the 19th century the term ‘nation’ had come to mean an ‘active and conscious portion of the population’, who shared a ‘common political sentiment’.3 The work of historians Hobsbawm and Terence Ranger suggests that in the 19th century a nation was not only a cultural group of people of common ethnic origin, but such a group of people who in addition believed that they were a united political entity possessing or desiring sovereignty.4 The cultural anthropologist Benedict Anderson has described the idea of the nation as an ‘imagined community’. He argued that a nation ‘is imagined because the members of even the smallest nations will never know most of their fellow-members, meet them, or even hear of them, yet in the minds of each lives their communion’. -

Downloaded from http://hdl.handle.net/10072/365954 Griffith Research Online https://research-repository.griffith.edu.au The Australian ‘Settler’ Colonial-Collective Problem David John Jones Dip VA, BVA Hons, MAVA Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Visual Arts Queensland College of Art Art, Education and Law Griffith University June 2017 1 Abstract This studio-based project identifies and interrogates the Australian denial of violent national foundation as a ‘settler’ problem, which is framed by the contemporary clinical and social concept of a ‘vicious cycle of anxiety’. The body of work I have produced aims to disrupt the denial of invasion and the erasure of Aboriginal culture through accepted narratives of European settlement of Australia. By aligning collective denial with anxiety, it presents a pathway for remediation through situational exposure; in this case, through works of art. The critical perspective on the invasion and colonisation of Australia is presented in the discursive and non- discursive modes of communication of the coloniser not to arbitrate or appease but to amplify the content. The structure of the exegesis also draws from Aboriginal narrative methodology and integrates with, and is informed by, the studio production in printmaking using demanding traditional European graphic techniques such as etching and aquatint. 2 Statement of Originality: This work has not previously been submitted for a degree or diploma in any university.
