Since that time, he has been a student of Dr. Marjorie Lee in Washington, DC for 9 years, and he is currently a student of Dr. Robert Roux at Shepherd School of Music, Rice University in Houston, Texas. His impressive list of credentials includes solo performances at Manhattan’s Steinway Hall, George Mason University’s Performing Arts Center Young Artists Series, the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage, the Rising Star Concerts at The Alden, JoAnn Rose Gallery, New World Center in Miami, Harris Theater, and the McKenna and Studley Theatres in New Paltz, New York. In 2014, he won top prizes in the Rice University Piano Competition and in the Jacob Flier International Piano Competition, as well as first place in the Miami Summer Music Festival. Most recently in 2015, he was awarded first place in the Jacob Flier International Piano Competition. Meet the Director: Orion Rapp Woodwind Summer Dr. Orion Rapp is principal oboist Music Week of the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, a position he has held since fall 2013. IPFW Rhinehart Music Center He also served as principal oboist Orion Rapp, Director of the Illinois Symphony Orchestra since 2009, where he is regularly IPFW Community Arts Academy featured as a soloist. American Masterpieces Chamber Music Samuel Barber, circa 1960 The Some of the composer’s best-known Chamber works for small ensemble, written in his youth, entered the repertoire early and remained there. Music of by Barbara Heyman oncert audiences know Samuel Barber for his large-scale orchestral works—the Overture to The School for Scandal, Cthe violin and cello concertos, Knoxville: Summer of 1915, the symphonies, and the three Essays. His chamber music oeuvre is small, but some of these works remain favorites in the repertoire. String players revere the String Quartet in B Minor, Dover Beach, and the Cello Sonata. And wind players know that Barber’s penchant for writing solos for flute, clarinet, and oboe (his signature instrument) Samuel in orchestral works also expresses itself in such small-scale works as Summer Music, Capricorn Concerto, and the 1959 Elegy for Flute and Piano. In recent years I have been assembling a complete thematic catalog of Barber’s works, and in the process have come across some early, unpublished ensemble works that few are familiar with. Among these, the most important is certainly the third movement of Barber’s Sonata in F minor for Violin and Piano, rediscovered in 2006. Masquerading under the title page Sonata for Violoncello and Piano, the music turned up in the estate of the Barber Pennsylvania artist Tom Bostell, who had been a boarder in the Barber family’s West Chester, Pennsylvania, home. When asked to view the 17 pages of manuscript, I recognized the first three pages as those that were missing from the autograph manuscript of the Cello Sonata at the Library of Congress.

Edited slightly, omitting some detail, nothing new is added to Sam’s text. Perhaps a little long for a program note, but it is both fascinating and enlightening: “In the summer of 1955 the NYWQ played a concert in Blue Hill, Maine. It was a Sunday afternoon, and a very quiet, sunny, and summery day. Unbeknownst to us, Samuel Barber came to this concert. A few days afterwards, he called John Barrows in NY. (I should mention here that our personnel at that period was Jerome Roth, oboe, David Glazer, clarinet, Bernard Garfield, bassoon, John Barrows, horn, and your humble self on flute).

Saturday, March 2, 2013 8:00p.m. Dr. Arturo Rando-Grillot Recital Hall Lee and Thomas Beam Music Center University of Nevada, Las Vegas Written in the winter of 1882-1883, Concerto No.1 for hom was completed when Strauss was just 19 years of age. However, Strauss was no stranger to the hom. His father, Franz, was one of Germany's most famous hom players, and was not only one of Wagner's favorite hom players, but was also principal hom in the Munich Court Orchestra. Richard wrote this piece while attending university in Munich, and it is a playful, romantic style concerto. This is quite the contrast from his later works, which are more influenced by the Wagnerian style. This piece directly follows the traditional European concerto style of three movements ending in a rondo. However, unlike others, the concerto starts with a chord from the orchestra followed directly by the first fanfare from the hom.
