Joosten Institute of Botany and Landscape Ecology, Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University, Greifswald, Germany _______________________________________________________________________________________ SUMMARY This article explores the hydrological constraints on the existence of forested peat domes (peat swamp forests) in the humid tropics, the self-regulation mechanisms that enable them to persist and the implications for restoration of damaged domes. The most important requirement for the preservation of peat is permanent saturation by water. The variable input of precipitation must be translated into a constant water supply to the peat mound. In intact tropical peat swamp domes, water is stored above the peat surface in depressions between hummocks that surround tree trunks and between spreading buttress roots. This above-ground water store is analogous to the water stored in the loose upper layer of peat and vegetation in Sphagnum bogs. The horizontal differentiation of the peat swamp forest floor into hummocks with limited hydraulic conductivity and depressions with high storage capacity resembles the hummock-hollow patterning of these Sphagnum bogs. Hummocks and other surface elements functionally resemble V-notch weirs that regulate water availability. Buttressed trees play a key role in providing the structural elements for hydrological self-regulation. An additional level of regulation is found in the concentric zonation of forest types with increased presence of buttressed trees on steeper margins. Conservation and restoration efforts should take into account the inter- relationships between trees, water and peat and the hydrological feedbacks that operate as a consequence.

Introduction Wetlands and peatlands are integral parts of many of the world’s biomes, forming important transition zones between upland and aquatic systems. These habitats have a high degree of complexity of hydrology, edaphic conditions, and vegetation composition, contributing to the biodiversity of landscapes and species richness. They act to influence and modify the movement of runoff and groundwater from uplands into streams and lakes, by laying down organic remains (peats), and absorbing and releasing elements, compounds, gases, and particulate and dissolved organic matter. They therefore act as hydrological water retainers and biological filters in the landscape. Many kinds of wetlands and peatlands can be found, each with a particular hydrology and surface form, moisture and chemical regime, and range of vegetation types and associated biota. Owing to their hydrological characteristics, predominantly peat soils and hydrophytic plants, wetlands and peatlands are key habitats to indicate climate change, particularly changes towards drying (e.g., decreased precipitation, increased runoff from melting glaciers and snow pack). Changes in moisture regime will effect changes in the processes of peat accumulation and decomposition, release of nutrients and dissolved organic matter, and vegetation and species. Drainage for agriculture and forestry, peat harvesting, and development have already caused considerable areas of peatlands to decrease in depth and area. Owing to drying, some peatlands adjacent to uplands have decreased in depth to less than 30 cm, the defined depth for peatlands in Sweden, and thus the total area of peatland has decreased.

A pdf version of this document can be downloaded from www.skb.se Summary In this report, different Swedish wetland types are presented with emphasis on their occurrence, vegetation cover, soil physical and chemical properties and functions. Three different main groups of wetlands are identified: bogs, fens and marshes. The former two are peat forming environments while the term ‘marshes’ covers all non-peat forming wetlands. Poor fens are the most common type in Sweden but (tree-covered) marshes would probably be dominating large areas in Southern Sweden if not affected by human activity such as drainage for farming. Fens and bogs are often coexisting next to each other and bogs are often seen to be the next step after fens in the natural succession. However, the development of wetlands and processes of succession between different wetland types are resulting from complicated interactions between climate, vegetation, geology and topography. For description of the development at individual sites, the hydrological settings which determine the water flow paths seem to be most crucial, emphasizing the importance of geology and topography.

We combined peatland distribution data with land cover maps of the Copernicus Land Monitoring Service as well as with the World Database on Protected Areas to assess the extent of degraded peatlands and the proportion of peatlands located in protected areas in each European mire region. The international strategy for the years Action Plan 2016–2020 2016–2024 was approved at the 12th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (2015). Finland’s National Ramsar Wetlands Action Plan is part of the Eds. Juvonen Sanna-Kaisa, Kurikka Tuula Finnish contribution to its implementation. The action plan includes a review of the current state of wetlands and presents an analysis of the strenghs, weaknesses, threats and opportunities in the protection and sustainable use of wetlands. Based on these a total of 55 measures aimed to improve the state of wetlands have been established.
