Paddling OFF da Island in New York Recently, the Senior Masters Women’s crew of Hale’iwa-based outrigger canoe club Manu O Ke Kai competed in the Liberty Challenge, a 15 mile race in New York City. The Na Wahine O Manu O Ke Kai took first place in the Senior Masters Division. For inspiration the members packed a recent copy of the NSN to remind them of the good times back on ’s beautiful . After the race the women of Manu O Ke Kai toured New York City, seeing Central Park, Grand Central Station, Greenwich Village, and a Broadway show. Pounders Roundup is an annual bodyboard meet held at Laie Beach Park, aka Pounders, designed to promote the ocean as a healthy, positive outlet for the youth and adult members of the Ko‘olauloa communities. After experiencing Friday’s decrease in wind and swell, plus the fact it was raining all day, it was a mir- acle to see that the surf kicked up for the meet on Saturday. Not to mention, the sun was out all day and there wasn’t even one drop of rain to account for. Finally, sum- mer acting like summer. The event got under way a lit- tle past 9 a.m. and stretched right until the last glimmer of sunlight. The turn out was far more than anyone could have anticipated.
