The women had qualifying events at Haleiwa and Sunset Beach along side the men’s events up until about 10 years ago when all of a sudden the women’s events got canceled but the men’s events remained. For the last decade the women have been completely excluded from the professional surfing competitions on the North Shore Qahu. There are many competitions here in Oahu to help our male athletes AIVnLLe n for the Testimony qualify pro tour, But no qualifying events for our female athletes. This is forcing aspiring female athletes that want to make a career in professional surfing to have to fly to foreign lands at a great expense to them and their families to qualify for the WSL world tour. I was a part of a committee That helped achieve pay parity for femaLe professional surfers. Even though the prize money is now equal in WSL events women are not being given equal opportunities to compete. It’s almost like getting a raise and then being laid off. applaud I Kym Pine for introducing bill 10 and I hope that you will pass this bill so we can achieve equality for our athletes here in Hawaii. Thank you, KK 1 From: CLK Council Info Sent: Wednesday December 9, 2020 9:07 AM Subject: Council/Public Hearing Speaker Registration/Testimony Written Testimony Name Carol Anne Philips Phone 8087796222 Email [email protected] Meeting Date 12-09-2020 Council/PH Council Committee Agenda Item Bill 10 Your position on Support the mailer Representing Self Organization Dear Council, Please vote to pass Bill 10. Gender equality is the law and should be applicable to access of public resources such as the limited number of surf contest days/time allowed on the North Shore. The Olympic Committee has scheduled, for the first time, surfing to be included as a sanctioned sport. with equal divisions and competitors for both males and females. The stakes have dramatically changed. Gold medals are on the line for both Hawaii and the United States. Tsurigasaki Beach in Chiba, Japan from July 24 to August 9, 2020, is when and where it will all Written Testimony go down. Moving forward we can t afford to not give our wahine an equal opportunity to represent all of us and achieve on this very prestigious world stage the Olympics represents. The North Shore is the undisputed Capitol of professional surfing as such provides invaluable training resources for wold class surfers both from Hawaii and around the world. As such the contest calendar should reflect the laws and values of Hawaii and provide an equal amount of time for women. With all of that said in no way should the number of contest days on the North Shore be expanded?. The North Shore community has very graciously hosted surfing 1 competitions since the inception of professional surfing - the only caveat being the long-respected cap on surfing days. Equal access for Women in sports and in surfing is the law! Personally I have been denied a surfing permit that equals the Men’s big wave time frame several times. An example of this is the City permitted me an event at Waimea Bay for a big wave Women’s event in March and April for about a week. To me that was a slap in the face of every Women surfer. There are absolutely no big waves at those times. Currently my time frame is no better, It’s in October-November where chances are very low. It has been three years and the event has been a no go and I have lost my sponsor because of it. I have been supporting and organizing Women’s events where I can for about 18 years and the sport of surfing has grown for Women. Bill 10 brings light to the fact that Women surfers have been left out by many of the contest organizers and the City in providing equal event opportunities and the chance for them Written to be professionals. Currently there are few events for our Women’s Qualifying surfers who are Testimony trying to qualify for the pro ranks, World Champion Tour and things are not equal. There are only 18 top rated Women that compete and 42 top rated men that surf in the top tier contests. There are other and many flaws in the permit rule system and man)’ promoters that could do better for women surfers. We have to required better and more opportunities and Bill 10 will support equal access. The City dictates who can use our parks for events and they have to be more responsible for equality starting with having an advisory board that includes Women! I do appreciate what has been accomplished lately by our City staff and our Council and Legislators in moving forward to correct the many problems in this permitting process. Thank You to the entire City staff that has worked on changing things but we have to move forward and quickly and get the rules updated and changed so they represent our entire comniunity. Although the act of riding a wave started as a religious/cultural tradition, surfing rapidly transformed into a global water sport. The popularity of surfing is the result of events, innovations, influential people (http://www.surfertoday.com/surfing/9754themostinfluentialpeopleto thebirthofsurfing), and technological developments. Early surfers had to challenge the power of the oceans with heavy, finless surfboards. Today, surfing has evolved into a hightech extreme sport, in which hydrodynamics and materials play vital roles. Surfboard craftsmen have improved their techniques; wave riders have bettered their skills. The present and future of surfing can only be understood if we look back at its glorious past. From the rudimentary "caballitos de totora" to computerized shaping machines, there's an incredible trunk full of memories, culture, achievements and inventions to be rifled through. Professional female surfers, in particular, are drawing greater media attention than ever before and are seen by surf companies as the perfect vehicle to develop this global industry further. Because lifestyle branding has been developed as a modern marketing strategy, this thesis examines the lifestyle marketing practices of the three major surfing companies Billabong, Rip Curl and Quicksilver/Roxy through an investigation of the sponsorship experiences of fifteen sponsored female surfers. The research paradigm guiding this study is an interpretive approach that applies Doris Lessing’s (1991) concept of conformity and Michel Foucault’s (1979) notion of surveillance and the technologies of the self. An ethnographic approach was utilised to examine the main research purpose, namely to: determine the impact of lifestyle marketing by Billabong, Rip Curl and Quicksilver/Roxy on sponsored female surfers.
