STOCKS TO WATCH by Erik Ipsen SEC mulls cutting ratings on Moody’s and its fellow travelers to ‘irrelevant’ AFTER HAVING assigned top ratings to hundreds of billions of dollars of dodgy securities, Moody’s and the other credit ratings agencies have been punished by Wall Street. Last week, it was the Securities and Exchange Commission’s turn to take up the club. The regulator is proposing rules under which institutional investors could simply ignore those ratings. Moody’s earnings have fallen for three straight quarters. Two years ago, fashionistas sniffed at New York & Co.’s “dated” fashions, and shoppers and investors alike abandoned the retailer. But the shares have soared 47% since January. The company’s value-oriented offer of items selling for an average of $17 is a hard-times hit with consumers, and tight inventory controls that allow New York & Co. to avoid costly price cuts are popular with investors. First-quarter earnings were up 38%. Talk about false dawns. On June 9, commercial lender CIT landed a much-needed $3 billion cash injection from venerable Goldman Sachs. CIT’s shares dutifully rallied 11% over the next three days. Then gravity and the credit crisis reasserted themselves on the firm, which has lost more than $500 million and has $10 billion in debt to repay by the end of the year. The stock is down 66% so far in 2008. charts: grange paul

It represents hundreds of artists and corporations, from Elvis Presley to DreamWorks Pictures. UNUSUAL ENTRANCE Mr. Primont joined Cherry Lane in 1985 with a background in computer science and business administration. “It didn’t matter that I had no music experience,” he says. “I approached it like any other business and hired experts for the technical aspects.” SMART LUCK The executive has made major strides, adding six offices worldwide and establishing an educational nonprofit. “A lot came as luck,” he says. “We acquired the rights to Pokémon, and the company just exploded from there.” EXPERT HELP With the help of his 72 staffers Mr. Primont has mastered the industry.
