The article investigates the state of decay of the conservation of the for- mer Palace of the Pension Fund in the Iosefin Quarter, Timişoara. After a number of separate interventions on the building, it is for the first time that the building is studied and treated as a whole. The full design deals with both structural consolidation and architectural rehabilitation. The provided reversible consolidation solutions are respectful of the composi- tion and style of the elevations and aim at reviving the building’s former atmosphere. Geographical and Historical Review Based on the Correlation: Age – Genetic Type Raisa ŢĂRUȘ1, Vasile SURD 1 1 Babeş-Bolyai University, Faculty of Geography, Centre on Research of Settlements and Urbanism, Cluj-Napoca, ROMANIA E-mail: [email protected], [email protected] K e y w o r d s: Transylvania region, genetic type of town, urban settlement, historical period, documentary attestation A B S T R A C T The evolution of towns in Transylvania is studied along time relying on the hi storical documents of the region, the geographical space framing of the towns and the proofs of humanity influence over years. These geographical - historical characteristics of the Transylvanian region have generated through the historical periods the existence of a land with comprehensive meaning of the geographical space. In this context, the topic of our study discovers the birth of each town and his evolution over the years, its importance and functions in each historical period. In order to achieve a better knowledge about the geographical-historical evolution of towns in Transylvania we have identified and analyzed the differences between the ages of different towns referring to their first documentary attestation. Then, we deduced the three genetic types of towns in Transylvania region that can be divided into three categories: fortress and citadel, fair and primary resource town. The correlation between the ages of towns and their genetic type is performed, resulting in a novel approach for the geographical - historical research in the evolution of a town from the Transylvania region.

Copyright 2015 Pompilia Viorica Burcicǎ AMATEUR THEATER IN HISTORICAL TRANSYLVANIA BETWEEN THE TWO WORLD WARS BY POMPILIA VIORICA BURCICĂ DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2015 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Keith Hitchins, Chair Professor Maria Todorova Professor Emerita Elizabeth Pleck Associate Professor Carol Symes Abstract This dissertation examines amateur theater as an expression of cultural freedom among four ethnic groups inhabiting historical Transylvania, a province attached to Greater Romania after the First World War. By expanding on the current understanding of minority status in a nation- state, this study shows the opportunities provided by the Romanian government for local expression and unity. Through a detailed comparative history of the amateur theater of each ethnic group (the Romanians, Hungarians, Saxons, and Jews), I seek to show the degree to which nationalist regimes allowed them to create through amateur theater a platform for communication and cultural development. Unique at the regional level in scale and ethnic involvement, this artistic practice challenged the newly-formed nation-state and shaped its nationalistic response, but, at the same time, theater playing gave Romanian governments, in particular to the officials from Transylvania, an opportunity to act upon their principles concerning ethnic rights, which they advocated before the First World War. My conclusion is that, overall, they viewed the development of minority amateur theater in favorable terms. Theater appealed to minorities because they could take an active part in their self- organization and could showcase their outlook on life, family values, social relations, and work principles in the public sphere.

THE HISTORY OF THE ROMANIAN SYSTEM OF PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION. THE PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION OF THE ROYAL DICTATORSHIP AND THE NATIONALITY QUESTION Zsolt SZÉKELY Zsolt SZÉKELY Lecturer, College of Public Administration St. George, Public Administration Department, Faculty of Political, Administrative and Communication Sciences, Babeş-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca, Romania Abstract Tel.: 0040-267-315270 The goal of the present study is to explore a Email: [email protected] unique system of public administration that was carried out during the dictatorship of Charles II in Romania between the two World Wars. In a paradoxical manner, the only effort to solve the nationality question through legislation took place under his royal dictatorship. In 1938, the government published its three-part collection of laws, known as the Minority Statute, which defined the rights of minorities. The Minority Statute was intended primarily for foreign publication, and it was addressed more toward a foreign audience, which is also illustrated by the fact that it was only published in the official newspaper, and censors had prohibited it from being published in either the majority or the minority press. Among the circumstances surrounding the creation of the Minority Statute, it is interesting to note that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs played the largest role in its drafting process. Transylvanian Review of Administrative Sciences, 27E/2009 pp. 235-249 235 1.1. Introduction In 1937, a far-reaching process of change started taking place, as the fledgling Romanian democracy was replaced with the royal dictatorship. This new regime was introduced by King Charles II who, starting from the beginning of his rule (April 8, 1930) had made a concerted effort at introducing a system of authoritarian rule.

Storyline The Museum of the History of Romanian Jewry and the Holocaust Bucharest, Romania 1. Judaism and Christianity in Antiquity, Christianity’s Derivation from Judaism, the Old and New Testaments, the Exile of Jews in the Roman Empire 2. The beginnings of Jewish presence in the roman province of Dacia The oldest evidence of the presence of Jews on Romania's territory dates from the 1st to the 3rd centuries. Here are some epigraphic documents that refer to the presence of the Jews in Roman Dacia (the Roman province after Dacia was conquered by the Roman Empire, in 106): - Inscriptions of names of Jewish origin. - A stone ring having a Jewish inscription, discovered in Sarmisegetuza. - Objects inscribed with Jewish symbols. - The presence of eastern religions in Roman Dacia. - Dacia is known to have hosted military units brought from Palestine. Other testimonies: - The comparison made by Jewish historian Josephus Flavius (in his Jewish Antiquities) between the ascetic lifestyle of the Essenes in the Judean desert and that practiced by members of a religious sect in Dacia (the Pleistoi). - Apostle Andrew preached the Gospel in the land of the Scythes / Scythia (Eusebius of Caesarea, Historia Ecclesiastica). The general meaning of the name "Scythia" refers not only to the land in the northern and eastern parts of Pontus Euxinus (the Black Sea), but also to Scythia Minor, i.e. Dobrogea. Apostles focused on the Jews settled in different cities of the Roman Empire. - 133-134. A coin issued by Simon Bar Kochba, the leader of the independence movement of the Jews from the Roman Empire, during this period (132-135), was discovered in 1971 during the excavation works at the fort of Pojejena (near Orșova).

  • Promotion of Atheism As a Principle of the Communist Ideology - Case Study: Romania
Athens Journal of History - Volume 7, Issue 2, April 2021 – Pages 117-140 Promotion of Atheism as a Principle of the Communist Ideology - Case Study: Romania By Alin Goron The Communist ideology called for the denial of Christianity as a form of "mysticism" filled with "superstitions", but particularly as one of the factors that impeded social, economic and cultural progress. Scientific socialism, however, was meant to awaken class consciousness, setting Romanian society on a path towards true modernity. Thus a real battle ensued on the ideological front between two entities, the secular and ecclesiastical authorities, arising from the divide between traditional religious beliefs and atheist Marxism. The actions of the authorities against religious propaganda included both practical measures, which involved activities that filled the free time of the villagers, but also coercive measures consisting in political pressure or arrests. In spite of the communist regime's efforts to impose its own cultural agenda, the effects were long overdue, with rather modest results. Romania's forced development was faced with some inherent problems of the process of modernization and industrialization. The forced imposition of a foreign ideology to a conservative Eastern European area relying on obsolete mindsets, a society where 80% of the population lived in rural areas as of the end of the Second World War, required a longer period of time than the regime had originally planned. "Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people."1 Only the second part of this famous statement of Karl Marx is usually quoted.

Hungarian Historical Review 2, no. 3 (2013): 477–511 Stefano Bottoni National Projects, Regional Identities, Everyday Compromises Szeklerland in Greater Romania (1919–1940)1 This article analyzes the social and cultural impact of the dissolution of the Habsburg Monarchy on the overwhelmingly Hungarian-inhabited Szekler region. Although the half-million strong Szekler community found itself in the geographical center of Greater Romania, most people considered the Versailles peace settlement temporary. This created a paradoxical situation, for as the Szekler minority began to develop separately from the culture of post-Trianon Hungary, Hungarian intellectuals and former civil servants living within the borders of post-1918 Romania started to promote a cult of a supposedly “pure” and untouched Szeklerness. The first part of the article places the question of Szekler identity-building in a general theoretical framework and briefly sketches the political, social and demographic background of the community. The second part will analyze specific strategies of identity building that were pursued from outside the Szeklerland (e.g. the Szekler renaissance under the Horthy regime in Hungary) and from above (e.g. the constructions of “Szeklerness” by the intelligentsias in both Hungary and the Szeklerland). Finally, I will assess the influence of early Transylvanism on the building of Szekler identities in the interwar period. Keywords: Szekler, Greater Romania, local nationalism, ethnic identity, autonomy plans After the end of World War I the creation

FINAL REPORT of the International Commission on the Holocaust in Romania Presented to Romanian President Ion Iliescu November 11, 2004 Bucharest, Romania NOTE: The English text of this Report is currently in preparation for publication. © International Commission on the Holocaust in Romania. All rights reserved. THE HOLOCAUST IN NORTHERN TRANSYLVANIA Toward the Second Vienna Award The Nazis’ assumption of power in Germany in January 1933 marked a watershed in modern history. Within a relatively short time after the establishment of the totalitarian regime, the Nazis initiated a series of radical changes in the domestic and foreign policies of Germany. Domestically, they destroyed the democratic institutions of the Weimar Republic and adopted a series of socioeconomic measures calculated to establish a Third Reich that was to last a thousand years. Toward this end, they resolved to bring about the “purification” of Germany by expelling all Jews living in their country—a drive that eventually culminated in the physical destruction of European Jewry during the Second World War. An important foreign policy objective of the Nazi regime was to replace the world order established after World War I by the Allies, under the provisions of the Treaty of Versailles and the Covenant of the League of Nations, with a “New Order” reflecting the principles of National Socialism. In pursuit of this objective the Nazis violated Germany’s obligations under the various treaties ending the First World War. Among other things, they launched a massive rearmament program and re-militarized the Rhineland—aggressive moves that were indirectly encouraged by the failure of the Western democracies and the League of Nations to effectively oppose them, as they were more afraid of the long-range danger of Bolshevism than of the immediate threat posed by the Third Reich.
