  • Programme 3 the Norman Conquest of Pembrokeshire
PROGRAMME 3 THE NORMAN CONQUEST OF PEMBROKESHIRE Introduction. We’re walking through Pembrokeshire and Britain’s only coastal national park to discover how a group of French-speaking warriors turned this corner of Wales into a place still known as ‘Little England beyond Wales’. Home to miles of rugged coast line, beautiful beaches and incredible wildlife, it’s a landscape and culture heavily shaped by the Normans. Unlike the knockout victory of Hastings, this conquest was a long, fiercely fought struggle. Over time the Normans turned a Welsh speaking Kingdom into an English speaking shire dominated by castles, churches and the amazing cathedral in the city of St Davids. .Walking Through History Day 1 . From St Davids, we’ll make our way along the coastal cliffs, learning about the Norman’s first meetings with the native Welsh. We’ll start by walking in the footsteps of England’s greatest warrior king – William the Conqueror. St Davids to Newgale via Pembrokeshire Coastal Path Distance: 10 miles Day 2 . Heading inland, we’re walking the rough frontier the Norman’s fought to create with the rest of Wales. We’ll trace this boundary – or Landsker Line – that formed as Normans and Flemings flooded in, past early defences at Hayscastle and Wolfcastle. Climbing Great Treffgarne Mountain gives the perfect look out over the landscape facing the invaders. Finally we head south-west, to discover how the native Welsh fought back as I reach Wiston. Newgale to Wiston via Hayscastle, Wolfcastle and Great Treffgarne Mountain Distance: 20 miles Day 3 . The River Cleddau is our guide on Day 3, as we find out how a stunning welsh princess seduced Normans, Welsh and English alike.

Accounting for the Fund The Companies Act 1985 does not apply to all public bodies but the principles that underlie the Act’s accounting and disclosure requirements are of general application: their purpose is to give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the body concerned. The accounts are prepared in accordance with accounts directions issued by the Secretary of State for Transport. • Catalogue of Tsunamis in the Eastern Mediterranean from Antiquity to Present Times
Catalogue of Tsunamis in the Eastern Mediterranean from Antiquity to Present Times J. ANTONOPOULOS Received on June 14th, 1979 ABSTRACT This paper presents a systematic compilation of all data pertaining to tsunamis observed or recorded in the Eastern Mediterranean from antiquity to present times (1500 b.C. to 1980 a.D.). The first catalogue has been published by Prof. N.N. Ambraseys in the "Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America" (Vol. 52, No 4, October 1962) and this has formed the skeleton of this paper. All of the available information has been compiled from historical accounts, newspaper archives, other reports, and recent mareographic data. The earthquake data have been extracted from the Seismological Institute of Athens and relative biblio- graphy. Most of the events listed are associated with earthquakes, but some are the result of volcanic activity . Many of the tsunamis have been generated along the coast of Greece, Albania, South Yugoslavia, Turkey, Syria and Israel. There is little doubt that the large conjugate fault system along, the west coast of Greece, Crete and Rodos till the south coast of Turkey is often responsible for the earthquakes in this area and most of tsunamis in the Eastern Mediterranean.

  • TREC Section 4: Acton Town Station/Gunnersbury Park to Boston Manor Station (Optional Extension to Ealing Broadway)
TREC Section 4: Acton Town Station/Gunnersbury Park to Boston Manor Station (optional extension to Ealing Broadway). Distance: 8.4 km (5.4 miles). Public Transport: Section 4 starts at Acton Town Underground Station (District and Piccadilly lines), finishing at Boston Manor Underground Station (Piccadilly Line). There is an optional exit en route at Brentford Station or an optional 3.7 km (2.3 miles) extension from Boston Manor to Ealing Broadway Station (using part of the TREC Section 1 route). Surface and Terrain: The first half of the route is along level paths, including through parks: Gunnersbury and Carville Hall Park South; however the section along the Thames Path and the River Brent/Grand Union Canal Walk does involve some steps (an alternative route avoiding the steps is suggested); the route eventually reaches Boston Manor Park and Station. Refreshments: Acton Town Station; Gunnersbury Park Café; Brentford High Street (near Brentford Lock); Boston Manor Park Café (seasonal), Boston Manor Station and shops nearby. Covid-19 restrictions: Check availability of refreshments and toilets before your walk. Public Toilets: Acton Town Station (charge); Gunnersbury Park; Boston Manor Park Café (seasonal). The route starts from south-west Acton, one of the seven towns of the London Borough of Ealing, Acton means "oak farm" or "farm by oak trees". This final section of TREC does stray into the north east of the London Borough of Hounslow going through parts of old Brentford, however as this was historically part of the Parish of Ealing when it did extend to the River Thames we think it’s appropriate to include in TREC.
