Israel Multi-Generational Adventure Led by Rabbi David and Ellen Nesson June 30- July 10, 2013013 Itinerary Sunday, June 30: Departure from Newark Departure from Newark on El Al Israel Airlines on flight number 028 at 1:30 p.m. Monday July 1: Bruchim Ha’Baim – Welcome to Israel Arrival at Ben Gurion International Airport at 7:00 a.m. (assistance upon arrival by Keshet rep- resentatives). Drive through the Ayalon Valley to the Neot Kedumim Biblical Nature Reserve, for a biblical breakfast, goat herding, and tree planting. Continue into the city of and check in to Tel Aviv hotel. Introduction to Tel Aviv and Israel at the newly refurbished Independence Hall. Boxed lunch, hotel check-in, free time for the beach or other R&R, followed by a festive Welcome Dinner. Overnight: Carlton Hotel, Tel Aviv Tuesday, July 2: ISRAEL: 1948 AND 2013 From the Four Corners of the Earth, Opening program at the Jaffa Overlook. Continue to Ramat Aviv: First Timers – visit the the Palmach Musuem, dedicated to the elite pre-State fighting force for a glimpse at their lives, challenges and triumphs; Returnees – Guided visit through the Rabin Center and Musuem, which tells the story of Israel through the life and death of Israel’s assasinated Prime Minister, . Entire Group: Continue to Nachalat Binya- min pedestrian mall with its street artists and entertainers, with lunch on your own. Drive to Rehovot and the Ayalon Institute, a British Mandate period clandestine munitions factory, for a glimpse at some of the ingenuity used to establish the State of Israel. Late afternoon Mifgash program in Rishon Lezion in conjunction with the Jewish Federation of Greater Metro-West. Return to Tel Aviv for free time for rest, relaxation and walking along (or partying on) the beach. Dinner on your own followed by an optional cultural event, on your own. Overnight: Carlton Hotel, Tel Aviv Wednesday, July 3: A MOSAIC OF ISRAEL Depart for Northern Israel. Stop at Caesarea for a guided visit, exploring the relationship between and non Jews in Roman times, with the Stars of Caesarea audio-visual program. Continue to Atlit, site of a pre-state camp for illigal Jewish immigrants who tried to break the British embargo on Palestine on Jewish crewed boats, including a dialogue with Murray S. Greenfield, one of the American sailors on the Jewish boats. Lunch on your own en route with beach time Drive to Tzfat to explore the alleyways and synagogues of the mystics and trace the development of Kabbalah in the 16th century. Meet with Avram Lowenthal, a Kabbalistic Artist, originally from Detroit, in his studio and see how he synthesizes Jewish mysticism and art. Check-in at hotel, dinner, and after dinner, meet with a member of the kibbutz and learn about the in the past and today. Overnight: Kibbutz Hagoshrim, Upper Galilee

Thursday, July 4: A VIEW FROM THE HEIGHTS Ascend the to modern and a guided visit through the reconstructed Talmudic Village of Katzrin. Conclude the day with a choice of Rafting down the or a gentle jeep ride along the trails of the Golan, with a BBQ dinner in the field. Overnight: Kibbutz Hagoshrim, Upper Galilee Friday, July 5: DREAMS AND REALITIES Visit the re-flooded Hula Lake for an opportunity to ride tandem, triple passenger or quad bicycles (or golf carts) around the lake and see the synthesis of the Zionist dream and environmental renewal firsthand. Time permitting on the way up to , stop at the Kinneret Cemetery for a glimpse into the lives and dreams of the early Zionist pioneers, including visits to the graves of the traditional Zionist poet Rachel Bluaustien and contemporary poet and Naomi Shemer. Lunch on your own en route driving through the starkly beautiful Jordan River Valley. Stop at Mount Scopus for a welcome to Jerusalem and an opportunity to recite the traditional Shehechianu blessing upon entering Jerusalem. Join Jerusalemites in the frenzy of their last minute Shabbat preparations at the Machane Yehuda outdoor market, with lunch on your own. Check in to Jerusalem Hotel. Free time to prepare for Shabbat. Drive to Dung Gate for Kabbalat Shabbat at the Kotel (Western Wall) and walk back to the hotel. Festive Shabbat Dinner at the hotel. Overnight: Mount Zion Hotel, Jerusalem Shabbat, July 6: SHABBAT IN JERUSALEM Optional Shabbat services. Tour and Shabbat Lunch at the Fuchsberg Center for Conservative Judaism. Walking tour to Mishkenot Shaananim, using the poetry of Yehudah Amichai and the Book of Psalms as a guide. Free afternoon in Jerusalem with an opportunity to visit the newly opened Israel Museum (with prepaid tickets). Havdallah overlooking the Old City and a free evening. Overnight: Mount Zion Hotel, Jerusalem Sunday July 7: MASADA AND JEWISH CONTINUITY Depart Jerusalem for the Dead Sea Basin and ascend the cable car to Masada. Guided visit and exploration of some of the questions the Masada story raises vis a vis Jewish life today, with Historo Drama presentation by youth. Opportunity to float in the Dead Sea followed by lunch. Optional nature walk to the waterfall in David in the Nature Reserve. Return to Jerusalem, followed by dinner on your own and a free evening. Overnight: Mount Zion Hotel, Jerusalem Monday July 8: THE STORY OF JERUSALEM Special Bnei Mitzvah and Simcha ceremony/service on the Haas promenade overlooking the Old City of Jerusalem. We begin our tour of Jerusalem by descending to the City of David (the original Jerusalem of King David and First Temple times) for a guided visit with Bible in hand concluding the day splashing through Hezekiah’s Water Tunnel built 2,700 years ago to secure Jerusalem’s water supply from invading armies. Enter the Old City through the Zion Gate and continue to the Jewish Quarter for lunch on your own and free time for shopping. Continue with a guided visit through the Jewish Quarter including the Cardo, the Hurva Square and the Herodian Mansions. Conclude the day with a visit to the Kotel and a guided visit through the Kotel Tunnel. Dinner on your own in Jerusalem with an evening visit to the Night Spectacular sound and light show at the Tower of David Museum. Overnight: Mount Zion Hotel, Jerusalem Tuesday July 9: MEMORIES FOR THE FUTURE Yad Lekashish, Lifeline for the Elderly and work with the workshop participants in their daily creative tasks. Lunch on your own followed by a visit to a Jerusalem supermarket to purchase goods for distribution to families in need. Visit and stand in solemn memory at Israel’s Yad Vashem memorial to the Holocaust including the children’s memorial and the new historical museum, with parallel children’s programming (Children under the age of ten will visit the Biblical Zoo). Lunch on your own en route. Continue to Beit Guvrin and take part in an active Archaeological Dig. Return to Jerusalem, followed by free time for last minute shopping and packing. Wrap Up conversation followed by Festive Farewell Dinner and departure for Ben Gurion Airport.
