Network Notebook Fall Quarter 2018 (October - December) 1 A World of Services for Our Affiliates We make great radio as affordable as possible: • Our production costs are primarily covered by our arts partners and outside funding, not from our affiliates, marketing or sales. • Affiliation fees only apply when a station takes three or more programs. The actual affiliation fee is based on a station’s market share. Affiliates are not charged fees for the selection of WFMT Radio Network programs on the Public Radio Exchange (PRX). • The cost of our Beethoven and Jazz Network overnight services is based on a sliding scale, depending on the number of hours you use (the more hours you use, the lower the hourly rate). We also offer reduced Beethoven and Jazz Network rates for HD broadcast. Through PRX, you can schedule any hour of the Beethoven or Jazz Network throughout the day and the files are delivered a week in advance for maximum flexibility. Performance perspectives IONELA BUTU, Associate Professor PhD “George Enescu” National University of Arts ROMANIA∗ Bergʼs worldwide reputation had been consolidated with orchestral and chamber works and the opera Wozzeck. (...) For different reasons, his dimension as a composer of songs does not seem to be very large, and yet it is fundamental to his personality nevertheless. Mark DeVoto Abstract: The study presents several interpretative suggestions made from the perspective of the accompanying pianist that played Alban Bergʼs Sieben frühe Lieder. Why this topic? Because in the Romanian music literature, there is nothing written about the song cycle Sieben frühe Lieder by Alban Berg, which is a representative work in the history of the art song. The theme, addressed in the literature written abroad, is treated mostly from a musicological standpoint. That is why we considered it useful to make some observations of an interpretative nature. They will become relevant if read in parallel with the PhD thesis entitled Alban Bergʼs “Sieben frühe Lieder”: An Analysis of Musical Structures and Selected Performances, written by Lisa A. Lynch (the only documentary source that proposes in-depth syntactic analyses of the work, associated with valuable interpretative suggestions made from a vocal perspective). We also considered useful, during the study, the comparison between the two variants of the work: the chamber/voice-piano version and the orchestral version. The analysis of the symphonic text was carried out intending the observation of significant details useful for realizing an expressive duo performance. Of course, our interpretative suggestions are a variant between many others. -

Il puritanesimo scandalizzato della Salerno bene Niente clamori e proteste per Fa’afafine in un massimo cittadino blindato Di OLGA CHIEFFI In un teatro Verdi blindato, con carabinieri a sorvegliarne l’entrata è andato in scena lo spettacolo Fa’ afafine “Mi chiamo Alex e sono un dinosauro” inserito nella stagione dedicata ai giovanissimi studenti delle scuole primarie, che tanto clamore ha suscitato in città. I pensieri belli sono come gli uccelli migratori… Si muovono tutti insieme, così non si perdono”. Questa è solo una delle immagini poetiche ed emozionanti evocate da Alex, il protagonista dello spettacolo “Fa’afafine – Mi chiamo Alex e sono un dinosauro. La pièce che non mancano di sorprendere e commuovere, sono incentrati sul dibattutissimo e spesso frainteso tema del “gender”. Alex, interpretato dal bravo attore Michele Degirolamo, è un bambino curioso, brillante e pieno di inventiva che condivide il suo mondo fantastico coi pupazzi suoi amici, ma non ha ancora deciso se e quando essere maschio o femmina. Il bambino molto speciale infatti sogna di trasferirsi a Samoa per poter vivere da Fa’afafine. La parola composta (fa’a-= alla maniera di; “fafine” =donna) definisce un vero e proprio terzo sesso, coloro che, sin da bambini, non amano identificarsi e a cui la società samoana non impone una scelta. I fa’afafine godono di massimo rispetto. Sono maschi alla nascita, ed esplicitamente incarnano entrambi i caratteri, variando nel comportamento dal femminile stravagante al prosaicamente maschile. La scelta dell’abbigliamento è uno dei momenti più difficili per Alex: maschera del supereroe o scarpe da donna? Vestito da principessa o felpa con cappuccio? La scena tutta (firmata da Caterina Guia) è la sua stanzetta, animata in modo vincente e fantasioso dal video mapping di Daniele Salaris – Videostille, in grado di trasformarsi, in un soffio, in acquario, astronave, cielo stellato, luogo dei sogni. -

SONYA YONCHEVA Press Review – EN Bad Schussenried, 02-2021 Met Stars Live in Concert “Bad Schussenried. It is a ballroom of knowledge: the magnificently decorated and stuccoed library hall of the Premonstratensian monastery in Bad Schussenried. Very catholic, very rococo, wonderful bookcases and a ceiling fresco of the colorfully transfigured divine wisdom. Which is why here a few years ago the great writer Martin Walser presented his novel “Muttersohn” in an original reading for television. The “Swabian Spring” festival used to play here, and the concert by the legendary Guarneri Quartet from New York has never been forgotten. But now you can experience great opera there - which is no empty phrase and has a lot to do with New York. The Metropolitan Opera, which is closed during the pandemic, has launched the online series "Met Stars Live in Concert": concerts from special locations, broadcast worldwide as live stream, and in HD quality. At the beginning of February, for example, Anna Netrebko sang at the Vienna Riding School. And on Saturday, soprano Sonya Yoncheva appeared in the superbly illuminated library of the Schussenried monastery. The performance of the Bulgarian soprano can be watched for two weeks for 20 Dollars on the metopera.org website. The great aria “Ritorna vincitor!” From Aida, Rusalka's “Song to the Moon”, “Habanera” from Carmen - it's a one and a half hour best-of program. It is of course not very grand opera, because it is only accompanied by a piano (pianist: Julien Quentin). The Met itself makes the painful absence of the orchestra aware: During the stream, two scenes with Yoncheva from original productions are being faded in, Desdemona's Ave Maria and the duet Tosca / Scarpia. -
