    METROPOLITAN OPERA, OCTOBER 2018 On two successive days, I saw two of the grandest spectacles of grand opera: Camille Saint-Saens SAMSON ET DELILAH Giuseppe Verdi AIDA SAMSON & DALILAH This was a new production starring superstars French tenor Roberto Alagna and Latvian mezzo Elina Garanča. She was in excellent voice – wonderfully resonant chest tones, where most of this role is written. Throughout, her performance was at the pinnacle of the mezzo’s art. The tenor started out rather weakly – nothing technically wrong with his singing, just didn’t seem to have much passion in his attempts to rouse the Hebrews to revolt in Act I. He warmed up in Act II, and did a credible job in the seduction scene, where Garanča really excelled. And then in Act III – an announcement was made that he could not continue the performance, and a substitute was announced: Gary(?) Bennett. Perhaps he was known to most of the audience, because that was greeted with warm applause. No reason was given – perhaps Alagna was injured at the end of Act II, where Samson is captured by Philistine soldiers, thrown to the ground and pummeled. The substitute acquitted himself admirably in the initial scene of Act III, where he appears solo chained to a millstone, but he faded in the later crowd scenes with full ensemble and orchestra at full blare. And the ensemble – in Act I, the choral singing was phenomenal. That chorus is a national treasure! The role of the Old Hebrew was sung by Ukrainian bass Dmitry Belosselsky, with an anazingly rich, full-bodied voice.

    Embargoed until 6:30 p.m. EST January 14, 2015 WORLD PREMIERE OF 21ST-CENTURY CANADIAN OPERA ONE OF MANY FIRSTS IN COC’S 2015/2016 SEASON Toronto – The world premiere of a new Canadian work was one of the many operatic highlights revealed today at the public launch of the Canadian Opera Company’s 2015/2016 season at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. The COC’s 65th season is once again comprised entirely of company productions, four of which are new to Toronto audiences, and features the COC’s first mainstage world premiere since 1999, COC premieres of opera rarities and the revival of classic masterpieces. The COC presents Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata in a new company production; the world premiere of Barbara Monk Feldman’s Pyramus and Thisbe presented with the COC premieres of Claudio Monteverdi’s Lamento d’Arianna and Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda; the continuation of the COC’s Ring operas with the revival of its acclaimed production of Richard Wagner’s Siegfried; a new COC production of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro; the COC premiere of Gioachino Rossini’s Maometto II; and a revival of the COC production of Georges Bizet’s popular opera Carmen. “With the 15/16 season we can explore with our patrons the vitality of opera through the centuries.     Mark Morash is a conductor and pianist originally from Halifax, Canada. Currently he serves as the Director of Musical Studies for San Francisco Opera Center. There, he has conducted for the Merola Opera Program, the Adler Fellow Showcase, and Western Opera Theater. He has also led performances of A Streetcar Named Desire, La Serva Padrona and Trouble in Tahiti for Opera Santa Barbara, Rigoletto for Opera Colorado, and Don Giovanni and The Turn of the Screw for the Lincoln Theater in Yountville, California. San Francisco Opera Center performances have included Gianni Schicchi, Argento’s Postcard from Morocco, The Barber of Seville, The Rape of Lucretia, Albert Herring, Così fan tutte, Die Fledermaus, The Merry Wives of Windsor, and Pasatieri’s The Seagull. Recent performances include conducting debuts with Canada’s Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, as well as with Hawaii Opera Theater leading Previn’s A Streetcar Named Desire. Upcoming, Morash leads Rossini’s La Cenerentola. As a collaborative pianist, Morash’s performances have taken him throughout the United States of America, Canada, as well as to Japan and Russia. Artists with whom Morash has appeared include Leah Crocetto, Melody Moore, Elza van den Heever, Quinn Kelsey, and Michael Schade. He has accompanied numerous emerging singers in San Francisco Opera’s esteemed Schwabacher Debut Recitals. He performed in the west coast premiere of Ned Rorem’s song cycle Evidence of Things Not Seen for Other Minds Music Festival.
