Submarine, air and surface actions have continued to aggravate the already critical enemy shipping situation. His lines of communication to his MARSHALL, CAROLINE and MARIANAS bases have been cut and those to the southern PHILIPPINES, NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES and MALAYA are being rendered hazardous. Targets in the Empire are being subjected to VLR air attack, but air bases are required from which fighter cover for such attacks be given. r A4-3(2e) Serial: 00040 Operation Plan ComFIFTHFleet No. 13-44 Enemy Forces (a) The enemy has numerous operational airfields in bombing range of IWO JIMA-CHICHI JIMA in the arc that extends from OKINAWA to the TOKYO area. MARCUS is also "within range, but has not recently been operational. Many of the Japanese ships which survived the action of 24-25 October are believed to have been damaged then. The date cf completion of their repairs is not known now, but it is estimated that these repairs will require two to three months.
