Last updated 5.8.16 The RAF Museum Avro Anson identity mix-up This Anson Mk.1 fuselage is displayed at the RAF Museum at Hendon mounted on a RAF Queen Mary transporter. It is painted in RAF wartime camouflage as W2068. The museum’s signage and listings quote this Anson as W2068 ex VH-ASM. However it is in fact a different Anson LT773 ex VH-AZU. Despite the error being brought to the museum’s attention for some years, it has not been corrected. This paper presents the histories of both Ansons. AVRO ANSON Mk.1 VH-ASM .41 Built by A.V.Roe & Company Ltd at Manchester. Two 350hp Armstrong Siddeley Cheetah IX engines. Built to British Air Ministry order for 1,000 Anson 1s for RAF, serial range W1505 to W2665 with black-out blocks. The main deliveries of this order were shipped direct to Australia and Canada under the Empire Air Training Scheme Allocated RAF serial W2068 Shipped in wooden packing crates to Australia 10.5.41 Taken on RAAF charge as W2068. 12.5.41 Received No.1 Aircraft Depot, Laverton ex UK awaiting erection 17.5.41 Serviceable in 14 days at 1D 27.5.41 Issued to No.4 Service Flying Traning School, Geraldton WA ex 1AD 12.6.41 Forced landing at 4SFTS, undercarriage and under surfaces of fuselage damaged 19.12.41 4SFTS report: W2068 is fitted with gun turret 4.6.42 Taxying accident at 4SFTS, port side of tailpane damaged 4.3.43 Forced landing at 4SFTS, on cross-country flight, damage not stated 18.10.43 Issued to Australian National Airways, Maylands ex 4SFTS for complete overhaul 5.6.44 Issued to 4SFTS Geraldton ex ANA 22.1.45 Transferred to 4SFTS Storage, Geraldton ex 4SFTS unit strength. -

Urban Geology in London No. 23 The Stones of London’s War Memorials ‘If I should die, think only this of me; That there’s some corner of a foreign field That is forever England’ The Soldier, Rupert Brooke (1887-1915) Memorial at the Tower of London for the centenary of the outbreak of WWI: 'Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red' by ceramicist Paul Cummins. The opening lines of Rupert Brooke’s famous poem (above) illustrates muCh of the sentiments assoCiated with the design of war memorials and war graves. It has beCome traditional, on the most part, for stones representing the soldiers’ Countries of origin to be used in memorials ConstruCted to Commemorate them. For example, the war memorials commemorating the British Forces killed during WWI in FranCe and Belgium, such as Thiepval and the Menin Gate, are built from briCk, with piers, vaults, Columns and the panels bearing the insCriptions of names in Portland Stone. As we will see below, stones have been imported from all over the World to Commemorate the soldiers from those Countries who fought in the European theatres of the first half of the 20th Century. Indeed there are Corners of foreign fields, or in faCt London, that are forever Australian, Canadian or Maltese. Many of the War Memorials and their stones Catalogued below have been previously desCribed in other Urban Geology in London Guides. Seeschlachten im Atlantik (Zusammenfassung) U-Boot-Krieg (aus Wikipedia) 07_48/U 995 vom Typ VII C/41, der meistgebauten U-Boot-Klasse im Zweiten Weltkrieg Als U-Boot-Krieg (auch "Unterseebootkrieg") werden Kampfhandlungen zur See bezeichnet, bei denen U-Boote eingesetzt werden, um feindliche Kriegs- und Frachtschiffe zu versenken. Die Bezeichnung "uneingeschränkter U-Boot-Krieg" wird verwendet, wenn Schiffe ohne vorherige Warnung angegriffen werden. Der Einsatz von U-Booten wandelte sich im Laufe der Zeit vom taktischen Blockadebrecher zum strategischen Blockademittel im Rahmen eines Handelskrieges. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg änderte sich die grundsätzliche Einsatzdoktrin durch die Entwicklung von Raketen tragenden Atom- U-Booten, die als Träger von Kernwaffen eine permanente Bedrohung über den maritimen Bereich hinaus darstellen. Im Gegensatz zum Ersten und Zweiten Weltkrieg fand hier keine völkerrechtliche Weiterentwicklung zum Einsatz von U-Booten statt. Der Begriff wird besonders auf den Ersten und Zweiten Weltkrieg bezogen. Hierbei sind auch völkerrechtliche Rahmenbedingungen von Bedeutung. Anfänge Während des Amerikanischen Bürgerkrieges wurden 1864 mehrere handgetriebene U-Boote gebaut. Am 17. Februar 1864 versenkte die C.S.S. H. L. Hunley durch eine Sprengladung das Kriegsschiff USS Housatonic der Nordstaaten. Es gab 5 Tote auf dem versenkten Schiff. Die Hunley gilt somit als erstes U-Boot der Welt, das ein anderes Schiff zerstört hat. Das U-Boot wurde allerdings bei dem Angriff auf die Housatonic durch die Detonation schwer beschädigt und sank, wobei auch seine achtköpfige Besatzung getötet wurde. Auftrag der Hunley war die Brechung der Blockade des Südstaatenhafens Charleston durch die Nordstaaten. Erster Weltkrieg Die technische Entwicklung der U-Boote bis zum Beginn des Ersten Weltkrieges beschreibt ein Boot, das durch Dampf-, Benzin-, Diesel- oder Petroleummaschinen über Wasser und durch batteriegetriebene Elektromotoren unter Wasser angetrieben wurde. -

However, I am sure among the worst are those where there has been no confirmed death or whereabouts of a missing veteran who are recorded as Missing in Action (MIA). And, so it was for Flying Officer Michael Herbert and Pilot Officer Robert Carver of No 2 Squadron whose Canberra aircraft A84-231 (call-sign Magpie 91) was lost in South Vietnam on the evening of November 3rd, 1970. The airmen, both 24 years, departed Phan Rang airbase on a routine bombing sortie near the Laotian/South Vietnam border. They were never heard from again. A subsequent Court of Inquiry into the disappearance found no obvious reason for the loss. -
