RECOMMENDATION Members are asked: (a) To note the contents of the report; (b) Agree to the Transportation Spokesperson writing to the Minister to express: (i) the urgent requirement to upgrade the A82 between Tarbet and Inverarnan, recognising the strategic importance of the route to communities in the Western Highlands and Islands; (ii) the Council’s concern at the failure to properly fund the maintenance of local roads, that the situation is not sustainable and that the Executive should match the resources and commitment provided by the DTLR in England. 3. INTRODUCTION In her introduction to the document, Wendy Alexander MSP recognises that within the available resources it will not be possible to address all of Scotland’s transport problems, but does commit to support rural and island areas through the maintenance of lifeline air and ferry services, while simultaneously addressing the challenge of urban congestion and improving access and integration of services. It is significant that of the top ten priorities, nine are targeted at improving public transport. The document also stresses the importance the Government attaches to the development of regional transport partnerships such as HITRANS and WESTRANS as being key to the delivery of transport services in the future.

Abellio took its decision after much of Carillion's rail assets were bought by rival Amey, which is involved in one of the rival bids, and left it unable to continue. In a statement, Economy Secretary Ken Skates said the Dutch-owned company "has taken the regrettable decision to withdraw its bid having been unable to overcome the impact of Carillion's liquidation". He added: "We have two strong bidders remaining in the process and remain on target to award this exciting contract in May 2018 and to transform rail services in Wales and borders from October 2018." Branch Meeting at Kemble, 26 September 2020 The Branch AGM will be held on Saturday 26th September 2020 at 2 pm in the Function Room, Tavern Inn, Kemble, Gloucestershire GL7 6AX. The venue is very close to the station, which is on the railway line between Swindon ad Stroud. Before the formal business of the meeting, guest speaker Peter Langman will talk about the Cirencester Community Rail Project, which aims to reopen the Kemble- Cirencester line as light rail and for which a feasibility study is now funded. He will be accompanied by fellow promoters Richard & Jane Gunner and Andrew Lennard, who will be happy to answer any questions. If coming by train, leave the station by the down side (Platform 2) entrance and the Tavern Inn is straight ahead. There is no direct route from the up side (Platform 1) entrance, so those arriving from the Stroud and Gloucester direction will need to cross the footbridge.
